Hello everyone welcome to the anime realm, a place where Otakus and lovers of anime can express themselves without restriction. It is a new month so why not start it off with something entertaining. Stick with me guys, this is going to be an enjoyable ride.
Isekai anime has always been a beautiful genre focused on fantasy. The story usually centers around the main character being transported to another world where he possesses OP abilities necessary for defeating the big bad of this new world. I have always been a fan of this genre, always anticipating the next release of a series that falls within this category.
However overtime this particular troupe became stale and over used with very predictable plots that always seem to follow similar patterns. Bored with nothing to watch, Konosuba was one recommendation I decided to give a try, a decision i will forever remain grateful for. While other Isekai anime take quite the serious tone of action, Konosuba follows a completely different approach filled with comedy and unpredictability making it the best isekai anime I have seen right after Mushoku Tensei.
Authored by Natsume Akatsuki and having just 3 seasons,Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo tells the story of a young boy named Kazuma Satou who spends his whole life playing video games indoors (popularly known as a NEET). The series starts with Kazuma going out to buy the latest release of a video game. On his way back he sees a tractor at the point of hitting a lady and he rushes in to help only to die in the process.
He finds himself in a place called limbo (which is where dead people go to await their final date) where he meets the goddess Aqua who intensely mocks him for his unfortunate demise. Apparently the true cause of his death was not the tractor which was even moving very slow but the shock. The goddess offers him a chance at another life in a new world with an opportunity to choose anything he wants to take with him there. Still angered by her taunting, Kazuma chooses the goddess as his pick to punish her. The both of them are sent off to the new world and together their rather hilarious adventures begin.
In this fantasy world, adventuring happens to be the dominant source of livelihood and being extremely poor since arriving, Kazuma decides to form a party for quests. They recruit Darkness - a female crusader with has terrible fighting abilities and fantasizes being punished or tortured and Megumi - a wizard obsessed with fire and can only do explosive magic so powerful that one spell day leaves completely immobile till dawn the next day. And let's not forget the goddess Aqua who now holds the title of a priestess but offers nothing positive other than crying, drinking and making things worse.
Our hero Kazuma is no different from the rest of his party members, he possesses no unique ability most Isekai heroes have and is always in need of financial support. This dysfunctional union of mishaps that poses as a party are walking disasters that always seem to find themselves in different cycles of problems which either runaway from, cheat, use underhanded tactics, abandon or accidentally resolve in the most comedic way possible so don't expect them to be defeating any demon lord anytime soon. Kazuma's most unique ability is Steal, which for some reason only seems to snatch parties rather than serve its initial purpose.
Instead of the usual heros fighting villains, fancy display of power and Good vs Evil plot we are used to watching with Isekai, Konosuba is filled with half assed quests, the main characters always in debt and getting themselves in unnecessary situations because of their dumb decisions and inadequacies. Yet it is all these events that makes it such an enjoyable journey that keeps one gagging non stop.
So hold on to your socks cause if you are looking for a blend of action and comedy with unfiltered content then Konosuba is the right place to be.
