I split the Season 3 review into 2 parts for several reasons. After the 1st, this arc is full of strong events and scenes (1 and 2 too, but they were not that big in terms of their epicness or impact on the universe), and thus - one review would be too long. Secondly, I want to give myself pleasure. It is true that the 4th season has already been announced, but we will wait for the next ones (I think - the difference between S1 and S2 was also small, we had to wait 2-3 years for S3). Besides, volume 4 is quite boring, so I will not rush the screening. I will see its adaptation in spring 2023, maybe a little later. The first half of season 3 brilliantly transferred the content from the book to the language of animation. It is true that they introduced some changes (they removed some elements, such as super-advanced robots that did part of human work, changed the order of most of the events), but they do not matter much - I was only surprised that the initial chapters of the book (because I remember later a bit weaker, so I can't judge) differ from what I read. Besides - the book was exemplarily transferred to the screen. In a few moments I had the impression that they were literally quoting the book, just like Peter Jackson in Part 3 of Lord of the Rings.
Well ... One of my favorite anime is finally back! Reinhard established himself as the chief army commander and prime minister (which, combined with Kaiser, who is still too young to understand what the command and management of the state is all about, gives him full power). Yang, in turn, has to prepare to fight the politicians who fear the increase in popularity among citizens and the growing position in the army. The tactic genius, however, is an exceptional man - he is completely ignorant of money and influence. Starting from the end - he needs these only when he wants to impose his will (which is rare, you have to piss him off very hard - like that commander who trains recruits too hard) or he has to (a bit more often, but he only does it when there really is no other option). Money is important to him only in one matter - he wants to buy a small house, away from civilization + have upkeep for himself, a potential partner and unhampered access to alcohol until the end of his days. Yang is technically an alcoholic, but he doesn't get drunk with it too much - he's enough to be drunk on alcohol, feeling relaxed most of the day. As Yang said, "If I wanted influence, I would become a politician. I want big and quick money, so I preferred to join the army." Reinhard has no such dilemmas, he can rule like my dream dictator - a conservative liberal. As the master of strategy said, "If we want a stable society that will develop, there must be fair and equal law for all, and fair and low taxes." Ok, if someone wants to be exact, he said it a bit differently, but I remember this stage from the books and I know what he meant. This makes him popular with the citizens of the Empire, and the soldiers love him and are ready to fight for him like lions. In the case of Yang, it is similar, but he does not have political support, and his allies have their hands tied - even if they could and wanted to help their colleague, Job Trunicht would quickly get rid of them. Either it will compromise them or block them from acting (and it has a wide range of possibilities, especially when it has stable social support). If that doesn't help, he will send them away from Yang or Heinessen or take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Earth Cult or radical right-wing cowards - he will physically eliminate them, at best with an accident. You will find out about it this and next season.
One of the most important characters in this arc is Karl Gustav Kempff. Julian Mintz, who has a successful baptism of fire, is equally important - during his first fight he destroyed 3 fighters and 1 destroyer, but I will write more about him in the 2nd text and the review of the 4th season, where he has more importance for the story. As I read the passages devoted to the commander of the empire, I had one thought in my head - an ordinary man, without any special abilities, who is neither the worst nor the best. He has not had any spectacular successes, but also no insulting defeats (unlike Bittenfeld). Oh, an average commander, an average and generally honest man who wants to conscientiously carry out his work. For this, a dear father and husband. Unfortunately, this is also his disadvantage - he lacks exceptional skills and strong character (not in the sense that he is a weakling - the peasant is as big as a bear, he simply cannot always think soberly and cannot withdraw when there is no chance of success. - for comparison, Ovlesser is very similar to him, but despite his Neanderthal behavior and appearance, he can find himself in the situation better), unlike Kircheis, his successors, Oberstein and several others. Kempff has been given the task of taking over a lost space fortress. The goal would be simpler (and maybe even much simpler) for Mttermeyer or his friend, but Oberstein and Reinhard chose him. Or, in fact, Oberstein, Reinhard only agreed to this and added a reason from himself - the possibility of correcting his mistake from last season. The gray eminence of the empire chose him for purely political reasons - Reinhard cannot have the number 2. Number 2 in the Empire would be a threat to him, Reinhard could not focus 100% on the implementation of his assumptions, but would have to devote some of his attention to the political games within his countries. It would deprive him of his time and vital energy for essential things - managing the state and fighting democrats. This decision pissed off the rest of the Kaiser commanders, who see no point in his actions and believe that Oberstein wants to harm the Empire and their boss.
Speaking of such activities, Rubinsky has begun to pursue his own goals this season. He is the embodiment of right-wing conspiracy theories about Jews and their influence around the world. Maybe I will regret these words, but I will say it straightforward, honestly and objectively, as I like - the inhabitants of Phezzan are as disliked as the inhabitants of Israel before the beginning of WW2 in Europe (contrary to the opinion of the left, not only Poles were anti-Semites). But it takes a great deal of bad will not to admire them, at least in some respects. And Rubinsky is the worst (and at the same time the best) of them all. If he has won the recognition of Oberstein, he must be special. He treats people as pawns to achieve his goal - to win the whole universe for himself. It is true that his plan is ... Hmm, to put it mildly, moderately serious and I'm surprised that the bald man believes in him so much. After all, how am I supposed to believe in a country that does not exist without an empire that would crash if Reinhard sent Mittermeyer there? If the Wolf had received an order from the Kaiser, there would not have been any stone on the stone left. So what if they have money and are holding the enemies of the Empire by the balls? Money is necessary to win the war, yes, but in that respect the Empire is more independent, and they would have been better off without trading. Of course, they would have felt it, but much less than the other parties to the conflict. Sure, the Phezzan leader plan is feasible (as long as certain conditions are met and the Phezzan boss is very lucky), but it has so many points where things can go wrong (apart from the fact that he is weak) that the chance of failing is much greater. Nevertheless, although the fragments devoted to cosmic Israel are the most boring in the whole LotGH, episode 6 had a great atmosphere at times. Especially the finale, as Rubinsky's underlings eliminate Oberstein's spies. And if you are still not convinced by the comparison to Jews (although the anime shows it clearly), I recommend reading the books. Tanaka in them leaves no doubt as to the source of his inspiration.
As for the graphics, I have no major complaints again. The whole thing was drawn very well, the animation is smooth, the drawings are detailed and beautiful (when they showed the interior of the former Empire fortress, I wanted to stop the episode every now and then, make printscreen to save it on a Windows wallpaper). There were a few worse-drawn scenes or characters, but it was not such a disproportion as, for example, in the movie "Broly" (where you can easily distinguish scenes where Toei Animation worked hard, from those made only with CGI - i.e. those noticeably worse). I saw them, but didn't react like "Oh shit, it looks bad!" Yes, I will probably complain about CGI in a few years, but that's normal, this element is probably the fastest aging in animations. As for the soundtrack, this is the weakest season. Aside from one song, all the new songs did not make any impression on me. Okay, they fit the atmosphere of the anime and previous soundtracks, but they don't have anything special about them. Just any kind of work, as if Hans Zimmer wrote this music. Of course, I omit here the songs that were written for the 1st and 2nd seasons, these are, as usual, good or very good. Opening and ending are a bit better - both the intro and outro are generally good, but nothing more than that. They both don't even have a start to Binary Star or Tranquility (or Season 1 ending).
To sum up - although the 1st half of S3 did not have a lot of action, there was a lot of exposure, conversations between characters etc. (get ready, in 4 it will be even worse - there will be more of it and in a much worse form), as usual, it was very pleasant for me to watch. If the other half meets my expectations, and so far I have no reason to believe otherwise, I would rather rate the 3rd season 8 + / 10. A very good adaptation of a very good anime.
Z kilku powodów podzieliłem recenzję 3 sezonu na 2 części. Po 1. ten arc obfituje w mocne wydarzenia i sceny (1 i 2 też, ale nie były one tak duże, jeśli chodzi o ich epickość, czy wpływ na uniwersum), a co za tym idzie - jedna recenzja byłaby zbyt długa. Po 2. chcę sobie dawkować przyjemność. Co prawda 4 sezon został już zapowiedziany, ale na kolejne sobie poczekamy (tak mi się wydaje - różnica między S1, a S2 też była niewielka, na S3 musieliśmy poczekać 2-3 lata). Poza tym, 4 tom dość nudny, więc nie będę się śpieszył z seansem. Obejrzę jego adaptację wiosną 2023, może nieco później. Pierwsza połowa 3 sezonu świetnie przeniosła treść z książki na język animacji. Co prawda wprowadzili pewne zmiany (usunęli niektóre elementy, jak np. super-zaawansowane roboty, które wykonywały część pracy ludzi, zmienili kolejność większości wydarzeń), ale nie mają one większego znaczenia - jedynie zdziwiłem się tym, że początkowe rozdziały książki (bo późniejsze pamiętam nieco słabiej, więc nie mogę ocenić) różnią się od tego, co przeczytałem. Poza tym - wzorowo przeniesiono książkę na ekran. W paru momentach miałem wręcz wrażenie, że dosłownie cytują książkę, tak jak Peter Jackson w 3 części "Lord of the Rings".
Zatem... W końcu powróciło jedno z moich ulubionych anime! Reinhard ugruntował swoją pozycję, jako główny dowódca armii i premier (co w połączeniu z Kaiserem, który jest jeszcze zbyt młody, by zrozumieć na czym polega dowodzenie i zarządzanie w państwem, daje mu pełną władzę). Yang z kolei, musi się przygotować do walki z politykami, którzy obawiają się wzrostem popularności wśród obywateli oraz rosnącą pozycją w armii. Geniusz taktyki jest jednak wyjątkowym człowiekiem - kompletnie nie zależy mu na pieniądzach oraz wpływach. Zaczynając od końca - te mu są potrzebne tylko wtedy, gdy chce narzucić swoją wolę (co się zdarza rzadko, trzeba go wyjątkowo mocno wkurzyć - jak ten dowódca, który zbyt ostro ćwiczy rekrutów) lub musi (nieco częściej, ale i tak robi to tylko wtedy, gdy naprawdę nie ma innego wyjścia). Pieniądze są dla niego istotne tylko w 1 kwestii - chce sobie kupić mały domek, z dala od cywilizacji + mieć utrzymanie do końca swoich dni dla siebie, potencjalnej partnerki i nieskrępowanego dostępu do alkoholu. Yang technicznie jest alkoholikiem, ale nie upija się nim za bardzo - wystarczy mu stan upojenia alkoholem, uczucie wyluzowania przez większość dnia. Jak to powiedział Yang - "Gdyby mi zależało na wpływach, to zostałbym politykiem. Zależy mi dużych i szybkich pieniądzach, więc wolałem dołączyć do armii". Reinhard nie ma takich dylematów, może rządzić tak jak mój wymarzony dyktator - konserwatywny liberał. Jak to powiedział mistrz strategii - "Jeżeli chcemy mieć stabilne społeczeństwo, które będzie się rozwijało, to musi być sprawiedliwe i równe prawo dla wszystkich oraz sprawiedliwe i niskie podatki". Ok, jeżeli ktoś chce być ścisły, to powiedział to odrobinę inaczej, ale pamiętam ten etap z książek i wiem, co miał na myśli. Dzięki temu cieszy się popularnością wśród obywateli Imperium, a żołnierze go uwielbiają i są gotowi walczyć dla niego, jak lwy. W przypadku Yanga niby jest podobnie, ale nie posiada on politycznego wsparcia, a jego sojusznicy mają związane ręce - nawet gdyby mogli i chcieli pomóc swojemu koledze, to Job Trunicht szybko się ich pozbędzie. Albo ich skompromituje albo zablokuje im możliwość działania (a ma szeroką paletę możliwości, zwłaszcza jak ma stabilne poparcie społeczne). Gdy to nie pomoże, to wyśle ich daleko od Yanga lub Heinessen lub skorzysta z możliwości, jakie oferuje mu Kult Ziemi lub radykalne, prawicowe tchórze - fizycznie ich wyeliminuje, najwyżej wytłumaczy się to nieszczęśliwym wypadkiem. W tym i kolejnym sezonie przekonacie się o tym.
Jednym z ważniejszych bohaterów w tym arcu jest Karl Gustav Kempff. Niemniej istotny jest Julian Mintz, który zaliczył udany chrzest bojowy - podczas swojej pierwszej potyczki zniszczył 3 myśliwce oraz 1 niszczyciel, ale o nim napiszę więcej w 2 tekście oraz recenzji 4 sezonu, gdzie ma większe znaczenie dla historii. Gdy czytałem fragmenty poświęcone dowódcy imperium, to miałem w głowie jedną myśl - zwykły człowiek, bez żadnych wyjątkowych zdolności, który nie jest ani najgorszy ani najlepszy. Nie ma na swoim koncie spektakularnych sukcesów, ale też nie ma urągających godności porażek (w przeciwieństwie do Bittenfelda). Ot, przeciętny dowódca, przeciętny i w sumie poczciwy człowiek, który chce sumiennie realizować swoją pracę. Za to kochany ojciec i mąż. Niestety, jest to też jego wadą - brakuje mu wyjątkowych umiejętności oraz mocnego charakteru (nie w tym sensie, że to słabeusz - chłop jest wielki jak niedźwiedź, po prostu nie zawsze umie trzeźwo myśleć oraz nie potrafi się wycofać, gdy nie ma szans na sukces - dla porównania Ovlesser jest do niego bardzo podobny, ale mimo swojego zachowania i wygląduNeandertalczyka, potrafi lepiej odnaleźć się w sytuacji), w przeciwieństwie do Kircheisa, jego następców, Obersteina i kilku innych. Kempff dostał zadanie, które polega na przejęciu utraconej kosmicznej fortecy. Cel byłby prostszy (a może nawet znacznie prostszy) dla Mttermeyera lub jego przyjaciela, ale Oberstein i Reinhard wybrali jego. Czy w zasadzie Oberstein, Reinhard jedynie się co do tego zgodził i dodał powód od siebie - możliwość naprawienia swojego błędu z poprzedniego sezonu. Szara eminencja imperium wybrała go z powodów czysto politycznych - Reinhard nie może mieć numeru 2. Numer 2 w Imperium byłby dla niego groźny, Reinhard nie mógłby się skupić w 100% na realizacji swoich założeń, tylko musiałby poświęcić część swojej uwagi na rozgrywkach politycznych wewnątrz swojego państwa. Odebrałoby mu to czas i siły witalne na rzeczy istotne - zarządzanie państwem oraz walkę z demokratami. Ta decyzja wkurzyła pozostałych dowódców Kaisera, którzy nie dostrzegają sensu w jego działaniach i uważają, że Oberstein chce zaszkodzić Imperium i ich szefowi.
A skoro mowa o takich działaniach, Rubinsky w tym sezonie zaczął realizować swoje własne cele. Jestucieleśnieniem teorii spiskowych zwolenników prawicy, które dotyczą Żydów i ich wpływów na całym świecie. Może pożałuję tych słów, ale powiem to wprost, szczerze i obiektywnie, tak jak lubię - mieszkańcy Phezzanu są tak samo nielubiani, jak mieszkańcy Izraela przed rozpoczęciem 2 WŚ w Europie (wbrew opinii lewicy, nie tylko Polacy byli antysemitami). Trzeba jednak bardzo dużo złej woli, by ich nie podziwiać, przynajmniej w niektórych aspektach. A Rubinsky jest najgorszy (a jednocześnie najlepszy) z nich wszystkich. Skoro zdobył uznanie Obersteina, to musi być wyjątkowy. Traktuje ludzi jak pionki, które służą realizacji jego celu - zdobycie całego wszechświata dla siebie. Co prawda jego plan jest... Hm, najdelikatniej rzecz ujmując, średnio poważny i aż jestem zdziwiony, że łysy tak w niego wierzy. No bo jak mam uwierzyć w państwo, które nie istnieje bez imperium, które by się zesrało, gdyby Reinhard wysłał tam Mittermeyera? Gdyby Wilk dostał rozkaz od Kaisera, to nie zostałby tam kamień na kamieniu. Co z tego, że mają pieniądze i trzymają za jaja przeciwników Imperium? Pieniądze są niezbędne do wygrania wojny, zgadza się, ale pod tym względem Imperium jest bardziej niezależne i lepiej poradziliby sobie bez handlu. Oczywiście, odczuliby to, ale dużo słabiej niż pozostałe strony konfliktu. Oczywiście, plan przywódcy Phezzanu, jest możliwy do zrealizowania (o ile zostaną spełnione określone warunki, a szef Phezzanu będzie miał mnóstwo szczęścia), ale ma tyle punktów, w których coś może pójść nie tak (pomijając fakt, że jest on słaby), że szansa na to, że się nie uda, jest znacznie większa. Niemniej, mimo że fragmenty poświęcone kosmicznemu Izraelowi są najnudniejsze w całym LotGH, to odcinek 6 miał momentami świetny klimat. Zwłaszcza finał, jak podwładni Rubinsky'ego eliminują szpiegów Obersteina. A jeżeli nadal nie przekonuje Was porównanie do Żydów (mimo, że anime pokazuje je jak na dłoni), to polecam przeczytać książki. Tanaka w nich nie pozostawia wątpliwości, co do źródła swojej inspiracji.
Jeśli chodzi o grafikę, to ponownie nie mam większych zarzutów. Całość została narysowana bardzo dobrze, animacja jest płynna, rysunki są szczegółowe i śliczne (gdy pokazywali wnętrzne dawnej twierdzy Imperium, to aż chciałem co chwilę zatrzymywać odcinek, robić printscreen, by zapisać ją sobie na tapetę do Windowsa). Było kilka gorzej narysowanych scen, czy postaci, ale nie była to taka dysproporcja, jak np. w filmie "Broly" (gdzie łatwo można odróżnić sceny, przy których Toei Animation przyłożyło się do pracy, od tych wykonanych tylko za pomocą CGI - czyli tych zauważalnie gorszych). Dostrzegłem je, ale nie zareagowałem w sposób "O kurwa, ale to źle wygląda!". Fakt, pewnie za parę lat będę narzekał na CGI, ale to akurat normalne, ten element starzeje się chyba najszybciej w animacjach. Jeżeli chodzi o soundtrack, to jest to najsłabszy sezon. Pomijając jedną piosenkę, to wszystkie nowe utwory nie zrobiły na mnie żadnego wrażenia. Ok, pasują do klimatu anime oraz poprzednich soundtracków, ale nie mają w sobie niczego charakterystycznego. Ot byle jaka robota, jakby tę muzykę napisał Hans Zimmer. Pomijam tutaj rzecz jasna piosenki, które zostały napisane na potrzeby 1 i 2 sezonu, te jak zwykle są dobre lub bardzo dobre. Nieco lepiej jest z openingiem i endingiem - zarówno intro, jak i outro są generalnie dobre, ale nic ponad to. Oba nie mają nawet startu do Binary Star albo Tranquility (czy endingu 1 sezonu).
Reasumując - mimo że 1 połowa S3 nie miała dużo akcji, za to było dużo ekspozycji, rozmów między postaciami etc. (przygotujcie się, w 4 będzie jeszcze gorzej - będzie tego więcej i w dużo gorszej formie), to jak zwykle oglądało mi się to wyjątkowo przyjemnie. Jeżeli druga połowa spełni moje oczekiwania, a póki co nie mam żadnych powodów, by uważać, że będzie inaczej, to raczej ocenię 3 sezon na 8+/10. Bardzo dobra adaptacja bardzo dobrego anime.
