This anime gained some attention for the wrong reasons. It's one of those shows where it's animated so bad that it's good for a comedic genre. I don't think the animators intentionally inserted the clip below to show botched work. They have demonstrated that they are quite capable of animating.
Plot:
Yukito was a son of a cult leader tossed into the sea for a cult ritual for their cult's god. As his life flashed before his eyes while drowning he wished for a do over in a world where there were no gods or religion. Mitama, their cult's deity heard his wish and transported him to another world devoid of the concept of religion. As he navigates through the new world, he unravels the secrets behind its history and the secrets kept hidden within the capital city. Through some plot twists and turns I don't want to share for spoiler reasons, Yukito decides to bring back the concept of religion and make Mitama the one true god of the new world.
This is one of the legendary clips that went viral showing a live video with anime filters then inserting one of the character's heads. The other one is just bad CGI.
The early episodes foreshadowed how ominous the capital is but this mini arc is only a stepping stone for the main plot of building up Mitama as the one true god.
Watching this show is like watching a sitcom where you can either take the main quest seriously or brush it off aside and still be fine. It's a given that the show has no clear intent on taking itself seriously due to taking the comedic route but beneath the gags are some real character developments.
I don't think they did a good job fleshing out lovable and relatable characters because most of the attempts get washed over by slapstick skits and lewd jokes that become stale. But there are serious moments that make you sympathize with the characters motivations like how the main protagonists Yukito distrusts gods due to his upbringing.
I initially thought about mentioning the system the new world runs in but those are complex and I just end up spoiling away the contents of the show just to make sense. TL:DR since there are no gods and their existence is only based from the forgotten history, the new world antagonists decides to bring back religion turning things into a battle royale to see which god is bigger.
Yukito as a protagonist is difficult to sympathized with as a viewer because of the distrust and manipulative tactics he employs when dealing with the gullible Mitama. But this dislike is brought by his terrible upbringing in the cult as the cult's activities ruined his social life and interrupted any meaningful relationships he could have had growing up. I don't think most viewers can relate to a lifestyle raised by cults so that's one glaring area where it was difficult to connect with Yukito.
But at least understanding feelings of betrayal, contempt and distrust for others is a universal feeling no one is foreign about. Yukito as a character grew based on the amount of trust he's willing to give and sacrifices he's willing to make for others. We can see Mitama's attempts to win him over and think how cruel Yukito can be brushing off efforts but this privilege of perspective is only available as an omnipotent viewer.
To put it into better perspective, we judge characters in a story based on our omnipotent viewpoint on what goes on but the characters are only limited to what they see and judge things based on what they perceive therefore they react with only what available information they have at the time.
Is this even a good show to recommend? I'm neutral about it. I admit to watching it due to wanting to know why the hate and so it wasn't so bad but it wasn't entirely good that I'd be looking forward to season 2. Under the comedy genre, it was hovering between dull to average. Overall, the show is just average and I considered the half-baked animation as part of its charm.
Thanks for your time.
