It’s finally summer, that time of the year when the sun feels warmer, and in anime… the magic of summer festivals comes alive!
I still remember watching Toradora! for the first time and seeing Taiga and Ryuuji at the summer festival. The fireworks lighting up the sky, Taiga’s yukata swaying, and that bittersweet feeling of wanting to say something but not quite being able to it made me feel like I was right there with them, holding my breath.

Then there’s Your Lie in April. That scene when Kousei and Kaori go to the festival was so beautiful yet painful, knowing what was coming. The festival was more than just food stalls and fireworks; it was a fleeting moment of youth and happiness they shared.

Or take Nisekoi, where Raku and Chitoge get lost in the crowd. The lantern lights, goldfish scooping, and cotton candy give the episode a dreamy vibe and somehow, it always makes me crave festival food I’ve never even tried!

These festival episodes aren’t just cute fillers. They capture that bittersweet, nostalgic feeling of summer the warmth of friendships, hidden crushes, and those tiny, precious moments that seem to last forever in our hearts.
Even though I’ve never been to a real Japanese summer festival, through anime, I feel like I’ve experienced them so many times. The yukatas, the stalls, the fireworks… It almost feels real.
So this summer, I might not be holding a candied apple under a starlit sky, but I’ll definitely be rewatching those episodes and dreaming a little.
