Quiet Days After the Storm
Life at the Kamiya Dojo has started to feel peaceful again after the nightmare with Jin-e. Kaoru, still adjusting to that calm, looks around the dojo and frowns—Kenshin is nowhere to be found. Yahiko, ever the honest one, casually mentions that Kenshin went to a gambling hall with Sanosuke. Kaoru’s reaction says it all: disbelief mixed with irritation.
Meanwhile, at the gambling hall, the contrast couldn’t be greater. Kenshin, polite as always, sits cross-legged beside Sanosuke, surrounded by noise and cigarette smoke. Dice roll across the floor as Kenshin quietly predicts every result, his uncanny accuracy making gamblers uneasy. Even so, he seems uncomfortable. “A place like this doesn’t sit right with me,” he admits softly.
Sanosuke laughs. “Your sword’s illegal too, remember?” The irony isn’t lost on either of them.
A Mysterious Woman
Outside, chaos unfolds. A young woman runs through the alleys, pursued by thugs. Her expression is a mix of fear and determination. She bursts into the gambling hall just as Sanosuke throws his dice again. The room goes silent for a second as she gasps out a plea for help.
Two men rush in after her, weapons drawn. Sanosuke doesn’t even hesitate—his fist meets one of their faces before they can take another step. Kenshin swiftly disarms the second and flips him to the ground with precision and grace. A smaller man, armed with darts, tries to intervene but is taken down effortlessly by Kenshin.
The room is chaos again, but the fight is over as quickly as it began. Two of Sanosuke’s friends lie injured on the floor. The woman, trying to compose herself, offers Kenshin and Sanosuke a reward if they protect her. Sanosuke, already irritated, grabs her wrist. “Forget the money—help my friends first!” he snaps.
That’s when something falls from her clothes.
The Truth Revealed
Tiny packets spill out of her sleeves and hit the floor with a dull thud. Kenshin kneels, picks one up, and his eyes narrow. Opium. The same poison that killed one of Sanosuke’s friends not long ago. The realization sinks in instantly.
Sanosuke’s expression hardens. “So that’s what this is about…” he mutters. The woman looks down, her voice trembling. Whether she’s guilty or trapped, no one knows yet—but the tension in the air shifts. This isn’t just about a fight in a gambling hall anymore. It’s the beginning of something darker.
Kenshin looks at the woman with quiet seriousness. “You’ll have to tell us everything,” he says gently.
Outside, the night continues as usual, but inside that small gambling den, the next chapter of their journey has already begun.
Final Thoughts
This chapter is a perfect breather after the emotional storm of the Jin-e arc. It starts light—with humor and daily life—but quickly reminds us that peace never lasts long for Kenshin and Sanosuke. The gambling hall scene captures their friendship perfectly: Sano’s recklessness and Kenshin’s calm balance one another out.
The arrival of the mysterious woman and the discovery of the opium packets set the tone for a new kind of conflict—one not fought with swords alone, but with morality, loyalty, and trust. Beauty on the Run isn’t just a new story; it’s the first shadow of a larger, more dangerous world waiting to unfold.
