Hello everyone, fellow fans of good stories, I hope you're doing great today. On this occasion, I want to share a new review with you, this time about the anime SAND LAND. I just marathoned everything that's been released... it's one of those series you go into with a certain idea, right? And then, BAM! It grabs that idea and throws it out the window, but in the best way possible. First, we have to touch on the topic... the topic that gives this whole thing a HUGE emotional weight... which is that, for better or for worse, this is the last gift the master Akira Toriyama left us. Just think about it, this is the genius who gave us Dragon Ball, the guy who practically raised millions and millions of us around the world, and now it turns out that SAND LAND: THE SERIES is the last animated project of his we'll ever see, and its protagonist, Beelzebub, is the character from his last known drawing. It's... it's heavy.
The original manga came out way back in 2000, a little one-volume gem, but this new wave... it's on another level. It's like a remake of the movie... but GET THIS! with a completely new story arc written by Toriyama himself. And as if that weren't enough, the video game, the action RPG, is already out. All of this feels less like a normal release and more like a celebration, you know? Like a final victory lap, a grand farewell. For that reason alone, it already feels like something you HAVE to watch. So, I'll confess, I was a bit skeptical at first. With the game coming out so close to the anime, I had that little fear, that little voice in my head saying: "What if this is just a super expensive 13-episode commercial to sell me the game?". I was already bracing myself for disappointment, for it to be visually cool, but empty on the inside.
Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que estén super bien el día de hoy, en esta ocasión, quiero compartir con ustedes una nueva reseña, en esta ocasión les voy a hablar del anime SAND LAND.. me acabo de aventar un maratón de todo lo que ha salido.. es de esas series a las que llegas con una idea, ¿no? Y de repente, ¡PUM! Te la agarra y la manda a volar por la ventana, pero de la mejor forma posible.. primero, hay que tocar el tema.. el tema que le da un peso emocional GIGANTE a todo esto.. es que, para bien o para mal, este es el último regalo que nos dejó el maestro Akira Toriyama. Pónganse a pensar, o sea, es el genio que nos dio Dragon Ball, el tipo que prácticamente nos crió a millones y millones en todo el mundo, h ahora resulta que SAND LAND: THE SERIES es su último proyecto animado que vamos a ver, y que su prota, Beelzebub, es el personaje de su último dibujo conocido.
Es... es fuerte.. el manga original salió por allá en el 2000, era una joyita de un solo tomo, pero esta nueva ola… es otro nivel, es como un remake de la peli.. pero ¡OJO! con un arco argumental totalmente nuevo escrito por el mismísimo Toriyama. Y como si fuera poco, el videojuego, el RPG de acción, ya salió, todo esto se siente menos como un lanzamiento normal y más como una celebración, ¿saben? Como una última vuelta de honor, una despedida a lo grande.. solo por eso, ya se siente como algo que SÍ o SÍ hay que ver. Así que, se los confieso, yo al principio estaba un poco escéptico, con el juego saliendo tan pegadito al anime, tenía ese miedito, esa vocecita que me decía: "¿Y si esto es nomás un comercial carísimo de 13 episodios para venderme el juego?". Ya me estaba preparando para la decepción, para que fuera algo visualmente chido, pero vacío por dentro.
How wrong I was! And honestly, I'm so glad I was mistaken. Look, the story, at first glance, is super simple. We're in a post-apocalyptic world, a GIANT desert called Sand Land, where water is the most valuable thing you can imagine. It's controlled by a super greedy king who sells it at sky-high prices, so everyone, both humans and demons, is having a terrible time. In the midst of all this chaos, Rao appears, a veteran sheriff with a past that weighs heavily on him, and who believes in the legend of a hidden "Legendary Spring." The guy knows he can't pull it off alone, so he does the unthinkable: he goes and asks the demons for help. That's how he finds Beelzebub, the prince of demons himself, and his sidekick, Thief, a hilarious old-timer.
And so, this unlikely trio sets off on an adventure in a stolen tank to find water and save everyone. It's the classic adventure premise, yes, but the magic here isn't in what happens, but in who it happens to. Toriyama's greatest genius was always, always his characters, and SAND LAND is a masterclass in this. I swear you'll fall in love with this little group almost instantly. Beelzebub is a gem. I mean, he's the Prince of Demons, but his "worst" sin is going to bed without brushing his teeth or stealing a video game from another demon. He's a mischievous and super strong kid but with a heart of gold, and his charisma... phew, it jumps off the screen. You're on his side from the first second. Then there's Rao, the seasoned soldier. The way they tell you his backstory, which is loaded with guilt and tragedy, is brutal. They don't spend two or three episodes on it, no way! In a couple of minutes, they unleash all his pain, and it hits you hard, but without slowing down the adventure at all. The dynamic between the "bad" demon prince who's a sweetheart deep down, and the "good" human hero who carries all the mistakes of his past is, simply... pure gold. It's pure, unfiltered Toriyama-brand fun.
Qué equivocado que estaba! Y la verdad, qué bueno que me equivoqué, miren, la historia, a simple vista, es súper sencilla.. estamos en un mundo postapocalíptico, un desierto GIGANTE llamado Sand Land, donde el agua es lo más valioso que se puedan imaginar, la controla un rey súper avaro que la vende por las nubes, así que todo el mundo, tanto humanos como demonios, la está pasando fatal. En medio de todo este desmadre aparece Rao, un sheriff ya veterano con un pasado que le pesa un montón, y que cree en esa leyenda de una "Fuente Legendaria" escondida por ahí.. el tipo sabe que solo no la va a armar, así que hace lo impensable: va y les pide ayuda a los demonios.. así es como da con Beelzebub, el mismísimo príncipe de los demonios, y con su compinche, Thief, un viejito que es un cague de risa.
Y pues nada, este trío que no tiene nada que ver se lanza a la aventura en un tanque robado para encontrar agua y salvar a todos, es la premisa clásica de una aventura, sí, pero la magia aquí no está en el qué pasa, sino en el quiénes.. el mayor genio de Toriyama siempre, pero siempre, fueron sus personajes, y SAND LAND es una cátedra de esto. Se los juro que se van a enamorar de este grupito casi al instante, Beelzebub es una joya.. o sea, es el Príncipe de los Demonios, pero su "peor" pecado es irse a dormir sin lavarse los dientes o robarle un videojuego a otro demonio. Es un niño travieso y mega fuerte pero con un corazón de oro, y su carisma… uf, se sale de la pantalla.. estás de su lado desde el segundo uno, luego está Rao, el soldado curtido. La forma en que te cuentan su pasado, que está cargadísimo de culpa y tragedia, es brutal.. no se tiran dos o tres capítulos para contártelo, ¡qué va! En un par de minutos te sueltan todo su dolor, te pega durísimo, pero sin frenar la aventura para nada, la dinámica entre el príncipe demonio "malo" que en el fondo es un pan de Dios, y el héroe humano "bueno" que carga con todos los errores de su pasado es, simplemente… oro puro.. es pura diversión marca Toriyama, sin ningún filtro.
And the animation! I was afraid it would be something rushed and cheap, but NOPE! They totally shut me up. The series mixes CGI with traditional 2D animation, and I know that sets off alarms for many fans, but here? It's really good! It's one of the best blends I've ever seen. The movements are super fluid, the tank fights feel weighty, with real impact... you can feel the hits, you know? And the character designs are pure Toriyama, 100% faithful to his iconic style. You can see his trademark; I mean, you see a bit of Bulma or Android 18 in the girls, Beelzebub's hair has that classic Saiyan tuft... but everything feels new, it feels vibrant. Visually, it's a feast, a surprise I didn't expect and absolutely loved. OK, but as much as I'm showering it with praise, I promised to be 100% honest with you, and the series isn't perfect. And this is where things get... complicated.
The first half of the series adapts the original manga, and it's perfect: it gets straight to the point, it's super well-told, a gem. The second half, which kicks off around episode seven, is the new story written by Toriyama. And while it's incredible to have more material from the master, this is where some... let's say, GIGANTIC plot holes start to appear. I'll try not to spoil much, but I have to talk about this. In the new arc, they introduce a new kingdom, Forest Land, which, as the name suggests, is a lush forest with plenty of water. And they also introduce a key new character, Ann. It turns out, this kingdom had a massive war with Sand Land a long time ago. So... wait, how is it possible that Rao, who was a legendary general, had NO IDEA that a GIANT, water-filled kingdom existed right next door!? Or that NOBODY, absolutely NOBODY in Sand Land seems to remember? This completely breaks the logic of the first arc, which had made it crystal clear that the only water they knew of was the king's.
¡Y la animación! yo tenía miedo de que fuera una cosa hecha al aventón, barata, pero ¡NAH! Me callaron la boca bien.. la serie mezcla CGI con animación 2D de toda la vida, y yo sé que eso a muchos fans les prende las alarmas, pero aquí? ¡Es muy buena! Es de las mejores mezclas que he visto en mi vida, los movimientos son súper fluidos, las peleas con el tanque se sienten con un peso, con un impacto... sientes el trancazo, ¿saben? Y los diseños de personajes son puro Toriyama, 100% fiel a su estilo icónico.. se nota su sello, o sea, le ves un aire a Bulma o a la Androide 18 en las chicas, el pelo de Beelzebub tiene ese mechón clásico de Saiyan... pero todo se siente nuevo, se siente vibrante. Visualmente es un manjar, una sorpresa que no me esperaba y que me encantó, OK, pero por más que le esté echando flores, les prometí ser 100% honesto con ustedes, y la serie no es perfecta.. y aquí es donde la cosa se pone... complicada.
La primera mitad de la serie adapta el manga original, y es perfecta: va al grano, está súper bien contada, una joya, la segunda mitad, que arranca como por el episodio siete, es la historia nueva que escribió Toriyama. Y aunque está increíble tener más material del maestro, aquí es donde empiezan a salir unos... digamos, agujeros en la trama GIGANTESCOS.. voy a tratar de no spoilearles mucho, pero tengo que hablar de esto.. en el nuevo arco nos meten un reino nuevo, Forest Land, que, pues como el nombre lo dice, es un bosque lleno de verde y con agua de sobra. Y también nos meten a un personaje nuevo clave, que es Ann.. resulta, que este reino tuvo una guerra masiva con Sand Land hace tiempo. Entonces... a ver, ¿¡cómo es posible que Rao, que era un general legendario, no tuviera NI IDEA de que existía un reino GIGANTE y lleno de agua justo al lado!? ¿O que NADIE, pero NADIE en Sand Land parece acordarse? Esto te rompe por completo la lógica del primer arco, que te había dejado clarísimo que la única agua que conocían era la del rey.
Then, Ann's connection to Beelzebub feels a bit forced, like it was shoved in, and it leaves you with more questions than answers. I mean, why was none of this ever mentioned? Why didn't Beelzebub's family, who knew the whole story, say a peep when they saw that everyone, including the demons, was dying of thirst? It feels like they took the new story and just taped it onto the original one, without bothering to make it fit properly. There's even something from the first arc that's never explained. Those details are jarring and kind of interrupt your enjoyment for a moment. So, with all that said, does it ruin the series? Not at all. Is it worth watching? Without a doubt, YES. The first episode is a bit slow, mainly because the best part of the series is the characters, and you haven't grown attached to them yet, but from the second one on, it's great! The journey flies by, the action is super fun, the humor hits the mark, and the heart it has is huge.
Even with the plot holes in the second half, the main adventure and the charisma of the characters are so strong that they carry the whole thing and pull the series through. If you ask me, I give SAND LAND: THE SERIES a solid 8/10. It's an incredibly fun adventure, with beautiful animation and characters that get into your heart like few others. The only thing that deducts points are those plot inconsistencies in the second half. But it's a super entertaining time, full of action and good vibes and, above all, it's like the final bow, the last farewell from a true legend. If you're a Toriyama fan, it's a must-watch, and if you're just looking for a good action-adventure anime, I highly recommend it. And well, that's it for today's review, folks. Take care! Byebye!
Luego, lo de la conexión de Ann con Beelzebub se siente medio forzado, como metido a la fuerza, y te deja con más preguntas que respuestas.. a ver, ¿por qué nunca se mencionó nada de esto? ¿Por qué la familia de Beelzebub, que sabía todo el chisme, no dijo ni pío cuando veían que todos, hasta los demonios, se estaban muriendo de sed? Se siente como si hubieran agarrado la historia nueva y la hubieran pegado con cinta a la original, sin molestarse en que encajara bien.. hasta hay una cosa del primer arco que nunca explican Esos detalles te sacan de onda y como que te cortan el disfrute por un momento.. entonces, con todo esto que les digo, ¿se arruina la serie? Para nada. ¿Vale la pena verla? Sin la menor duda, SÍ.. el primer episodio es un poco lento, más que nada porque lo mejor de la serie son los personajes y pues todavía no les agarras cariño, pero del segundo para adelante, ¡es genial! El viaje se te pasa volando, la acción es súper divertida, el humor da justo en el clavo y el corazón que tiene es gigante.
Incluso con los hoyos en el guion de la segunda mitad, la aventura principal y el carisma de los personajes son tan grandes que cargan con todo y sacan la serie adelante. Si me preguntan a mí, yo le doy a SAND LAND: THE SERIES un sólido 8/10. Es una aventura increíblemente divertida, con una animación preciosa y unos personajes que se te meten en el corazón como pocos.. lo único que le quita puntos son esas inconsistencias en la trama de la segunda mitad.. pero es un rato súper entretenido, lleno de acción y buena onda y, sobre todo, es como la última reverencia, el último adiós de una verdadera leyenda, si eres fan de Toriyama, la tienes que ver sí o sí, y si solo buscas un buen anime de acción y aventura, te lo recomiendo.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy amigos, cuidense mucho!
