Hello, how are you, friends of the Anime del Tar community? I hope you are doing well, that you had a good weekend, and that this start to the week is full of blessings. Today I want to talk to you about my impressions of a movie I saw that really caught my attention. I thought it was an adaptation, or let's say it's a bit similar to the movie Moby Dick, but the truth is that in some ways it's not the same.
It's called The White Whale. It's about the friendship between a boy and a whale, but this theme, which is similar to Moby Dick, is different in terms of its depth and tenderness. I'll share a few specific points with you without giving too much away. The film is about the connection between a whale and a boy. There was no need for the whale to communicate by speaking, which we obviously know it cannot do, but rather through gestures and glances, a pure friendship formed between Ken, which was the boy's name, and the whale. They developed a rather unique language, and the connection they had was very special.
It is a very emotional film in which both characters love each other deeply and seek to protect each other, especially the boy and the whale, since we unfortunately live in a world where we harm nature and living beings. It is a story that, let's be honest, does not have a happy ending, but it leaves you with a lot to think about in terms of the things that humans do to nature. It is quite environmentalist, and I read somewhere that this film was also based on, or is a form of protest against, the indiscriminate whaling that we all know takes place in Japan
Tobe! Kujira no Peek (1991) Trailer
One of the things I want to mention is how beautiful and moving the friendship between the whale and Ken is: her expressiveness, her eyes, how they convey so much... and Ken's innocence towards her, his need to protect her and his fear that people will hurt her or hunt her. Everything she is exposed to, unfortunately... as I said at the beginning, it is a film that, like many others, does not have a happy ending, but it leaves us with a very beautiful and nostalgic reflection. Unfortunately, as we can see, the whale is very important to Ken; he sees her as a good friend, as a unique representation of the ocean. Humans, on the other hand, see her as meat, as a trophy, or as a means to satisfy their need for money, etc.
I mean, the animation is quite beautiful; in fact, it also makes you feel a little nostalgic, you connect beyond the visual and you feel a little sensitive about the coldness of human beings and Ken's constant suffering with the whale. There is a lot of sadness, a lot of melancholy, but it opens our eyes to the fact that we must be empathetic and not ignore those beings who have no voice but convey their love through their expressions. I don't know if you've seen the movie, it's from way back in 1991. I'm sure that if you love nature, ecology, and are very sensitive to animals, this movie will touch you deeply. Please go see it. Have a great start to your week!
