Hello everyone, my fellow lovers of good stories, I hope you're doing great today. On this occasion, I want to share a new review with my personal opinions on an anime that has gone very unnoticed. I'll be talking about a historical fantasy, and I'll tell you a bit about my experience with Yatagarasu: The Crow Does Not Choose Its Master. I had a mix of feelings, but let me tell you, after binge-watching all 20 episodes, wow, zero complaints. Not at all... this series could be last year's hidden gem, and it's truly a sin that not everyone is talking about it. So, what's Yatagarasu about? At first glance, you probably think, "Ah, another Japanese historical fantasy"... you're not wrong, but you're not exactly right either. This isn't just people in elegant robes and palace gossip; the whole vibe of the story is based on something much more unique. Imagine a fantasy kingdom called Yamamauchi, a separate world with four houses ruling the North, South, East, and West, all revolving around a giant mountain where the palace is located.

But here comes the good part: the inhabitants of this world aren't human... they are the Yatagarasu, creatures from Japanese folklore who are basically three-legged divine crows... that can transform into people. That simple little detail, my friends, gives an incredible twist to everything. It's no longer just a political story; it's a story about a society of beings who are superhuman in their ambitions and grudges, but who, deep down, are something completely different.

Hola a todos, amigos amantes de las buenas historias, espero que esten super bien hoy, en esta ocasion, les quiero compartir una nueva reseña con mis opiniones personales, de un anime que ha pasado muy desapercibido, les hablaré de una fantasía histórica, les contaré un poco sobre mi experiencia con Yatagarasu: El cuervo no elige a su amo, sentí como una mezcla de sentimientos, pero déjenme decirles, después de clavarme los 20 capítulos, ¡uff!, cero quejas. Para nada.. esta serie podría ser la joyita escondida del año pasado, y de verdad es un pecado que no esté todo el mundo hablando de ella.. entonces, ¿de qué va Yatagarasu? A primera vista, seguro piensas: "Ah, otra de fantasía histórica japonesa".. no te equivocas… pero tampoco le atinas, esto no es nomás gente con túnicas elegantes y chismes de palacio, toda la onda de la historia se basa en algo mucho más único.. imagínense un reino de fantasía llamado Yamamauchi, un mundo aparte con cuatro casas que gobiernan el Norte, Sur, Este y Oeste, y todo gira alrededor de una montaña gigante donde está el palacio.

Pero lo bueno viene ahora: los habitantes de este mundo no son humanos.. son los Yatagarasu, unas criaturas del folklore japonés que son básicamente cuervos divinos de tres patas… que se pueden transformar en gente, ese simple detallito, amigos, le da un giro increíble a todo.. ya no es solo una historia de política; es una historia sobre una sociedad de seres que son súper humanos en sus ambiciones y rencores, pero que en el fondo, son algo completamente diferente.

Well, the story kicks off with the typical problem of who gets the throne. It turns out that, for the first time in centuries, a "Kinu," or a Golden Crow, was born. The prophecy says this golden crow will be a legendary leader who will change everything, but what's the problem? He's the second prince, Wakamiya. His mere existence throws a huge wrench in the line of succession and starts a terrible, long-simmering rivalry with his older brother. I mean, it has all the ingredients for a great palace soap opera, and believe me, the first twelve episodes are just that. The series throws you right into the heart of the action with a ton of characters and political entanglements that really reminded me of the early days of Game of Thrones... without the dragons, of course, but with plenty of backstabbing.

And we see all this through the eyes of Yukiya, the second son of a low-ranking noble from the north. The guy is cheeky, a bit of a troublemaker, fiercely protective of his own, and wants nothing to do with the suffocating politics of the capital. But obviously, he ends up being thrown into the eye of the storm when he's forced to become the personal attendant to the mysterious Prince Wakamiya. And the relationship between these two… uff, it's by far one of the best things in the entire series. Look, I'll confess: when you pair the impulsive kid with the older, handsome, and powerful prince, my brain was already bracing for the typical, somewhat forced romance they always shove into these stories. But no, not at all.

Yatagarasu handles it with incredible maturity. Their dynamic becomes a genuine 'bromance,' a platonic one that you completely believe in. Wakamiya is cold, calculating, almost impossible to read, while Yukiya is an open book; you can see everything on his face. But they find common ground in both being the "second sons" and in all the political chaos they caused just by being born. It's a friendship built on a connection that doesn't need words, and watching it evolve from barely tolerating each other to a die-hard loyalty… is a real treat.

Bueno, la historia arranca con el típico problema de quién se queda con el trono.. resulta que, por primera vez en siglos, nació un "Kinu", o sea, un Cuervo Dorado.. la profecía dice que este cuervo dorado va a ser un líder legendario que lo cambiará todo, pero ¿cuál es el problema? Que es el segundo príncipe, Wakamiya.. su pura existencia deja la grande en la línea de sucesión y empieza un pique terrible con su hermano mayor que ya se venía cocinando, o sea, tiene todos los ingredientes para un novelón de palacio de los buenos, y créanme, los primeros doce capítulos son justo eso.. la serie te avienta de lleno al centro de la acción con un montón de personajes y enredos políticos que me recordaron un buen a los inicios de Game of Thrones… sin los dragones, claro, pero con un montón de puñaladas por la espalda.

Y nosotros vemos todo esto a través de los ojos de Yukiya, el segundo hijo de un noble de poca monta del norte, el tipo es un descarado, medio buscapleitos, protege a los suyos a muerte y no quiere saber nada de la política asfixiante de la capital.. pero obvio, lo terminan aventando al ojo del huracán cuando lo obligan a ser el asistente personal del misterioso príncipe Wakamiya. Y la relación entre estos dos… ¡uff!, es de lejos una de las mejores cosas de toda la serie, miren, se los confieso: cuando juntan al chico impulsivo con el príncipe más grande, guapo y poderoso, mi cerebro ya se estaba preparando para el típico romance medio forzado que siempre meten en estas historias, pero no, para nada.

Yatagarasu lo maneja con una madurez increíble.. lo de ellos se convierte en un 'bromance' de verdad, uno platónico y que te la crees por completo, Wakamiya es frío, calculador, casi imposible saber qué está pensando, mientras que Yukiya es un libro abierto, se le nota todo. Pero encuentran un punto en común en que ambos son los "segundones" y en todo el desastre político que causaron nomás por haber nacido.. es una amistad que se construye en una conexión que no necesita palabras, y ver cómo pasa de apenas soportarse a tener una lealtad a muerte… es una verdadera gozada.

Now, let's talk about the pacing, because I think this is where the series lost a lot of people at the beginning. If you compare it to the speed of most anime nowadays, Yatagarasu is slow... but intentionally slow, you know? The first arc slow-burns all the palace intrigue, focusing on the competition between four noble girls to see who will marry Wakamiya. Some of those moments, especially with one princess who was super innocent and delicate, felt a bit cliché to me at first. I remember thinking, "Come on, series, step it up, you can be smarter than this"... and bam, it was. That slow pace allows every character, even the ones who seem like filler, to develop with their own well-guarded motivations and secrets. Each episode drops just enough information to keep you hooked, turning every week into a delight for theorizing about who the villain is and what the hell they want.

This isn't a series you can have on in the background while doing something else; you have to pay attention, because every dialogue, every glance, matters. And just when I felt I had gotten the hang of it, when I was comfortable with the rhythm of the political gossip… episode 14 arrived. Uff! The series did such a sudden 180-degree turn that it blew my mind in the best way possible. The palace drama, which I swore was the center of everything, suddenly takes a backseat. The story hits the gas and becomes a full-blown fantasy-horror thriller. Out of nowhere, we're dealing with these ape-like humanoids, super brutal and terrifying, that attack and literally eat the Yatagarasu!

The violence is shocking, and the mystery gets a thousand times denser. As Yukiya starts investigating these attacks, the world-building just explodes! We learn about underground societies, the true nature of their world, and that there's another world beyond theirs. The scale of the story expands to a level that, I swear, reminded me of those mind-breaking revelations in Attack on Titan. It completely upended everything I expected and got me totally hooked. The series proved it was much more ambitious than just some court gossip.

Ahora sí, hablemos del ritmo, porque yo creo que aquí fue donde la serie perdió a un montón de gente al principio, si la comparas con la velocidad a la que van casi todos los animes de ahora, Yatagarasu es lenta.. pero lenta a propósito, ¿eh? El primer arco te va cocinando a fuego lento toda la intriga del palacio, centrándose en la competencia entre cuatro chicas de la nobleza para ver quién se casa con Wakamiya.. algunos de esos momentos, sobre todo con una princesa que era súper inocente y delicada, se me hicieron medio cliché al principio. Recuerdo que pensé: "A ver, serie, ponte las pilas, tú puedes ser más inteligente que esto".. ¡pum!, que lo fue, ese ritmo lento deja que cada personaje, hasta los que parecen de relleno, se desarrolle con sus propias motivaciones y secretos bien guardados.. cada capítulo te suelta la información justa para dejarte picado, convirtiendo cada semana en un gustazo para armar teorías de quién es el malo y qué demonios quiere.

Esta no es una serie que puedes poner de fondo mientras haces otra cosa; tienes que ponerle atención, porque cada diálogo, cada miradita, importa.. y justo cuando yo sentía que ya le había agarrado la onda, cuando ya estaba bien cómodo con el ritmo del chisme político… llegó el capítulo 14. ¡Uff! La serie dio un giro de 180 grados tan de golpe que me voló la cabeza de la mejor forma posible.. el drama de palacio, que yo juraba que era el centro de todo, de repente pasa a segundo plano, la historia mete el acelerador y se convierte en un thriller de fantasía y terror con todas las de la ley. De la nada, estamos lidiando con unos humanoides que parecen simios, súper brutales y aterradores, que atacan y, literalmente, ¡se comen a los Yatagarasu!

La violencia te impacta y el misterio se pone mil veces más denso.. mientras Yukiya empieza a investigar estos ataques, la construcción del mundo, el world-building, ¡explota! Nos enteramos de sociedades subterráneas, de la verdadera naturaleza de su mundo y de que hay otro mundo más allá del suyo.. la escala de la historia se agranda a un nivel que, se los juro, me recordó a esas revelaciones que te rompen la cabeza en Attack on Titan. Le dio la vuelta por completo a todo lo que yo esperaba, y me enganchó con todo, la serie demostró que era mucho más ambiciosa que un simple chismecito de la corte.

But the series isn't perfect. Look, my biggest complaint is that, with all the political tension and life-or-death situations, it sometimes feels like it pulls its punches. There were so many moments when a character was on the verge of death, and I was there, in front of the screen, thinking, "Just kill them! Do it!" I wanted the story to be harsher, to really make you feel like no one was safe, the way Game of Thrones did so well. I needed more of those morally gray characters who make you doubt whether they're good or bad. And let's be honest, the animation in Yatagarasu is... passable. It gets the job done, and that's it. It's not bad, not at all, but for a period drama that thrives on elegant costumes, beautiful settings, and subtle glances, you're left wishing it looked more premium, more polished. Buuuut, what it lacks in animation, it more than makes up for with spectacular art direction.

The team was incredibly smart in how they used light, scenery, and color to tell the story. There's a scene, at the climax of the first arc, where they're exposing a culprit... as the evidence comes out, the light in the room dims and everything turns an intense, blood-red color. The shadows stretch, warp, and become monsters behind the characters. It's a masterclass in using visuals to build tension, and it shows you that the team put a lot of thought into adapting the novel. All of this comes together to create what is, without a doubt, a super underrated anime. In a year where we had another brilliant historical drama like The Apothecary Diaries, which got a ton of well-deserved attention, Yatagarasu flew under the radar; almost no one paid it any mind. I see almost no one talking about it. I bet people didn't give it a chance because it was too slow or too niche, but they missed out on a story with brutal depth, a fascinating mythology, and some of the best character development I've seen in a long time.

So, I give Yatagarasu a solid 8/10. The just-okay animation and its occasional fear of being crueler keep it from a perfect 10, but the strength of its story, characters, and world-building is undeniable. If you're looking for a smart, gripping fantasy that will keep you on the edge of your seat, please, PLEASE, do yourself a favor and watch this series. You won't regret the time you invest. Pero la serie no es perfecta, a ver, mi mayor queja es que, con toda la tensión política y las situaciones de vida o muerte, a veces se siente que no se la juegan del todo.. había tantos momentos en que un personaje estaba a nada de morir, y yo estaba ahí, frente a la pantalla, pensando: "¡Ya mátalo! ¡Hazlo!". Quería que la historia fuera más cruda, que de verdad sintieras que nadie estaba a salvo, como lo hacía tan bien Game of Thrones, me faltaron más personajes de esos moralmente grises, que te hacen dudar de si son buenos o malos.. hay que ser honestos, la animación en Yatagarasu es... pasable, cumple, y ya. No es mala, para nada, pero para un drama de época que vive de los trajes elegantes, los escenarios preciosos y las miradas sutiles, te quedas con ganas de que se viera más premium, más pulida.. peeeero, lo que le falta en animación, lo compensa con creces con una dirección de arte espectacular.

El equipo fue súper inteligente con cómo usó la luz, los escenarios y el color para contar la historia, hay una escena, en el clímax del primer arco, donde están descubriendo a un culpable.. mientras van saliendo las pruebas, la luz del cuarto se va apagando y todo se pone de un color rojo sangre, bien intenso. Las sombras se estiran, se deforman y se convierten en monstruos detrás de los personajes, es una cátedra de cómo usar lo visual para meterte la tensión en el cuerpo, y te demuestra que el equipo le pensó muchísimo para adaptar la novela.. todo esto se junta para crear lo que es, sin duda, un anime súper infravalorado. En un año donde tuvimos otro dramón histórico genial como The Apothecary Diaries, que se llevó un montón de atención súper merecida, Yatagarasu pasó por debajo del radar, casi nadie la peló.. no veo a casi nadie hablando de ella.. seguro la gente no le dio chance por ser muy lenta o muy de nicho, pero se perdieron una historia con una profundidad brutal, una mitología fascinante y uno de los mejores desarrollos de personaje que he visto en mucho tiempo.

Así que, a Yatagarasu e doy un sólido 8/10. La animación que solo cumple y que a veces le da miedito ser más cruel le quita puntos para ser un 10 perfecto, pero la fuerza de su historia, sus personajes y su world-building es innegable, si andan buscando una fantasía inteligente y que los atrape, que los tenga al borde del asiento, por favor, POR FAVOR, háganse un favor y vean esta serie.. no se van a arrepentir del tiempo que le inviertan.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
