Greetings, Hive! Last week I talked about which was my favorite anime protagonist and why. The question was pretty easy to answer and I knew it since I started doing this, but today turn to talk about something that took me much longer figuring out: my favorite supporting character in the anime. This question was very difficult to answer because, unlike main characters, who all of them are more or less similar to each other, supporting characters are much more varied and a single anime can have several to choose from. I thought about Vegeta from Dragon Ball, Hajime Saito from Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X), Killua from HunterxHunter, at some point I was about to choose Levi Ackerman or Erwin Smith from Shingeki No Kyojin, all this process until I finally remembered Envy, from Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I was thinking a lot about whether Envy could be considered as a secondary character since he is presented as an antagonist, however he isn’t the plot’s main villain, obviously he isn’t the main character, so by default I consider him as a supporting character. But why is a character as despicable as Envy one of my favorite characters? I'll explain below why I like this fascinating character so much.

So without any further ado, let's start!

Envy is a homunculus born from Father's envy towards humans and their ability to relate to each other and overcome adversity through this support.

Throughout the anime Envy is shown as someone extremely cruel, manipulative, lying, cynical, unscrupulous, and stop counting negative adjectives, you can see how he enjoys killing and making humans miserable, he constantly makes jokes and jokes about how he was the one who caused the civil war in Ishval. Something I really like about Envy is that he appears practically at the beginning of the anime and remains an important figure for the plot until the final episodes.

Envy's most distinctive power is his ability to alter his physical appearance at will, he can imitate the voice and appearance of anyone he wants, thanks to this he commits really cruel acts like murdering Maes Hughes with the appearance of his wife. His true forms are: one in which he is a kind of giant snake-dragon with several pairs of legs, a dog's head, and long hair, and his true form is similar to the previous one, both share the same body shape only that in this one is much smaller, at the height of an insect, has only one pair of eyes and a half-open mouth.

In writing terms, I think Envy is an incredible character, since, throughout the series we are given a lot of emphasis on how much he hates human beings, but that hatred and envy are born from what he can't be or have. Unlike greed, which is wanting everything for yourself, envy is wanting anyone to have what you can't and this is represented very well by this character.

During his first few appearances we are shown as someone more or less simplistic, just another villain to kick his ass to continue the story, but as the plot advances Envy becomes more and more interesting. His highest point and I think my favorite moment of the entire series is Envy's death scene. After arousing Roy Mustang's ire by confessing that he was the one who killed Maes Hughes, Roy chases him until he finds Envy and consumed by a thirst for revenge begins to burn him relentlessly, draining Envy's energies and reducing him to his true form. Before Roy completes his revenge, Riza Hawkeye, Edward Elric and Scar appear to stop him, and to try to get away with it, Envy does what he does best: manipulate.

He tries to manipulate everyone in the place, but when he realizes that no one bats an eyelid at his words, he gets desperate and Edward, feeling sorry for him, tells Envy that the reason for his behavior is the envy he feels towards humans. Envy is alone, he has no friends, he has no one to love or care about him, everything he caused in the world he did to destroy what he could never have, his ability to change forms can be seen as a reflection of his loneliness, and in the end that is how he dies, as a miserable worm being understood by what he hates the most: humans, a humiliating end for him.

I know it's funny to pick an antagonist and especially one who has done such despicable things as one of my favorites, but I think all the homunculi in Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood are so much more than just some turn-based villains, they all represent very well their sin and the weight they carry in their existence because of it. Envy strikes me as an incredibly well written character and one of the most tragic characters in the entire anime. How about you? Do you agree that Envy is a good character? ¡Saludos, Hive! La semana pasada hablé de cuál era mi protagonista favorito en el anime y porque. La pregunta fue bastante fácil de responder y lo supe desde que comencé a hacer esto pero, el día de hoy me toca hablar de algo que me costó mucho más: mi personaje secundario favorito en el anime. Esta pregunta se me hizo muy difícil de responder ya que, a diferencia de los protagonistas los cuáles son todos más o menos parecidos entre sí, los personajes secundarios son muchísimo más variados y un solo anime puede tener a varios entre los que escoger. Pensé en Vegeta de Dragon Ball, en Hajime Saito de Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X), Killua de HunterxHunter, en algún momento estuve a punto de elegir a Levi Ackerman o a Erwin Smith de Shingeki No Kyojin, todo este proceso hasta que finalmente recordé a Envy, de Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. Estuve pensando mucho en si se podía considerar a Envy como un personaje secundario ya que este se nos presenta como un antagonista, sin embargo no es el villano principal de la trama, obviamente no es el protagonista, así que por default lo considero como un personaje secundario. Pero, ¿por qué un personaje tan despreciable como Envy es uno de mis personajes favoritos? A continuación explicaré porque me gusta tanto este fascinante personaje.

Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!

Envy es un homúnculo nacido de la envidia que Father sentía hacía los seres humanos y su capacidad de relacionarse entre ellos y superar adversidades a través de este apoyo.

Durante todo el anime Envy es mostrado como alguien sumamente cruel, manipulador, mentiroso, cínico, sin escrúpulos, y pare usted de contar adjetivos negativos, se le ve como disfruta matar y hacer miserables a los seres humanos, constantemente hace chistes y burlas acerca de que él fue quién ocasionó la guerra civil de Ishval. Algo que me gusta mucho de Envy es que aparece prácticamente al comienzo del anime y se mantiene siendo una figura importante para la trama hasta los episodios finales.

El poder más distintivo de Envy es su capacidad de alterar su aspecto físico a voluntad, puede imitar la voz y apariencia de cualquier persona que desee, gracias a esto comete actos realmente crueles como el de asesinar a Maes Hughes con la apariencia de su esposa. Sus verdaderas formas son: una en la que es una especie de serpiente-dragón gigante con varios pares de piernas, cabeza de perro, y cabello largo, y su forma verdadera es parecida a la anterior, ambas comparten la misma forma del cuerpo solo que en esta es mucho más pequeño, a la altura de un insecto, tiene solo un par de ojos y una boca semi abierta.

Envy me parece un personaje increíble a nivel de escritura, ya que durante todo momento en la serie se nos hace mucho énfasis de todo lo que el odia a los seres humanos, pero ese odio y envidia nacen de lo que él no puede ser ni tener. A diferencia de la codicia, que es querer todo para ti, la envidia es querer que nadie tenga lo que tú no puedes y esto lo representa muy bien este personaje.

Durante sus primeras apariciones se nos muestra como alguien más o menos simplón, solo un villano más al que patearle el trasero para continuar con la historia, pero a medida que esta se desarrolla Envy se va haciendo cada vez más y más interesante. Su punto más alto y creo que mi momento favorito de toda la serie es la escena de la muerte de Envy. Después de despertar la ira de Roy Mustang al confesar que fue el quién mató a Maes Hughes, Roy le persigue hasta que lo encuentra y consumido por la sed de venganza comienza a quemarlo sin parar, agotando las energías de Envy y reduciéndolo hasta su forma verdadera. Antes de que Roy complete su venganza aparecen Riza Hawkeye, Edward Elric y Scar para detenerlo, ante esto y para tratar de salirse con las suyas, Envy acude a lo que mejor sabe hacer: manipular

Trata de manipular a todos en el lugar, pero al darse cuenta que nadie se inmuta ante sus palabras se desespera y Edward, sintiendo lastima hacia él, le dice a Envy que la razón de su comportamiento es la envidia que siente hacia los humanos. Envy está solo, no tiene amigos, no tiene a nadie quién le quiera ni se preocupe por él, todo lo que causó en el mundo lo hizo para destruir lo que él nunca pudo tener, su habilidad de cambiar formas puede ser vista como un reflejo de su soledad, y al final es así como muere, como un gusano miserable siendo comprendido por lo que más odia: los humanos, un final humillante para él.

Sé que es curioso elegir a un antagonista y sobre todo a uno que ha hecho cosas tan despreciables como uno de mis favoritos, pero creo que todos los homúnculos de Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood son mucho más que unos simples villanos de turno, todos representan muy bien su pecado y el peso que cargan en su existencia a causa de este.
