Hello everyone, dear friends of The Anime Realm, I hope you're having a great day. Today I'm sharing a new review. Finally, after years of people recommending it to me, I decided to watch a series that, I swear, is a little gem of horror... so yes, today we're talking about... Another. We're going to talk about mystery, about deaths, about an atmosphere that will give you the chills, and, of course, about an umbrella that, believe me, you won't forget. Another is a 2012 anime based on a novel... and mind you, I'm not a big fan of horror anime, I usually avoid them, but this one was recommended to me so, so much that I finally gave in and said: "alright, let's give it a shot." It goes something like this: we have our protagonist, Kōichi Sakakibara, a boy who moves from Tokyo to a small town called Yomiyama because his dad is away. Right before school starts, bam!, he gets sick and ends up in the hospital... long story short, he arrives late to school, around May, and that's when he realizes that everything is... weird.

Very, very weird. He's sent to class 3-C, which turns out to have a serious curse on it for the last 26 years. It turns out that in this class, tragedies happen one after another, every single year... and the "solution" they found to deal with the curse is insane: they pretend one of the students doesn't exist. They ignore them completely, can you believe it? All to "make space" for a supposed extra student who, according to them, is dead but still attends class with the others.

Hola a todos, queridos amigos de The Anime Realm, espero que estén genial el día de hoy, les compartire una nueva reseña, por fin, después de años de que me la recomendaran, me animé a ver una serie que, les juro, es una joyita del horror.. así que sí, hoy toca hablar de… Another. Vamos a hablar de misterio, de muertes, de un ambiente que te pone los pelos de punta y, cómo no, de un paraguas que, créanme, no se les va a olvidar.. Another es un anime del 2012, basado en una novela.. y ojo, que yo no soy muy fan del anime de terror, la verdad es que casi siempre les saco la vuelta, pero es que me la recomendaron tanto, pero tanto, que al final caí y dije: "a ver, pues, vamos a darle".. La cosa va más o menos así: tenemos a nuestro prota, Kōichi Sakakibara, un chico que se muda de Tokio a un pueblito llamado Yomiyama porque su papá anda fuera, justo antes de empezar las clases, ¡zaz!, se enferma y termina en el hospital.. total, que llega tarde a la escuela, como en mayo, y ahí es cuando se da cuenta de que todo está… raro.

Muy, muy raro. Lo mandan al salón 3-C, que resulta que tiene una maldición bien cabrona de hace como 26 años, resulta que en esa clase siempre pasan tragedias, una tras otra, cada año.. y la "solución" que encontraron para lidiar con la maldición es una locura: hacen como que uno de los alumnos no existe. Lo ignoran por completo, ¿pueden creerlo? Todo para "hacerle espacio" a un supuesto alumno extra que, según ellos, está muerto pero sigue yendo a clases con los demás.

And this is where things get really good. It turns out that in Kōichi's class, the one they ignore is a girl named Mei Misaki... you know, the typical mysterious girl with an eyepatch, super quiet, to whom no one, absolutely no one, speaks a word... it's as if she doesn't exist. Of course, Kōichi, being the new guy who doesn't understand a damn thing, is left wondering "what the hell is going on here?". It gets to a point where he even doubts if he's going crazy, if he's the only one who can see her, or if she's just a ghost... that's how they hook you. It's the perfect bait, because you spend the whole series asking yourself: Is Mei a ghost? Is the curse real? How the hell do you stop this? Obviously, Kōichi, like any self-respecting horror protagonist, doesn't give a damn about the warnings and decides to talk to her. And right there, folks, is when everything goes to hell and the damn curse is unleashed.

One of the things that blew my mind about Another is how it plays with you... it doesn't let you get ahead of anything. Nowadays, with many series, you know who the bad guy is, how it's going to end, the whole deal, within ten minutes. Not here. Another takes you down one path and just when you think you've figured it out, bam!, it throws a sharp turn at you that leaves you looking the other way... it's brilliant and frustrating at the same time, you know? It's like trying to catch water; just when you think you have it, it slips through your fingers. And it achieves this with a fairly contained, well-written story that keeps you on the edge of your seat for all 12 episodes. And hey, we have to talk about the real star of the show: Mei Misaki. What a character! No wonder she was a viral phenomenon back in the day... I remember seeing her face EVERYWHERE, on Facebook, on Twitter... she was half the world's profile picture! She was, basically, the Pochita of her time... it's her design, that gothic-emo vibe with the eyepatch, which was on its way out by then, she made it cool again. But it's not just her appearance; for almost the entire series, she is the center of all doubt. Is she real? Is she the ghost? Honestly, she was one of the two reasons this anime was such a massive hit.

Y aquí, es donde la cosa se pone buenísima, resulta que en la clase de Kōichi, a la que ignoran es a una chica llamada Mei Misaki.. ya saben, la típica chica misteriosa con un parche en el ojo, súper callada, a la que nadie, pero nadie, le dirige la palabra.. es como si no existiera, claro, Kōichi, que es el nuevo y no entiende ni madres, se queda con cara de "¿pero qué pedo aquí?". Llega un punto en que hasta duda si no se estará volviendo loco, si es el único que la puede ver o si de plano es un fantasma.. ahí te enganchan. Esa es la carnada perfecta, porque toda la serie te la pasas preguntándote: ¿Mei es un fantasma? ¿La maldición es real? ¿Cómo carajos se detiene esto? Obviamente, Kōichi, como buen prota de terror que se respete, le valen madres las advertencias y decide hablarle, ahí, banda, es cuando todo se va al carajo y se desata la pinche maldición.

Una de las cosas que más me voló la cabeza de Another es cómo juega contigo.. no te deja adelantarte a nada, hoy en día, con muchas series a los diez minutos ya sabes quién es el malo, cómo va a acabar, todo el rollo. Aquí no, Another te lleva por un camino y justo cuando crees que ya entendiste, ¡pum!, te mete un volantazo que te deja viendo para otro lado.. es genial y frustrante al mismo tiempo, ¿saben? Es como querer agarrar agua, justo cuando crees que ya la tienes, se te escapa de las manos, y lo logra con una historia bastante contenida, bien escrita, que te tiene al borde del asiento sus 12 capítulos.Y a ver, tenemos que hablar de la verdadera estrella del show: Mei Misaki. ¡Qué personajazo! Con razón en su momento fue un fenómeno viral.. me acuerdo de ver su cara por TODOS lados, en Facebook, en Twitter ¡Era la foto de perfil de medio mundo! Fue, básicamente, la Pochita de su época.. es que su diseño, ese rollo gótico-emo con el parche, que para ese entonces ya iba de salida, ella lo volvió a poner de moda, pero no es solo la apariencia, durante casi toda la serie, ella es el centro de toda la duda. ¿Es real? ¿Es el fantasma? La verdad, ella fue una de las dos razones por las que este anime la rompió tan cabrón.

And the other pillar, obviously, is the deaths. Look, let's be honest, Another isn't the goriest series in the world, but the deaths... oof, the deaths! They're creative, they scare the hell out of you, and they have a visual shock factor that leaves you cold... they're very much in the style of Final Destination, you know? You know something bad is going to happen, but you have no damn idea how or when, and when it finally does, your jaw drops... of course, I have to mention the most iconic scene, the one everyone remembers: the umbrella one. I won't say more to avoid spoilers, but that thing is seared into the entire internet's memory for a reason. It's not the only one, mind you. There's a teacher who has a rather... personal end, an elevator that decides it doesn't want to work anymore in the worst possible way... each death is a little horror show that's really well done... but none of this would work without the atmosphere, and here, honestly, is where Another is a work of art.

The art is insane, the backgrounds have an incredible level of detail and there's always a feeling that everything is rotting... everything looks old, rusty, falling apart. The buildings look abandoned... if they're outside, there are crows on the roofs, just watching you, as if waiting to see when you'll fall. They use a lot of dark reds... and the dolls... man, the damn dolls! They're everywhere, old, broken, missing an arm, giving you a creepy vibe that's hard to explain. Visually, everything is designed to make you feel uncomfortable... And the sound... the sound is a goddamn masterpiece! It's the other half of the atmosphere. From the moment it starts, the music makes you uneasy. It's not just melodies, it's weird effects, strings that sound wrong on purpose... Imagine an entire orchestra having a psychedelic fit while electronic hums that give you goosebumps play... that's the soundtrack. It never leaves you alone.

Even in calm moments, it's there in the background, with a few piano notes to remind you that at any moment, everything is going to go to hell... the tension never stops. Now, I have to be honest with you: the series starts a bit slow. The first three episodes take their time, planting the mystery, introducing you to the town and the curse. I myself was thinking at first: "Okay, this is going very slowly...". But believe me, it's one of those that simmers on low heat so the punch hurts more... those chapters are necessary; the intrigue of knowing who's next keeps you glued to the screen... but it's at the end when the series floors the accelerator and doesn't let go.

Y el otro pilar, obviamente, son las muertes. A ver, seamos sinceros, Another no es que sea la serie más gore del mundo, pero las muertes… ¡uf, las muertes! Son creativas, te sacan un susto cabrón y tienen un factor de shock visual que te deja helado.. son muy al estilo de Destino Final, ¿saben? Sabes que algo malo va a pasar, pero no tienes ni puta idea de cómo ni cuándo, y cuando por fin pasa, te quedas con la boca abierta.. claro, tengo que mencionar la escena más icónica, la que todo el mundo recuerda: la del paraguas. No digo más para no spoilear, pero esa madre se quedó grabada en la cabeza de todo el internet por algo, no es la única, ¿eh? Hay un profe que tiene un final bastante… personal, un elevador que decide que ya no quiere funcionar de la peor manera posible… cada muerte es un pequeño show de horror que está muy bien hecho.. pero nada de esto jalaría sin la atmósfera, y aquí, la verdad, es donde Another es una obra de arte.

El arte es una locura, los fondos tienen un nivel de detalle increíble y siempre hay una sensación de que todo se está pudriendo.. todo se ve viejo, oxidado, cayéndose a pedazos, los edificios parecen abandonados.. si están afuera, hay cuervos en los techos, nomás mirándote, como esperando a ver a qué hora te caes. Usan un montón de rojos oscuros.. y las muñecas… ¡uf, las pinches muñecas! Están por todos lados, viejas, rotas, sin un brazo, dándote un mal rollo que no te explico, visualmente, todo está hecho para que te sientas incómodo.. Y el sonido… ¡el sonido es una puta maravilla! Es la otra mitad de la atmósfera, desde que empieza, la música te pone inquieto. No son solo melodías, son efectos raros, cuerdas que suenan mal a propósito… Imagínense a toda una orquesta teniendo un ataque psicodélico mientras suenan zumbidos electrónicos que te ponen la piel de gallina.. así es el soundtrack, nunca te deja en paz.

Incluso en los momentos de calma, ahí se queda de fondo, con unas notitas de piano para recordarte que en cualquier momento todo se va a ir al diablo.. la tensión nunca para. Ahora, tengo que serles honesto: la serie arranca medio lenta, los primeros tres capítulos se la llevan con calma, plantando el misterio, presentándote el pueblo y la maldición. Yo mismo al principio estaba como de: "Ok, esto va muy despacio...". Pero créanme, es una de esas que se cocina a fuego lento para que el chingadazo duela más.. esos capítulos son necesarios, la intriga de saber quién es el siguiente te tiene pegado a la pantalla.. pero es al final cuando la serie mete el acelerador a fondo y ya no te suelta.

That's when the story takes a brutal psychological turn... when the characters finally understand what's up with the curse and how they can stop it, fear and mistrust completely break them. The series shifts from a supernatural mystery to a damn psychological Battle Royale, where everyone starts attacking each other to survive... it's a change of pace that blows your mind, frantic and brilliant. The last two episodes are total madness, one thing after another without a break... I was expecting something intense, but what I saw surpassed everything. And the ending... what an ending, folks! When you finally discover the whole truth, who the culprit is, everything clicks. All those little clues they left for you, those little things that seemed odd, suddenly make sense... it's one of those endings that leaves you satisfied, that wraps everything up in an incredible way. The final twist is genius; honestly, I didn't see it coming at all, and it's the most emotional moment of the entire series. It leaves you with a really awesome feeling.

Look, yes, if you want to be a nitpicker, you can find its little flaws, like why they didn't use Misaki's eye from the beginning or some things about the ending that are a bit wild... but, let's be honest, what horror story doesn't have them? Freddy Krueger didn't have much logic for killing and always came back as if nothing happened... the important thing is that, in its own world, the story works and you get that emotional punch. So, my final verdict. For me, Another is a 9/10.

It's an exceptional psychological and horror thriller, it has an impeccable atmosphere, a plot you don't see coming that keeps you guessing until the very last second, an iconic female character, shocking moments you won't forget, and an ending that leaves you happy and even sentimental... if you're like me, who likes anime but is wary of horror, or if you're looking for something perfect for this Halloween, this is the series. It's only 12 episodes, you can binge it in about 4 hours... short but intense. Ahí la historia da un giro psicológico brutal.. cuando los personajes por fin entienden qué pedo con la maldición y cómo pueden pararla, el miedo y la desconfianza los rompen por completo. La serie pasa de ser un misterio sobrenatural a un pinche Battle Royale psicológico, donde todos se empiezan a atacar entre todos para sobrevivir.. es un cambio de ritmo que te vuela la cabeza, frenético y brillante, los últimos dos capítulos son una locura total, una cosa tras otra sin descanso.. yo me esperaba algo fuerte, pero lo que vi superó todo. Y el final… ¡qué final, señores! Cuando por fin descubres toda la verdad, quién es el culpable, todo hace clic, todas esas pequeñas pistas que te fueron dejando, esas cositas que te parecieron raras, de repente tienen sentido.. es de esos finales que te dejan satisfecho, que cierran todo de una forma increíble. El giro final es una genialidad, yo la neta no me lo vi venir para nada, y es el momento más emocional de toda la serie. Te deja un sabor de boca muy chingón.

A ver, sí, si te pones mamón, le puedes encontrar sus detallitos, como por qué no usaron el ojo de Misaki desde el principio o algunas cosas del final que están medio fumadas.. pero, seamos honestos, ¿qué historia de terror no los tiene? Freddy Krueger tampoco tenía mucha lógica para matar y siempre regresaba como si nada.. lo importante es que, en su propio mundo, la historia funciona y el madrazo emocional te lo llevas. Así que, mi veredicto final. Para mí, Another es un 9/10.

Es un thriller psicológico y de terror excepcional, tiene una atmósfera impecable, una trama que no te esperas y que te tiene adivinando hasta el último segundo, un personaje femenino icónico, momentos de shock que no se te van a olvidar y un final que te deja contento y hasta sentimental.. si son como yo, que les gusta el anime pero le sacan al terror, o si andan buscando algo perfecto para este Halloween, esta es la serie, son solo 12 capítulos, se la echan en unas 4 horas.. corta pero intensa, mi recomendación personal: véanla de noche, con las luces apagadas, si pueden a la medianoche.. si ya la vieron, déjenme en los comentarios qué les pareció.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
