Rule 10: Let's all have fun playing!
My patience is growing thinner every year. I have been looking forward to the 2nd season of No Game No Life for a larger part of a decade now. However, the latest update on the situation has been nothing less than a disappointment. It has been announced that a manga will be released soon and the story will continue but nothing about an anime series has been confirmed yet.
After the massive success of No Game No Life in 2014, a prequel series was released in 2015 called No Game No Life: Zero. The series went into depth into the origin stories of some of the bigger characters from the anime. Granted it was entertaining and very interesting to learn about the pasts of the characters, it was nothing close to the excellence of the original series.
No Game No Life was special to me for one very simple reason - the animation. It is simply one of the best works I have seen so far, even in 2021.
Madhouse studios have put together some of the most popular animes in history including Hunter x Hunter, Death Note, One Punch Man, and even Parasyte: Maxim among other works. But their work in No Game No Life was exemplary and I honestly think has raised the bar for other studios and aspiring animes to come.
NGNL has some of the most elaborate and descriptive action scenes that are very easy to botch. But Madhouse made sure that each of these scenes were legible and incredibly well-done.
The world of Disboard is supposed to be a whimsical world of games that is closer to a dream or maybe even a fantastic imagination. The world has to be glossy, luminescent, eccentric, mystical, bright, and colorful world. Madhouse hit that nail in the head. Disboard couldn't have looked any better!
The plot of the series is an amazing mix of laughter, excitement, and suspense. It is a story of unrelated siblings who have excelled in gaming and are so good that they are invited by the God of games to come into Disboard and have a go at it.
Most of the early episodes are spent in understanding the inner workings of Disboard and trying to figure out what the end game is. I still remember laughing till my stomach hurt every time the duo introduced themselves as "Blank".
The duo is a breath of fresh air in the new realm. Sora has exceptional skill at reading his opponents/situations and Shiro is incredible at making calculations and being logical...which is a complete contradiction to her physical appearance and behavior.
The duo pretty much clean swipe the new realm very easily and honestly they are their own counters in the way that they cannot win without each other. But the best cliffhanger is the last scene of the first season where Sora decides to take on the other Gods and regions without having to harm or conquer the defeated players by exploiting the 10th rule of the realm.
Yes, this anime series is one of my favorites simply because the animation is way above par (to date) and has a very catchy plot. It has been 7 long years and I am ready to wait even more but I really REALLY want a second season.
