If there's one anime I watched recently that pleasantly surprised me, it was I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level. The premise seems simple: a woman dies of exhaustion in our world, reincarnates as an immortal witch in a fantasy world, and spends 300 years defeating slimes the weakest monsters that exist.
But as a consequence, she reaches the maximum level without even realizing it.
The protagonist is Azusa Aizawa, and everything revolves around the peaceful life she has built for herself. What’s most interesting is that she wants nothing to do with adventures, danger, or fame. She just wants peace.
Rest and taking care of her garden. But like any good isekai anime, fate doesn't leave her alone for long.
The anime is based on the light novel written by Kisetsu Morita and illustrated by Benio. The first season was produced by studio Revoroot, and recently we got a second season, now with studio Teko.
They managed to maintain the light and colorful style that fits the concept well.
What grabbed me in the first few episodes was the relaxing vibe. It’s not the kind of anime with frantic battles or heavy drama. It’s more of a slice of life with touches of fantasy and humor. Azusa meets other characters and forms an improvised family, and that ends up being the main focus of the story.
One of the first characters to appear is Laika, a red dragon who challenges Azusa to a duel, loses, and then decides to become her disciple. It’s funny how their relationship develops. Soon after comes Halkara, a clumsy elf trying to escape problems she created herself. There are also the slime twins, Falfa and Shalsha, who are like Azusa’s adopted daughters.
All these characters have one thing in common.
Charisma.
Even the more exaggerated or chaotic ones end up winning you over. Their dynamics work well, with plenty of light comedy and cute moments. It’s the kind of anime you watch to unwind after a stressful day.
Of course, not everything is perfect the anime has its weak points. One of them is that the episodes follow a very similar structure. A new character appears, there's some minor conflict, and everything is resolved quickly. There’s no strong central plot, so it may feel repetitive for those who prefer more complex storylines.
Another point is that, although Azusa is super powerful, the anime almost never explores this seriously. The fights are very simple and sometimes end in two hits. But I understand that this isn’t the point.
The idea here isn’t to show an overpowered protagonist solving everything with brute force, but rather how she handles situations peacefully, using empathy and common sense.
One thing that caught my attention is how this anime compares to others with a similar style. For example, it reminded me a lot of BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense, where the protagonist also becomes powerful unintentionally, while trying to protect herself and enjoy the game. Another similar one is That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, which also has that vibe of building a community and living peacefully in a new world.
The big difference is that I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years completely avoids the clichés of epic adventures and good-vs-evil battles.
Here the focus is on everyday life, friendships, and the silly moments of daily living.
That makes the series much more accessible for those who don’t want to overthink, just enjoy something light with good laughs.
If you like this more easygoing anime style, it’s worth checking out By the Grace of the Gods and In the Land of Leadale. They all follow this idea of reincarnation and peaceful living, with protagonists who just want calm but always end up involved in something.
Another positive point I can’t leave out is the animation. The art style is simple but very well done. The colors are soft, the characters have well-crafted expressions, and the backgrounds are beautiful. The soundtrack also matches the tone of the series, with calm music and a very catchy opening.
Anyway, my final opinion is that I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level is an anime made for those who want to relax. Don’t expect major plot twists or epic battles. But if you want to grow fond of cute characters, laugh a little, and end the episodes with a smile on your face, it’s a great choice.
If I had to give a personal score, it would be 8 out of 10.
It’s not a life-changing anime, but it definitely makes your day lighter. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.
