Hello everyone, dear friends of The Anime Realm, I hope you're doing well today. On this occasion, I want to share a new review; I want to talk about an anime I saw a while back. I was thinking about what to bring you, and I feel it's time to talk about Date A Live. I remember perfectly seeing the cover for the first time—a bunch of girls with super cute designs surrounding a guy who looks, well, totally average, you know?—and thinking, "Ugh, I know where this is going"... a typical harem. So I braced myself for the usual clichés, with as open a mind as I could, and dove right in. And, guys, what I found... was... something else. First, let's talk about the plot, because it's absolutely insane! Imagine you're an ordinary high school student, Shido Itsuka... your life is super normal until, out of nowhere, massive spatial explosions called "spatial quakes" start happening, and you discover they're caused by mysterious and mega-powerful beings known as "Spirits."

These Spirits look like goddesses from another world, and the military's solution is, well, you can guess: send in giant mechas and blow them to bits. But then, a super-secret, high-tech organization called Ratatoskr—or Fraxinus, depending—shows up and tells you they have a better plan. And what's their method for preventing the world from exploding? Well, you, Shido, have to make the Spirits fall in love with you and then seal their powers with a kiss... yes, you heard that right, the fate of the world depends on this dude becoming the ultimate heartthrob. Someone once described this series as the "somewhat dysfunctional child" of Neon Genesis Evangelion and The World God Only Knows, and I swear I've never heard a more perfect description. It has all the apocalyptic vibe and mechas of Evangelion, but mixed with the "gotta romance 'em all" dating sim logic of The World God Only Knows. It's a bizarre mix of romantic comedy, sci-fi, fantasy, and harem action that, don't ask me how, somehow works at times.

Hola a todos, queridos amigos de The Anime Realm, espero que hoy estén bien, en esta ocasion les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les quiero hablar de un anime sur vi ya hace un tiempo.. pensaba que traerles, y siento que ya es momento de hablar de Date A Live. Me acuerdo perfecto de ver la portada por primera vez —un montón de chicas con diseños súper bonitos rodeando, a un tipo que se ve, pero normalito, normalito, ¿saben?— y pensar: "Uff, ya sé por dónde va la cosa".. un harem típico, así que me preparé para los clichés de siempre, con la mente lo más abierta que pude y le entré con todo. Y, banda, lo que me encontré... fue... otra cosa, primero, hablemos de la trama, porque es ¡una locura total! Imagínense que son un estudiante de prepa común y corriente, Shido Itsuka.. su vida es súper normal hasta que, de la nada, empiezan a ocurrir unas explosiones masivas en el espacio llamadas "terremotos espaciales", y descubres que las causan unos seres misteriosos y mega poderosos conocidos como "Espíritus".

Estos Espíritus parecen diosas de otro mundo, y la solución del ejército es, pues, ya se imaginan: mandarles unos mechas gigantes y volarlas en pedazos, pero entonces, llega una organización súper secreta y con tecnología de punta llamada Ratatoskr —o Fraxinus, depende— y te dicen que tienen un plan mejor. ¿Y cuál es su método para evitar que el mundo explote? Pues que tú, Shido, tienes que hacer que los Espíritus se enamoren de ti y luego sellar sus poderes con un beso.. si, así como lo oyen, el destino del mundo depende de que este compa se vuelva el galán definitivo. Alguien por ahí describió esta serie como el "hijo medio disfuncional" de Neon Genesis Evangelion y The World God Only Knows, y les juro que nunca he escuchado una descripción más perfecta.. tiene todo el rollo apocalíptico y los mechas de Evangelion, pero mezclado con la lógica de simulador de citas de "hay que ligarse a todas" de The World God Only Knows, es una mezcla rarísima de comedia romántica, ciencia ficción, fantasía y acción harem que, no me pregunten cómo, de alguna manera funciona a veces.

Let's start with the good, because when this series hits the mark, it really knocks it out of the park. First of all, the comedy. It's funny, and I mean it has everything, from a well-written joke to a moment that's so, so absurd you laugh out of disbelief. A lot of the humor comes from poor Shido, who is thrown into these ridiculous romantic situations while the Fraxinus crew spies on him from their ship, feeding him lines as if he were in a real-life dating sim. There's a scene where he has to practice his pick-up techniques with his 29-year-old teacher, and I was dying of laughter. Or the OVA where he's on a date with a girl, Origami, and he tries to ruin it on purpose, acting like a total jerk so she'll hate him, but every single thing he does, somehow, ends up making her fall for him even more... it's pure comedic gold, watching his plans backfire for his total humiliation.

And then there are the characters... well, to be more precise, there are two who carry the entire series on their backs. First, we have Tohka. She's the first Spirit Shido meets, the purple-haired girl on all the posters. And she is... adorable. She has a childlike innocence and a naivety about the world that truly captivates you. She gets into the craziest misunderstandings because she takes everything literally, and her whole journey of discovering human emotions and society is the heart of the series. She's super kind, but can become a fierce protector of her loved ones; she's a bit ditzy, but incredibly determined. Her relationship with Shido feels real and well-built; you believe it, it's sweet, and it gets a lot of laughs. He even gives her the name "Tohka," and that creates a super special bond between them that really stands out, even as the harem grows. In a genre where the main relationship almost always feels forced, theirs is, without a doubt, a huge point in its favor.

Arranquemos por lo bueno, porque cuando esta serie le atina, neta que le atina con todo.. primero que nada, la comedia, es divertida, me refiero a que tiene de todo, eh, desde el chiste que está bien escrito hasta el momento que es tan, pero tan absurdo que te ríes de no poder creerlo, mucho del humor viene del pobre Shido, al que avientan a estas situaciones románticas ridículas mientras el equipo del Fraxinus lo está espiando desde su nave y le sopla los diálogos como si estuviera en un simulador de citas de la vida real. Hay una escena donde tiene que practicar sus técnicas de ligue con su profe de 29 años, y yo me estaba muriendo de la risa.. o el OVA en el que tiene una cita con una chava, Origami, y él intenta arruinarla a propósito, se porta como un patán para que ella lo odie, pero cada cosa que hace, de alguna forma, la termina enamorando todavía más.. es oro puro de comedia, ver cómo sus planes se le voltean en la cara para su humillación total.

Y luego están los personajes.. bueno, para ser más exactos, hay dos que se cargan toda la serie en la espalda, primero, tenemos a Tohka.. es el primer Espíritu que Shido conoce, la chica peli morada que sale en todos los pósters. Y es que es... adorable, tiene una inocencia de niña y una ingenuidad sobre el mundo que de verdad te atrapa.. se mete en los malentendidos más locos porque se toma todo literal, y todo su viaje descubriendo las emociones humanas y la sociedad es el corazón de la serie. Es súper amable, pero se puede poner hecha una fiera para proteger a los suyos; es medio tontita, pero increíblemente decidida, su relación con Shido se siente real y bien construida; te la crees, es tierna y te saca un montón de risas. Él hasta le pone su nombre, "Tohka", y eso crea un lazo súper especial entre ellos que destaca un montón, incluso cuando el harem va creciendo.. en un género donde la relación principal casi siempre se siente forzadísima, la de ellos es, sin duda, un puntazo a favor.

But then... oh, my friends, then comes Kurumi. Look, I'm going to say it plainly: Kurumi Tokisaki is, without a doubt, the best thing about Date A Live, period. She could easily be one of the most fascinating characters I've seen in an anime of this type, end of story. While most of the girls are the archetypes we all know, Kurumi comes in and flips the whole board over. She introduces herself as a transfer student, but from the very first second, you know something is not right with her. She's sadistic, manipulative, and obsessed with chaos and destruction. Unlike the other Spirits who are somewhat confused or on the defensive, Kurumi has goals.

She has a plan. She's the first character in the series who feels like she has her own agenda, a backstory that goes beyond just being another girl for Shido's collection. Her powers are unique and even scary, her personality is a magnetic mix of flirtatiousness and pure evil, and her story is the most interesting part of the entire first season. She isn't waiting to be saved; she is an active, dangerous force, and the series improves a million times whenever she's on screen. Unfortunately, now comes the bad stuff, the part that frankly made me want to bang my head against the wall. Because for every great moment with Kurumi or every hilarious scene with Tohka, there's a giant flaw, one you can't ignore. And the biggest one is character development, or rather, the lack of it for almost everyone else. Let's start with our protagonist, Shido.

His voice actor does a great job, but the character himself is a walking cliché. He's the typical kind-hearted, well-meaning protagonist who gets embarrassed by everything... and that's it. The guy starts the series being a nice guy and ends it being the exact same nice guy. He goes through all these insane events, experiences that should change anyone, and they don't affect his personality one bit. Where's the growth? The change? He's an anchor, a dead point in a sea of characters who could be much more dynamic.

Pero entonces... ah, amigos, entonces llega Kurumi.. miren, se los voy a decir así de claro: Kurumi Tokisaki es, sin lugar a dudas, lo mejor de Date A Live, punto.. fácil podría ser uno de los personajes más fascinantes que he visto en un anime de este estilo, y se acabó, mientras que la mayoría de las chicas son los arquetipos que ya todos nos sabemos, Kurumi llega y patea el tablero por completo. Se presenta como una estudiante de intercambio, pero al segundo uno sabes que algo con ella no está bien, es sádica, es manipuladora y está obsesionada con el caos y la destrucción.. a diferencia de los otros Espíritus que andan medio confundidos o a la defensiva, Kurumi tiene objetivos.

Tiene un plan, es el primer personaje de la serie que se siente que tiene su propia agenda, un trasfondo que va más allá de ser solo otra chica para la colección de Shido.. sus poderes son únicos y hasta dan miedo, su personalidad es una mezcla magnética de coqueteo y maldad pura, y su historia es lo más interesante de toda la primera temporada. Ella no está esperando a que la salven; es una fuerza activa, peligrosa, y la serie mejora un millón de veces cada vez que ella sale a cuadro.. desafortunadamente, ahora sí viene lo malo, lo que de plano me hizo querer darme de topes contra la pared. Porque por cada momento genial con Kurumi o cada escena chistosísima con Tohka, hay un defecto gigante, uno que no puedes ignorar.. y el más grande es el desarrollo de personajes, o mejor dicho, la falta de desarrollo para casi todos los demás, empecemos con nuestro prota, Shido.

Su actor de voz se la rifa, pero el personaje como tal es un cliché con patas.. es el típico prota de buen corazón, bienintencionado, que se apena por todo.. ya, eso es todo. El tipo arranca la serie siendo buena onda y la termina siendo exactamente el mismo tipo buena onda, pasa por todas estas locuras, por experiencias que deberían cambiar a cualquiera, y a él no le hacen ni cosquillas en la personalidad. ¿Dónde está el crecimiento? ¿El cambio? Es un ancla, un punto muerto en un mar de personajes que podrían ser mucho más dinámicos.

And speaking of wasted potential, let's talk about Origami. She's part of the military unit that hunts Spirits and, how convenient, she's also in Shido's class. The series gives her a super tragic past: her parents were killed by a Spirit, which gives her a very deep motivation to fight. Sounds great, right? A complex rival, with a personal stake in this whole mess! The problem is... the series doesn't seem to give a damn about it. Her entire character is immediately reduced to being a weird, expressionless stalker who hits on Shido in the most awkward ways possible. Her potential for an incredible dramatic arc is completely wasted on cheap and irrelevant fan service.

The series mentions her trauma and then five minutes later completely forgets about it so she can be in another sexy scene. It's a criminal waste of what could have been an amazing character. This brings me to another problem: the fan service sometimes gets out of hand, seriously. Look, I get it, it's a harem anime, but there are moments when the plot grinds to a halt just so we can stare at the girls' bodies. It's very distracting and feels like pure filler. There are also plot points that have no consequences. After everything happens, everyone goes back to their lives as if nothing happened. Kotori is still the commander of the Fraxinus; the fact that she's a Spirit changes absolutely NOTHING about her role or the group's dynamic. No one says, "Hey, maybe our commander shouldn't also be one of the apocalyptic beings we're trying to control?" Nope. They mention it, resolve it in a couple of episodes, and then sweep it under the rug so forcefully you'd swear it never happened.

Y hablando de potencial tirado a la basura, hablemos de Origami, ella es parte de la unidad militar que caza Espíritus y, qué conveniente, también va en el salón de Shido, la serie le da un pasado súper trágico: sus papás murieron por culpa de un Espíritu, lo que le da una motivación bien profunda para pelear. Suena genial, ¿no? ¡Una rival compleja, con un interés personal en todo el desmadre! El problema es que... a la serie parece que eso le vale verga, todo su personaje lo reducen de inmediato a ser una acosadora medio rara y sin expresión que se le insinúa a Shido de las formas más incómodas posibles, su potencial para tener un arco dramático increíble lo desperdician por completo para meter fan service barato y que ni al caso.

La serie te menciona su trauma y cinco minutos después se olvida por completo para que ella pueda estar en otra escena sexy.. es un desperdicio criminal de lo que pudo ser un personajazo, y esto me lleva a otro problema: el fan service a veces se les va de las manos, pero en serio. A ver, yo entiendo, es un anime harem, pero hay momentos en los que la trama se para en seco nomás para que veamos los cuerpos de las chicas.. te distrae un montón y se siente como puro relleno.. también hay scks que no tiene consecuencias.. después de que todo pasa, todos vuelven a sus vidas como si nada. Kotori sigue siendo la comandante del Fraxinus; que sea un Espíritu no cambia absolutamente NADA sobre su papel o la dinámica del grupo.. nadie dice: "Oigan, ¿chance nuestra comandante no debería ser también uno de los seres apocalípticos que intentamos controlar?". No. Lo mencionan, lo resuelven en un par de episodios y luego lo meten debajo de la alfombra con tantas ganas que jurarías que nunca pasó.

Let's talk about the technical aspects for a second. The animation is perfectly... acceptable. It's functional. It won't leave you speechless like a Ufotable production, but it's not terrible either. It just gets the job done. Where it really shines, however, is in the action scenes. When the Spirits unleash their power and the military mechas get involved, the fights are dynamic, fluid, and very entertaining to watch. The direction is surprisingly solid, and you can tell a lot of effort was put into making those moments stand out. I have to give a special shout-out to the opening theme. It's an absolute banger: catchy, energetic, and paired with a fantastic animated sequence that often sets up a great little joke right at the beginning of the episode.

The rest of the soundtrack is pretty standard for an anime, but that opening is top-tier. So, what's my verdict on Date A Live? It's a series I have a love-hate relationship with. It's a mess, but it's a fun mess. It's frustratingly generic in some areas and brilliantly unique in others. It has one of the most forgettable male protagonists I've seen in a long time, but it also has Tohka and the absolute force of nature that is Kurumi. It wastes incredible potential on characters like Origami but then delivers scenes of pure comedic brilliance that had me laughing out loud.

In the end, I think this is a series you'll enjoy if you can turn off the critical part of your brain and just embrace the absurdity. If you're looking for a deep, complex sci-fi story with rich mythology and consistent character development, you should run in the opposite direction. There's none of that here. But if you're in the mood for a wild, genre-bending ride with great comedy, some spectacular action, and a couple of truly lovable characters holding it all together, then give it a shot. I'd probably give it a solid 6.5/10. It's too flawed to be called "great," but it's too entertaining to be called "bad." It exists in that strange middle ground of pure, unadulterated, sometimes brilliant, often stupid, anime fun. It's the kind of show you watch when you just want to see a guy try to save the world by taking a time-manipulating goth-loli to an amusement park. And well, I'll see you in the next reviews! Hablemos de los aspectos técnicos por un segundo. La animación es perfectamente.. aceptable, es funcional.. no te va a dejar boquiabierto como una producción de Ufotable, pero tampoco es terrible.. simplemente cumple su función, donde realmente brilla, sin embargo, es en las escenas de acción, cuando los Espíritus se desatan y los mechas militares se involucran, las peleas son dinámicas, fluidas y muy entretenidas de ver. La dirección es sorprendentemente sólida, y se nota que se ha puesto mucho esfuerzo en hacer que esos momentos destaquen.. tengo que dar un reconocimiento especial al tema de apertura, es un temazo absoluto: pegadizo, enérgico y emparejado con una fantástica secuencia animada que a menudo prepara un pequeño chiste genial justo al principio del episodio.

El resto de la banda sonora es bastante estándar para un anime, pero esa apertura es de primer nivel.. entonces, ¿cuál es mi veredicto sobre Date A Live? Es una serie con la que tengo una relación de amor-odio.. es un desastre, pero es un desastre divertido, es frustrantemente genérica en algunas áreas y brillantemente única en otras.. tiene uno de los protagonistas masculinos más olvidables que he visto en mucho tiempo, pero también tiene a Tohka y la fuerza absoluta de la naturaleza que es Kurumi, desperdicia un potencial increíble en personajes como Origami, pero luego ofrece escenas de pura brillantez cómica que me hicieron reír a carcajadas.

Al final, creo que esta es una serie que disfrutarás si puedes apagar la parte crítica de tu cerebro y simplemente abrazar lo absurdo.. si buscas una historia de ciencia ficción profunda y compleja con una rica mitología y un desarrollo de personajes consistente, deberías correr en la dirección opuesta, no hay de eso aquí, pero si estás de humor para un viaje salvaje y que mezcla géneros, con gran comedia, algo de acción espectacular y un par de personajes verdaderamente adorables que mantienen todo unido, entonces dale una oportunidad. Probablemente le daría un sólido 6.5/10.. es demasiado defectuosa para ser llamada "genial", pero es demasiado entretenida para ser llamada "mala".. existe en ese extraño término medio de pura, sin adulterar, a veces brillante, a menudo estúpida, diversión de anime, es el tipo de serie que ves cuando solo quieres ver a un chico intentar salvar el mundo llevando a una manipuladora del tiempo gótica-loli a un parque de atracciones.. y bueno, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas!
