Hello hive, while a proper anime season arrives, I've been watching older shows I had pending for a time now. Mech anime is not exactly my favorite, but I do love some of them. The Gundam series is quite good in general; it provides intense emotional beginnings, which makes you feel there is something more than robots fighting. Thus, I recently watched Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. It felt a bit of like a Netflix show, but it has all the characteristics of a proper Mecha anime. Here I share my thoughts about this series.

Hola, colmena, mientras llega una temporada de anime como Dios manda, he estado viendo series antiguas que tenía pendientes desde hace tiempo. El anime de mechas no es precisamente mi favorito, pero algunos me encantan. La serie Gundam es bastante buena en general; ofrece inicios muy emotivos, que te hacen sentir que hay algo más que peleas de robots. Por eso, hace poco vi Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Parecía un poco una serie de Netflix, pero tiene todas las características de un buen anime de mechas. Aquí les comparto mi opinión sobre esta serie.
As a Summary, The Witch from Mercury tells the story of a young girl named Suletta, who attends the prestigious spacian Asticassia School. There she meets Miorine, who is the daughter of Mr. Rembran, the president of The Benerit Group. This institution, composed of three main important families, creates and regulates the use of Mobile suits and exists in discord with the people from planet Earth. As a mandate in the school, the strongest pilot is immediately engaged with Miorine, and for diverse reasons, that pilot ends up being Suletta.
In this universe, humans conquer space and live in different colonies around the solar system. Suletta comes from Mercury. She is the mobile suit pilot of Aerial, which holds more secrets than she thinks. All humans from space are called Spacians, while Earthians are those from planet Earth. There is a considerable conflict between these two groups, and in the middle of all that, there is a major conflict with the spatial kind of mobile suits called Gundam. These suits operate using the GUND format, which poses great danger to their pilots.

En resumen, La Bruja de Mercurio cuenta la historia de una joven llamada Suletta, quien asiste a la prestigiosa Escuela Espacial Asticassia. Allí conoce a Miorine, hija del Sr. Rembran, presidente del Grupo Benerit. Esta institución, compuesta por tres importantes familias, crea y regula el uso de los Mobile Suits y existe en desacuerdo con la gente del planeta Tierra. Como mandato de la escuela, el piloto más fuerte se enfrenta inmediatamente a Miorine y, por diversas razones, esa piloto termina siendo Suletta.En este universo, los humanos conquistan el espacio y viven en diferentes colonias alrededor del sistema solar. Suletta proviene de Mercurio. Es la piloto de Mobile Suits de Aerial, que guarda más secretos de los que cree. Todos los humanos del espacio se llaman espaciales, mientras que los terrestres son los del planeta Tierra. Existe un conflicto considerable entre estos dos grupos, y en medio de todo esto, surge un conflicto importante con los Mobile Suits espaciales llamados Gundam. I love how the story begins with a tragedy. It provides emotional intensity and stimulates curiosity to unveil the secrets and reasons behind the tragedy. Women working on the special technology for piloting Gundam were called witches, and in a Witch hunt, they were chased and eliminated because of that same technology. While this is science fiction, I love the slightly mystical tone it gets from this premise. Why were women persecuted? Why is the technology dangerous? And, why are Gundam suits forbidden? Those are questions that lead your journey through this anime story.

Me encanta cómo la historia comienza con una tragedia. Proporciona intensidad emocional y estimula la curiosidad por descubrir los secretos y las razones detrás de la tragedia. Las mujeres que trabajaban en la tecnología especial para pilotar Gundam eran llamadas brujas, y en una cacería de brujas, fueron perseguidas y eliminadas debido a esa misma tecnología. Si bien esto es ciencia ficción, me encanta el tono ligeramente místico que adquiere a partir de esta premisa. ¿Por qué se persiguió a las mujeres? ¿Por qué es peligrosa la tecnología? ¿Y por qué están prohibidos los trajes Gundam? Estas son preguntas que guían tu viaje a través de esta historia de anime.
On the positive side, Gundam action is good and frequent enough. The story presents several moral dilemmas and secret-uncovering moments. You can feel both curious and rewarded in the same episode because of the complexity of the story. There are many storylines to follow, and each one follows its own time. I also feel surprised when the main plot unfolds. The mystery around Suletta's family was not something I could anticipate, but it was a bold story move I came to enjoy.

En el lado positivo, la acción de Gundam es buena y bastante frecuente. La historia presenta varios dilemas morales y momentos de descubrimiento de secretos. Puedes sentir curiosidad y satisfacción en el mismo episodio debido a la complejidad de la historia. Hay muchas historias que seguir y cada una tiene su propio tiempo. También me sorprende el desarrollo de la trama principal. El misterio en torno a la familia de Suletta no era algo que pudiera anticipar, pero fue una jugada audaz que disfruté.
Sadly, there are some holes in the story or simply aspects purposely ignored to focus the story on something else. From these elements, we lose almost entirely the academy as a high school environment for learning. You practically never see a teacher in the story at all. The complexity of the conflict between Earthians and Spacians is also not explored sufficiently, in my opinion. Lastly, the focus on a single Gundam, Aerial, diminishes the opportunities for other pilots and other combats to develop in the story. Diversity in the Gundam suits is something we all look forward to.
Nonetheless, I do recommend the show; I believe it is worth watching. The story is intriguing and elaborated; the action is good and frequent; and the spatial theme gives an extra something to this interesting timeline. I also feel attracted by the more complex concept around piloting Gundam and the GUND format technology.

Lamentablemente, la historia presenta algunas lagunas o simplemente aspectos que se ignoran a propósito para centrarla en otra cosa. Con estos elementos, perdemos casi por completo la academia como entorno de aprendizaje en una escuela secundaria. Prácticamente nunca vemos a un profesor en la historia. En mi opinión, la complejidad del conflicto entre terrícolas y espaciales tampoco se explora lo suficiente. Por último, centrarse en un solo Gundam, Aerial, reduce las oportunidades de que otros pilotos y otros combates se desarrollen en la historia. La diversidad en los trajes Gundam es algo que todos esperamos con ilusión.Aun así, recomiendo la serie; creo que vale la pena verla. La historia es intrigante y elaborada; la acción es buena y frecuente; y la temática espacial aporta un toque extra a esta interesante línea temporal. También me atrae el concepto más complejo en torno al pilotaje de Gundam y la tecnología del formato GUND.
