I think this one is the most talked-about anime lately, loaded with romance, drama, and intrigue. I call it a telenovela 😅, but a good one. I've already read some reviews here, but I also want to share my opinion including some spoilers
Synopsis
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (薬屋のひとりごと) is a period drama set in a reality similar to the "Tang Dynasty", that is, the Chinese Empire. Maomao is an ordinary girl, raised in the Red Light District by her adoptive father, a doctor from whom she learned everything about medicines and poisons, which seems to be the girl's only real interest, since the subject obsesses her. She also spends a lot of time at the Verdigris House, a renowned brothel, where she works and spends time with the women there, who have also influenced her upbringing.
Maomao led a simple life until one day, almost as if by fate, she is kidnapped and sold as a servant to the Imperial Palace. Contrary to what one might expect, she doesn't take the situation too badly, but instead tries to do the best job possible to eventually earn her freedom. In fact, she possesses impressive perspicacity, and with her intelligence, she manages to solve many mysteries within the palace. There are many intrigues, but the most significant is the death of one of the emperor's sons, which, of course, will pique the protagonist's curiosity...
I don't usually watch romance anime; in fact, I don't remember ever seeing one before, at least not ones that were primarily about that. However, I think what captured me about this story is that it's not just about the romance, but it's mixed with drama and, above all, mystery, which makes it much more interesting. It's not a super-elaborate thriller, but it does include many puzzles that, while mostly easy to solve, keep you entertained, watching how Maomao discovers the answer to everything.
And the other hook is precisely the protagonist. Maomao is a rather peculiar girl; she's perceptive, intelligent, sensible, and astute, managing to identify the solution to problems in the most pragmatic way possible, in addition to being quite prudent, understanding her social position and the limited scope she has. She doesn't try to be directly challenging, but rather uses her intelligence to be so in a subtle way, prioritizing usefulness over emotions. And speaking of her feelings, she's quite closed off and inexpressive, although she's aware that (of course) she does have emotions, she just represses them. This evidently has to do with her difficult childhood and her living conditions, but far from being simple, she's different, expressing what she thinks and feels in her own very unique way.
Jinshi is also a striking character, as he is willing to sacrifice certain important things for a greater purpose, and he also applies an intelligent strategy. However, unlike Maomao, he often lets his emotions get the better of him, although he manages to recover quickly most of the time. He is also charismatic and physically attractive, but far from seeing this as a weakness (because he was not very "masculine" by the standards of the time), he sees it as a tool that he uses to his advantage whenever possible.
Therefore, both protagonists have differences but also several similarities, so when a romance arises, it doesn't seem forced, but rather like two people who connected, perhaps under unexpected circumstances, but who manage to complement each other. This is important in a love story, since things must have a solid foundation in each one's personality to justify the emergence of a romance. Although Jinshi and Maomao's union is unusual due to their social status, it is not unthinkable given their personalities. This way, the viewer can connect with the romance because it is genuine, it doesn't come out of nowhere.
It's not all romance, though. There's plenty of telenovela-style drama, where we discover Maomao's origins, Jinshi's true personality, and all the ties that connect those who live in the palace and those who were once there. As I said, there's a lot of drama, but it's well-connected. Nothing seems to be for convenience, but everything seems genuinely plausible. What could be considered a deus ex machina is that Maomao ends up working in the palace, but the truth is, the way she gets there is quite common for the context. That she was forced to be a servant, sold like an insignificant object, honestly isn't that unusual.
There's also quite a bit of comedy, very light, but perfect for breaking the tension, as those little breaks are necessary in stories that aren't meant to be so serious. And I think this anime is the perfect example of this. The story aims to move you, make you laugh, and stir up pure emotions in you, while remaining light enough to make it entertaining to watch.
Although I jokingly call it "my telenovela" it's not really an unnecessary, over-the-top drama. In fact, it's constructed to be moderately intriguing and emotional, which is why it's truly entertaining. Other aspects that contribute to this are that the characters are all striking, constructed to contribute something to the plot, and each with distinctive characteristics, making them memorable. For example, although the consorts appear every once in a while, you remember them all for their charisma, attitude, or even their appearance. Even the most secondary character has something remarkable about them. And if that weren't enough, the soundtrack is the perfect complement to the story, reflecting that romance in the perfect moments. The animation is also beautiful, with subtle but necessary details to enhance the beauty of everything.
This is an anime I highly recommend if you like these types of stories, as it's lighthearted, entertaining, and full of emotions that will make you fall in love with Jinshi and laugh or feel tenderness for Maomao. So if you're looking for something like that, this is the perfect option for you ✨

Creo que de los animes de los que más se habla últimamente es justamente este, cargado de romance, drama e intrigas. Yo digo que es una telenovela 😅, pero una de las buenas. Ya he leído algunas reseñas por acá pero yo también quiero compartirles mi opinión incluyendo algunos spoilers
Sinopsis
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (薬屋のひとりごと) es un anime de época, ambientado en una realidad similar a la «dinastía Tang», es decir, el imperio chino. Maomao es una chica corriente, criada en el Barrio Rojo por su padre adoptivo, que es un médico de quien aprendió todo sobre medicinas y venenos, lo cual parece ser el único interés real de la chica, puesto que el tema la obsesiona. También suele pasar mucho tiempo en la Casa Verdigris, un reconocido burdel, donde trabaja y además comparte con las mujeres que están allí, quienes también han influido en su crianza.
Maomao llevaba una vida sencilla, hasta que un día casi como broma del destino, es secuestrada y vendida como sirvienta al Palacio Imperial. Lejos de lo que se pudiera esperar, ella no se toma tan a mal la situación, sino que intenta hacer el mejor trabajo posible para ganarse luego su libertad. De hecho, ella tiene una impresionante perspicacia, por lo que con su inteligencia logra resolver muchos misterio dentro del palacio. Hay muchas intrigas, pero la más relevante es la de la muerte de uno de los hijos del emperador, la cual, por supuesto, captará la curiosidad de la protagonista...
No suelo ver animes románticos, de hecho, no recuerdo haber visto ninguno antes, al menos no que se trataran principalmente de eso. Sin embargo, creo que lo que logró atraparme de esta historia es que no solo está el elemento romántico, sino que está mezclado con el drama y principalmente el misterio, lo que lo hace mucho más interesante. No es un thriller súper elaborado, pero sí incluyen muchos enigmas que aunque en su mayoría sean fáciles de resolver, te mantienen entretenido, viendo cómo Maomao descubrirá la respuesta a todo.
Y justamente el otro gancho es la protagonista. Maomao es una chica bastante peculiar; es perspicaz, inteligente, sensata y astuta, logra identificar la solución a los problemas de la forma más pragmática posible, además de ser bastante prudente, comprendiendo su posición social y el limitado alcance que tiene. No intenta ser directamente desafiante, sino que aprovecha su inteligencia para serlo de forma sutil, priorizando la utilidad sobre las emociones. Y hablando de lo sentimental, es alguien bastante cerrada y poco expresiva, aunque está consciente de que (por supuesto) sí tiene emociones, solo que las reprime. Esto evidentemente tiene que ver con su infancia difícil y las condiciones de vida que tiene, pero lejos de ser alguien simple ella es diferente, demostrando lo que piensa y siente a su manera muy particular.
Jinshi también es un personaje llamativo, puesto que está dispuesto a sacrificar ciertas cosas importantes por un fin mayor, además de que aplica una estrategia inteligente. Sin embargo, al contrario de Maomao, él muchas veces se deja llevar por sus emociones, aunque logra recuperarse. Además es carismático y físicamente atractivo, pero lejos de ver esto como una debilidad (por ser poco «masculino» para los estándares de la época), lo ve como una herramienta que utiliza a su favor cada vez que puede.
Por ello, ambos protagonistas tienen diferencias pero también varias similitudes, por lo que cuando surge el romance no parece forzado, sino más bien dos personas que conectaron quizás en circunstancias inesperadas, pero que se logran complementar. Esto es importante en una historia de amor, puesto que las cosas deben tener una base sólida en la personalidad de cada uno como para justificar que surja un romance. Aunque Jinshi y Maomao sea una unión poco común por el estatus social, no es impensable en cuanto a sus formas de ser. Así el espectador logra conectar con el romance, porque es genuino.
Claro, no todo es romance. Hay bastante drama al estilo telenovela, donde descubrimos el origen de Maomao, la verdadera personalidad de Jinshi, y todos los vínculos que conectan a aquellas personas que viven en el palacio y las que alguna vez estuvieron allí. Como les digo, mucho drama, pero está bien conectado. Nada parece estar por conveniencia realmente, sino que todo parece genuinamente plausible. Lo que pudiera considerarse un deus ex machina es que Maomao termine en trabajando en el palacio, pero la verdad, la forma en la que llega es bastante común para el contexto. Que haya sido obligada a ser sirvienta, vendida cual objeto insignificante, honestamente no es tan raro.
También hay bastante comedia, muy ligera, pero perfecta para romper la tensión pues es necesario esos pequeños descansos en historias que no pretenden ser tan serias. Y creo que este anime es el ejemplo perfecto de esto. La historia pretende conmoverte, hacerte reír y despertar emociones puras en ti, siendo lo suficientemente ligero para que sea algo entretenido de ver.
Aunque en broma lo llamo «mi novela», realmente no es drama innecesario y exagerado. En realidad, está construido para que sea moderadamente intrigante y emocional, por ello es que es verdaderamente entretenido. Otros aspectos que ayudan a esto es que los personajes son todos llamativos, construidos para que aporten algo a la trama y con características destacables en cada uno, lo que los hace memorables. Por ejemplo, aunque las consortes aparecen pocas veces, las recuerdas a todas por su carisma, actitud o incluso por cómo lucen. Hasta el más secundario de los personajes tiene algo destacable. Y por si fuera poco, la banda sonora es el complemento perfecto para el tipo de historia, puesto que refleja ese romance en los momentos perfectos. Además la animación es hermosa, con detalles sutiles pero necesarios para realzar la belleza de todo.
La verdad es un anime que recomiendo totalmente si te gustan este tipo de historias, puesto que es ligero, entretenido y cargado de emociones que te harán enamorarte de Jinshi y reírte o sentir ternura con Maomao. Así que si buscas algo como eso, es la opción perfecta ✨
