The Guardian at the Gate
Inside Kanryu’s mansion, the air is thick with smoke and fear. Every hallway feels like a trap, every shadow an enemy. As Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Yahiko advance, a familiar presence steps into their path—the masked ninja Han’nya. His oni mask gleams in the torchlight, and his calm voice echoes through the corridor.
“I will defend this post to the end,” he declares.
There’s no hesitation in Kenshin’s eyes. “Then I’ll break through.”
The stage is set for a battle not of hatred, but of duty—between two warriors who fight for their beliefs.
The Fist and the Blade
Han’nya moves first, faster than anyone expects. His kempo strikes are brutal, disciplined, and perfectly timed. Every punch seems to predict Kenshin’s next step, each kick exploding with impossible reach. Kenshin blocks one blow, but the next grazes his shoulder—Han’nya’s arm seemed to stretch.
“What kind of sorcery is this?” Yahiko shouts from behind.
Sanosuke grits his teeth. “No sorcery,” he mutters. “This guy’s body... it’s something else.”
Han’nya presses forward relentlessly, his long arms sweeping like steel whips. Kenshin realizes that brute strength alone won’t win here—he has to understand the truth behind the technique.
The Spy’s Truth
Kenshin studies every movement. The rhythm of Han’nya’s stance, the faint strain in his shoulders—then he sees it. The arms aren’t magic. They’re the result of painful transformation, muscles and joints stretched beyond their natural limits through years of torturous training.
“Your reach…” Kenshin says quietly, “you earned it with suffering.”
Han’nya’s smile fades behind the mask. “So you noticed.”
He charges again, faster, fiercer—his body a weapon honed through agony. Kenshin meets him head-on, his sakabato moving like flowing water. The impact shakes the corridor, a clash between a man seeking redemption and one who has already paid his price in flesh.
Final Thoughts
The Martial-Artist and the Spy is a duel of willpower as much as skill. Han’nya isn’t a monster—he’s a man who sacrificed his body for loyalty and purpose, a mirror of what Kenshin might have become had he never sought peace.
Their fight isn’t about victory, but understanding. Beneath the mask, Han’nya’s humanity still burns—and through combat, Kenshin begins to see it. The path forward leads deeper into Kanryu’s mansion… and closer to Aoshi himself.
