I listen to radio broadcasts daily on my TECSUN PL-380 radio, a little larger than the palm of my hand.
Recently, in addition to listening to NHK news, I also listen to medium wave broadcasts from around Japan. I can often hear the local Keihanshin broadcasts, but sometimes I can also hear broadcasts from other areas. At night, stations in the Kanto, Koshinetsu, Hokuriku, Tokai, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions can also be heard.
According to our information, some of these stations are beginning to discontinue AM broadcasting in order to switch to FM, which they say costs a great deal of money to maintain, and advertising revenues are also decreasing.
Is information useless if it is delivered to people outside the service area of the broadcaster?
If you are listening to a distant station and a commercial comes on, some of the information may include events. When I hear that, I want to go on a trip. If you hear information about a local product or cuisine, you may want to go out of your way to buy or eat it.
In the first place, the fact that radio waves come in through the air is enjoyable in itself. Although there is noise and interference. The other day I had an interesting experience: I was listening to 1116 kHz, where Nankai Broadcasting from Ehime Prefecture and Niigata Broadcasting from Niigata Prefecture were broadcasting on the same frequency.
You might think that if they were on the same frequency, they would get mixed up and you would not be able to understand what they were saying. However, the other evening, I could hear the Niigata Broadcasting System so well that I could understand the traffic information. And the next morning, I could hear Nankai Broadcasting clearly.
Nowadays, it is common to listen to radiko, streaming, podcasts, etc., and it may be eccentric to listen with a radio receiver, but it is the radio receiver that gives me the feeling of "traveling by radio" together with shortwave broadcasting, which is also becoming less and less common. I hope broadcasters understand this feeling.

私は私の手のひらより少し大きい程度のラジオ、TECSUN PL-380で毎日ラジオ放送を聴いている。
最近はNHKのニュースを聴くほかに、日本各地の中波放送を聴いている。地元京阪神の放送局はよく聴こえるが、それ以外の地域の放送も聴こえることがある。夜間になれば、関東甲信越、北陸、東海、中国、四国地方の放送局も入感する。
情報によると、これらのうちいくつかの局がAM停波を始めている。FMへの移行をするためである。AMは維持費が膨大にかかる上、広告収入も減っているからと言う。
放送局のサービスエリア外にいる人間に届けても、情報は役に立たないのだろうか。
遠くの放送局を聴いていて、CMが入るとその中にはイベントなどの情報もある。それを聴いたら旅行に行きたくなってしまう。またご当地の製品や料理の情報が流れたら、足を延ばして、買いに、食べに行きたくなってしまうかもしれない。
そもそもラジオは電波が空を飛んで入ってくるということ自体が楽しいのだ。ノイズや混信はあるものの。先日は面白い体験をした。1116kHzを聴いていたのだが、ここには愛媛県の南海放送と新潟県の新潟放送が同一周波数で出ているのだ。
同一周波数で出ていたら混じって何を言っているのかわからないと思うかもしれない。しかし先日の夕方は新潟放送がよく聴こえて交通情報が聞き取れるほどに聴こえた。そして翌朝は南海放送がはっきりと聞き取れた。
今はradikoやストリーミング、ポッドキャストなどで聴くのが一般的で、ラジオ受信機で聴くのは偏屈なのかもしれないが、同じく少なくなっている短波放送と合わせて「ラジオで旅をしている」感覚になれるのはラジオ受信機なのだ。この気持ちを放送局の人はわかってほしい。
