It's scheduled to be released on September 28 and animated by animation studio Drive. Junji Ito is a big name in the horror manga genre. His art style and manner of story telling includes a mastery of light and lovecraftian horror.
He's the modern genius mangaka under the horror genre and that's just my opinion. I often see a lot of mangaka horror artists emulate his style to some degree and this speaks volumes on how his works influenced visual horror storytelling in manga.

It's a story about the mysterious events in town involving spirals. There's something about spirals that draw people in.
I don't really have my hopes up even after looking at the trailer. It's uncanny and eerie but being an avid horror manga fan, some of the visuals no longer give me the goosebumps as it used to. I wish I could read his works like the first time again. Anyway, most fans of his works often express disappointment whenever there's an anime adaptation like the Tomie Series.
The marked difference is the medium used for storytelling. Junji Ito's visual storytelling relies on page turner jump scares, use of lighting and composition in the panels on top of the bizarre lovecraftian story per chapter. When you animate these parts, some of the charm of his works are lost in translation to the media used. There's no substitute for the thrill of turning the page only to be surprised by something horrible you can't understand but it's staring right back at you rendered in fine ink.
Animation with suspense music adds variation to tell the same story but differs in how the visual impact. If you compare the manga versus any still scene in the animation just form the trailer, you'll notice the ink work's charm are lost. Music may add some spice to the story but without it, a reader will fill that detail with their own imagination. In a manga, the reader fills the void in transitioning between the events in the panel and atmosphere. But in anime, the viewer is spoonfed this information making them more passive in their imagination. Stories that work well in manga can lose their visual appeal when animated.
Thanks for your time.
