Hello everyone! To my fellow Otakus, I hope you're doing super well today. On this occasion, I want to share my thoughts on an interesting series, but I have to tell you, at first, I was terrified of what Netflix might do, and well... today I'm talking about Pacific Rim: The Black. I mean, for me, Del Toro's original 2013 film is sacred, it's untouchable... it's the perfect mix of sci-fi, brawls between monsters and giant robots, and most importantly, it has a huge heart. So getting into this new anime felt like taking a big risk... but man, am I glad I did! First, let's get this out of the way, because I know it's the first thing you'll notice: the animation. It's by Polygon Pictures, the same studio that did Netflix's Godzilla trilogy, and if you've seen their work, you know what it's about... it's this 3D, this CG that sometimes feels a bit... stiff, right? And yes, when I started the first episode, my reaction was, "Ugh, it's one of those animations."

I swear I was worried it would completely pull me out of the story, but let me tell you something: give it a chance. Stick with it for about twenty minutes. What am I saying, twenty minutes! Just get through the opening sequence! The mayhem at the beginning is so intense and focuses so much on the characters that you almost instantly forget that prejudice... at that point, the style starts to work in its favor... it immerses you completely in this incredible post-apocalyptic world: a desolate, sun-scorched Australian desert that feels utterly abandoned. And the way the vibrant colors of the kaijus pop against the gray of the destroyed cities... no, no, it's insane. In the end, you find yourself thinking, "Okay, yeah, this is badass," and you're all in.

Amigos Otakus, espero que estén super bien hoy, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir mis opiniones sobre una serie interesante, pero debo decirles que al principio estaba muy asustado con lo que podía hacer Netflix, y bueno.. hoy les hablaré de Pacific Rim: The Black.. o sea, para mí la película original de Del Toro, la de 2013, es sagrada, es intocable.. es la mezcla perfecta de ciencia ficción, madrazos entre monstruos y robots gigantes y, lo más importante, tiene un corazón enorme. Así que entrarle a este nuevo anime se sentía como jugársela.. pero, ¡qué bueno que me animé! Primero, vamos a sacar esto del camino, porque sé que es lo primero que van a notar: la animación, es de Polygon Pictures, los mismos que hicieron la trilogía de Godzilla de Netflix, y si ya han visto algo de ellos, saben de qué va la cosa.. es este 3D, este CG que a veces se siente medio... tieso, ¿no? Y sí, cuando arranqué el primer capítulo, mi reacción fue de "Uff, es una de esas animaciones".. les juro que me preocupaba que eso me fuera a sacar por completo de la historia, pero, les digo algo: denle chance. Aguanten unos veinte minutos. ¡Qué veinte minutos! ¡Aguanten la secuencia de inicio!

El desmadre del principio es tan intenso y se enfoca tanto en los personajes, que ese prejuicio se te olvida casi al instante.. ahí, el estilo empieza a jugar a su favor.. te mete de lleno en este mundo postapocalíptico que es increíble: un desierto australiano desolado, quemado por el sol, que se siente totalmente abandonado. Y la forma en que los colores vibrantes de los kaijus revientan contra el gris de las ciudades destruidas... no, no, es una locura, al final, terminas pensando: "Ok, sí, esto está bien chingón", y ya estás adentro.

So, what's it about? Heads up, the series gives it a really clever twist. It's no longer about the mega military force fighting a war, but about what was left in the aftermath... of the chaos. The story follows two siblings, Taylor and Hayley Travis, who were stranded in a community in the middle of nowhere when their parents, who were Jaeger pilots, went out on a mission and... well, they never came back. They've been waiting for five LONG years. And one day, out of desperation, they stumble upon a training Jaeger that was just lying around... of course, turning that thing on is like setting off a giant flare to call every kaiju in the area, which causes chaos that forces them to flee and enter "The Black," a huge, super dangerous, and lawless territory. Their journey isn't to save the world, not at all... it's a deeply personal quest to find their parents or, at the very least, a safe place to live.

And here, folks, is where the series really shines... it's surprisingly dark and revolves entirely around its characters. I was honestly expecting something a bit more for kids, but boy, was I wrong! This series doesn't pull any punches in showing you how screwed up its world is. There's real danger, real consequences, and they don't hold back one bit in showing you violence or even death. You never feel like our heroes are winning; they are constantly, and barely, trying to survive... this creates a constant tension that hooks you and makes you hit "next episode" without hesitation. You really grow to care for Taylor and Hayley, and their development is very well done... you connect with their motivations and feel the weight of the whole mess that's building up.

Bueno, ¿y de qué va la cosa? Ojo, que la serie le da un giro bien inteligente, ya no se trata de la mega fuerza militar peleando una guerra, sino de lo que quedó después.. del desmadre, la historia va de dos hermanos, Taylor y Hayley Travis, que se quedaron botados en una comunidad en medio de la nada cuando sus papás, que eran pilotos de Jaeger, salieron a una misión y… pues, nunca volvieron, llevan cinco LARGOS años esperando. Y un día, ya en la desesperada, se topan con un Jaeger de entrenamiento que estaba ahí arrumbado.. claro, prender esa cosa es como lanzar una bengala gigante para llamar a todos los kaijus de la zona, lo que provoca un caos que los obliga a huir y meterse a "La Zona Negra", un terreno enorme, súper peligroso y sin ley, su viaje no es para salvar el mundo, para nada.. es una búsqueda súper personal para encontrar a sus papás o, por lo menos, un lugar seguro donde vivir.

Y aquí, gente, es donde la serie se la rifa.. es sorprendentemente oscura y todo gira alrededor de sus personajes.. la verdad yo esperaba algo un poquito más para niños, pero ¡qué equivocado estaba! A esta serie no le tiembla la mano para mostrarte lo jodido que está su mundo, hay peligro real, consecuencias reales, y no se cortan ni un pelo en mostrarte violencia o incluso la muerte. Nunca sientes que nuestros héroes estén ganando; están todo el tiempo, y a duras penas, tratando de sobrevivir.. esto crea una tensión constante que te atrapa y te hace darle al siguiente episodio sin dudarlo, de verdad te encariñas con Taylor y Hayley, y su desarrollo está muy bueno.. conectas con lo que los mueve y sientes el peso que tienen en todo el lío que se va armando.

But hey, let's talk about the real MVP, the one I did NOT see coming AT ALL: the Jaeger's artificial intelligence, named Loa. Look, in the movies, the Jaegers are incredible war machines, but they're just that—machines. But here, Loa gives her Jaeger, the Atlas Destroyer, a personality... she's the one who brings the humor, a super dry, kind of sharp wit that is fantastic. And what's more, she's FULL of fan service, dropping facts and references that will make any Pacific Rim fan smile. She manages to make the Jaeger feel like a third protagonist, a protector, a buddy. You end up caring about this hunk of metal because she gives it a soul... it's a decision by the writers that, wow, is super smart and works spectacularly. For those of us who love to dive deep into the lore, who love geeking out about how this universe works, they do something BRILLIANT with the Drift. You know, that neural connection that allows two pilots to merge to control a Jaeger... well, the series explores this concept in a way the movies never dared to touch. They introduce the idea that with the Drift, a pilot can "download," so to speak, the skills and memories of other pilots they connect with. Imagine the potential of that, it's insane!

A pilot with a strong enough mind could connect with a bunch of pro pilots and absorb their fighting techniques, their knowledge of weapons... everything! It's an epic, brutal expansion of the lore! And it also gives you a super badass and logical answer to something fans have always wondered: how could someone like Raleigh or Pentecost pilot a Jaeger alone? I'm not going to spoil the answer for you, but believe me, the way they resolve it is genius. Now, the series isn't perfect, okay? If I have to point out a "but," it would be the development of the secondary characters... because look, Taylor and Hayley are super well-constructed, but the other characters that appear feel a bit... cardboard, flat. You're left wanting to know more about them, their past, why they do what they do, but the series, at least in this first season, just gives you glimpses. It's kind of a wasted opportunity, honestly, especially since the world they created is so interesting.

Pero ojo, vamos a hablar de la verdadera MVP, de la que no me esperaba PARA NADA: la inteligencia artificial del Jaeger, que se llama Lola.. a ver, en las pelis, los Jaegers son unas máquinas de guerra increíbles, pero son solo eso, máquinas, pero aquí, Lola le da una personalidad a su Jaeger, al Atlas Destroyer.. es la que pone el humor, uno súper seco, medio ácido, que está genial. Y además, está LLENA de fan service, tirando datos y referencias que a cualquier fan de Pacific Rim le van a sacar una sonrisa, logra que el Jaeger se sienta como un tercer protagonista, un protector, un compa. Terminas preocupándote por este pedazo de fierro porque ella le da un alma.. es una decisión de los guionistas que, ¡uf!, es súper inteligente y funciona de una manera espectacular.. para los que nos gusta clavarnos en el lore, los que amamos frikear con cómo funciona este universo, hacen algo BRILLANTE con el Vínculo, con el Drift. Ya saben, esta conexión neuronal que permite que dos pilotos se fusionen para manejar un Jaeger.. bueno, pues la serie explota este concepto de una forma que las películas ni se atrevieron a tocar. Meten la idea de que con el Vínculo, un piloto puede "descargar", por así decirlo, las habilidades y los recuerdos de otros pilotos con los que se conecta. ¡Imagínense el potencial de eso, es una locura!

Un piloto con la mente lo suficientemente fuerte podría conectarse con un montón de pilotos pro y absorber sus técnicas de pelea, su conocimiento de armas... ¡todo! Es una expansión del lore épica, ¡brutal! Y además, te da una respuesta súper chingona y lógica a algo que los fans siempre nos preguntamos: ¿cómo es que alguien como Raleigh o Pentecost pudo pilotear un Jaeger solo? No les voy a spoilear la respuesta, pero créanme, la forma en que lo resuelven es una genialidad.. ahora, la serie no es perfecta, ¿eh? Si le tengo que poner un "pero", sería el desarrollo de los personajes secundarios.. porque a ver, Taylor y Hayley están súper bien construidos, pero los otros personajes que van apareciendo se sienten medio... de cartón, planos. Te quedas con ganas de saber más de ellos, de su pasado, de por qué hacen lo que hacen, pero la serie, al menos en esta primera temporada, nomás te da pinceladas, es una oportunidad medio desperdiciada, la neta, sobre todo porque el mundo que crearon está bien interesante.

And then we have the main human villain, a guy named Shane... in something I read, they nicknamed him "generic villain number 73," and... honestly, they're not far off. Most of the time, he's just a despicable guy for the sake of it... but hey, he serves his purpose, you know? He brings a different kind of threat to the table, the kind that reminds you that even in a world invaded by monsters, humans can be the worst. What gives him a bit of flavor is how he manipulates people by twisting the Drift technology for his own benefit, altering memories and controlling minds. It's a bone-chilling idea that adds a more interesting layer to his character. The monster designs, by the way, phew, are insane. You can feel Del Toro's touch there; the kaijus are new, different, and look brutal.

There's this detail with their bioluminescence, that glow, which looks spectacular in the dark, destroyed cities. Okay, yes, it loses a bit of logic when you see them shining like that in the middle of the desert in broad daylight, but who cares! They look so badass and beautiful at the same time that you forgive it. Folks, Pacific Rim: The Black is a fantastic and super worthy addition to the franchise. They knocked it out of the park because they took everything we love—the giant robots, the monsters, the music (yes, they drop the iconic theme at just the right moments, and it's brilliant!)—and anchored it in a survival story that is raw, personal, and surprisingly emotional. This is a series with a huge heart beating inside that metal chest. I give it a solid 9/10. I'm docking it a point for the underdeveloped secondary characters and the sometimes-flat human villain... but it earns the 9 for everything else: the fantastic development of the protagonists, the brilliance of Loa, the brilliant way they explore the Drift, the intense and dark tone, and the guts they had to build upon such a beloved world and truly make it feel bigger and richer. Seriously, if you're a fan of the original movie or just want a good sci-fi anime with a story that has weight and emotional heft, you have to watch it... and well... that's it for today's review! Y luego tenemos al villano humano principal, un tipo que se llama Shane.. por ahí en un texto que leí, le pusieron el apodo de "villano genérico número 73", y… la verdad es que no andan tan perdidos, la mayor parte del tiempo, es un tipo despreciable nomás porque sí.. pero bueno, cumple su función, ¿saben? Pone sobre la mesa un tipo de amenaza diferente, de esas que te recuerdan que, incluso en un mundo invadido por monstruos, los humanos pueden ser los peores, lo que le da un poquito de sabor es cómo manipula a la gente retorciendo la tecnología del Vínculo para su propio beneficio, alterando recuerdos y controlando mentes. Es una idea que te pone los pelos de punta y que le da una capa más interesante a su personaje.. los diseños de los monstruos, por cierto, ¡uf!, son una locura. Se siente la mano de Del Toro ahí; los kaijus son nuevos, diferentes y se ven brutales.. hay un detalle con esa bioluminiscencia que tienen, ese brillo, que se ve espectacular en las ciudades oscuras y destruidas.

A ver, sí, pierde un poco de lógica cuando los ves brillar así en medio del desierto a pleno sol, pero, ¡qué más da! Se ven tan cabrones y tan hermosos al mismo tiempo que se lo perdonas.. gente, Pacific Rim: The Black es una adición fantástica y súper digna a la franquicia. Se la rifaron porque agarraron todo lo que amamos —los robots gigantes, los monstruos, la música (¡sí, meten el tema icónico en los momentos justos y es una genialidad!)— y lo anclaron en una historia de supervivencia que es cruda, personal y sorprendentemente emotiva. Es una serie con un corazón enorme latiendo adentro de ese pecho de metal.. yo le doy un sólido 9/10. Le bajo un puntito por los personajes secundarios que se quedaron cortos y el villano humano que a veces es muy plano.. pero el 9 se lo lleva por todo lo demás: el desarrollo de los protas que es fantástico, la genialidad de Lola, la forma tan brillante en que exploran el Vínculo, el tono intenso y oscuro, y los huevos que tuvieron para construir sobre un mundo tan querido y de verdad hacerlo sentir más grande y más rico.. en serio, si son fans de la película original o simplemente quieren un buen anime de ciencia ficción, con una historia que pese y tenga carga emocional, tienen que verlo.. y bueno.. hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
