The Final Blow
The duel between Kenshin and Sanosuke reaches its peak. Sano spins his enormous zanbato over his head, ready to end the fight once and for all. Kenshin doesn’t flinch. In a single, fluid motion, he strikes with the edged side of his Sakabato—something he almost never does—and slices the massive blade in two. The broken weapon clatters to the ground, and for a moment, everything goes still.
Then, Kenshin leaps high into the air and delivers one of his signature Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu techniques—Ryu Tsui Sen (Dragon Hammer Flash)—slamming down on Sanosuke’s head. The impact is brutal, but Sanosuke somehow remains standing. Kenshin, impressed, admits that no one has ever taken that hit and stayed on their feet. He tells Sano to stay put while he goes to fetch a doctor, but Sano refuses to let the fight end that way.
Words That Heal
Bleeding and staggering, Sanosuke shouts that he’d rather die than lose to an Ishin Shishi. Kenshin calmly walks up and punches him square in the face—not out of anger, but to wake him up. He reminds Sano that the Sekihotai, his fallen comrades, didn’t fight to kill patriots—they fought to build a new era for the people. Kaoru and Yahiko rush in, pleading with Sano not to judge Kenshin based only on his past.
It’s here that Kenshin finally opens up about the meaning behind his Sakabato—a sword with its edge reversed, forged to protect rather than to kill. It’s his way of carrying his sins while still helping those in need. For the first time, Sanosuke truly listens. The rage that’s been burning inside him fades into understanding. He collapses—not from defeat, but from exhaustion and release.
A New Ally
The next day, at the Akabeko, Sanosuke is back on his feet—knocking out a few thugs like it’s nothing. When Kenshin, Kaoru, and Yahiko arrive, Sano tells them he’s done with being “Zanza.” From now on, he’ll stick around Kenshin, to see for himself whether this so-called wanderer is truly different from the patriots he despises. He grins, walks away without paying (as usual), and in that moment, it feels like a new chapter has begun.
The rivalry is over. A friendship—one forged through pain, respect, and shared ideals—is just beginning.
Final Thoughts
I really love how this act closes the first big arc of the manga. The fight between Kenshin and Sanosuke isn’t just about strength—it’s about belief. Two men from opposite sides of a revolution finally find common ground. Kenshin’s calm resolve and Sano’s raw passion balance each other perfectly, and their chemistry becomes one of the emotional cores of the series.
It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, the people who start as your fiercest enemies can end up becoming your greatest allies.
