Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Saku Chitose—or rather, that’s how he introduces himself after delivering a philosophical monologue in which he describes spring and the start of a “new year” full of surprises, opportunities, and changes. After one of his friends, Yua Uchida, comes over to say hello on their way to school, Saku shows her his phone, displaying the derogatory comments other people have made about him. She doesn’t deny anything, but instead encourages him, and he sarcastically wonders why people hate him so much when he’s just the most popular guy in school, as well as one of the hardest-working and most sociable students in the entire class.

Luego de que una de sus amigas, Yua Uchida, se le acerque a saludar mientras van de camino a la escuela, Saku le muestra su celular a ella con comentarios despectivos que hacen otras personas sobre él. I think this will be the last RomCom anime I’ll be covering from last year—not because there aren’t any more anime in this genre to discuss, but because it’s the last one worth writing a personal review for. It took me a long time to get to this one because I wanted to confirm some details about its broadcast and the production issues it faced between late last year and early this year. In short, it had several delays and hiatuses during its broadcast, which is why it ended up dragging on too long. But don’t worry, the first season is now available in its entirety with all 13 episodes to watch.
Now, the question is whether or not I recommend watching it, after having watched it as it aired and having waited all this time since last year. I think the main question is whether or not it’s worth watching since, as I said at the beginning, it’s just another RomCom that doesn’t stray far from being your typical run-of-the-mill teenage love story. But I think this anime has something that makes it a bit different from other romantic comedy animes, and that’s the way it disguises itself as a romantic comedy by tackling somewhat dramatic themes like bullying, harassment, and identity crises.
Creo que este será el último anime RomCom que les traeré del año pasado, no porque no hayan más animes de este género por hablar, sino porque es el último que vale la pena hacerle una reseña personal. Me demoré mucho para esto debido a que quería confirmar algo sobre su emisión y dichos problemas de producción que tuvo entre finales del año pasado y principios de este año. En resumen, tuvo varios retrasos y pausas durante su emisión y por eso se llegó a extender demasiado. Pero no se preocupen, la primera temporada ya está disponible y completa con sus 13 episodios para ver.
Ahora, el tema es si les recomiendo o no verla, luego de haberla visto en emisión con todo el tiempo que estuve esperando desde el año pasado. Creo que la pregunta principal es si vale la pena o no verla ya que, como les dije al principio, es un RomCom más que no se aleja mucho de ser la típica historia de amor adolescente del montón. Pero creo que este anime tiene algo que lo hace un tanto diferente a los demás animes de comedia romántica y es su forma de disimular ser una comedia romántica al tratar temas un tanto dramáticos como el bullying, el acoso y la crisis de identidad.

First of all, I’d like to mention that the story told in this anime focuses primarily on our protagonist, who is the same character narrating the story in verse from the very beginning of the first episode onward. We’ll follow the school life and personal experiences of Saku Chitose, who, as you read at the start, is the typical popular, studious guy with perfect grades who is very sociable and friendly to everyone. We see that, from the very beginning, our protagonist suffers some bullying at school from other students who speak ill of him and constantly criticize him.
At first, we don’t hear much about this; rather, we see how his social circle comes to consist mostly of girls who, in one way or another, have a romantic interest in our protagonist. And not only that, but each of Saku’s friends is both popular and attractive in one way or another. Each one stands out in her own way, whether for her physical appearance, her social skills, her musical talents, or her athletic abilities. Another interesting detail to highlight about this anime, especially regarding Saku’s school life, are the “missions” assigned to them by their homeroom teacher.
Antes que nada, les menciono que la historia que nos narran en este anime se centra principalmente en nuestro protagonista, quien es el mismo que hace dicha narración poética desde el principio de su primer episodio en adelante. Veremos la vida escolar y particular de Saku Chitose, quien como ya leyeron al principio, es el típico chico popular, estudioso, con calificaciones perfectas y que es muy sociable y amigable con todos. Vemos que, desde un principio, nuestro protagonista sufre de cierto bullying en la escuela por parte de otros estudiantes que hablan mal sobre él y lo critican constantemente.
Al principio no se nos habla mucho sobre esto, más bien vemos cómo su grupo social llega a ser mayormente de chicas que, de alguna u otra manera, tienen algún interés amoroso con nuestro protagonista. Y no solo eso, sino que cada amiga de Saku es tanto popular como atractiva de alguna manera u otra. Cada una se destaca de manera particular ya sea por su aspecto físico, sus habilidades sociales, sus habilidades para la música o para el deporte. Otro detalle interesante a destacar de este anime, especialmente de la vida escolar de Saku son las “misiones” que les da su profesor tutor.

For example, in the first episode, Saku is assigned a task—presumably as class president—to visit a classmate who is struggling with severe social isolation. His name is Kenta Yamazaki, and during our protagonist’s first visit to his home, we learn that Kenta is one of the classmates who most criticizes and hates Saku because of his personality and his popularity at school and with the girls. This clearly shows us something interesting about Kenta: he is the complete opposite of our protagonist.
This episode gives us a perfect introduction, not only to our protagonist, but also to his school life and the specific situations he deals with regarding other classmates and friends. When he visits his classmate Kenta to try to cheer him up and convince him to return to class, we can see one of the main problems Saku always faces in his life: people’s hatred and envy. Whether it’s because of who he is or how he appears at school, his image as a “popular guy” gives those around him a distorted view of him, and this leads to criticism directed at him.

En este episodio nos dan una introducción perfecta, no solo de nuestro protagonista, sino de su vida escolar y de los casos particulares que trata con otros compañeros de clase y amistades. Cuando visita a su compañero Kenta para intentar animarlo y convencerlo de volver a asistir a clases, podemos darnos cuenta de uno de los principales problemas que Saku afronta siempre en su vida: el odio y la envidia de la gente. Ya sea por cómo es o por lo que aparenta ser en la escuela, su imagen de “chico popular” les da una Imagen tergiversada a los que lo rodean y esto termina en críticas hacia su persona.

Be that as it may, some viewers might come to understand everything that’s happening to our protagonist, while others might simply side with the people who constantly criticize him because of his personality. I mean, in this kind of romantic comedy anime, the protagonists are usually the same old types: the shy, withdrawn, unattractive, or unsociable guy who always falls for the popular girl in class. But that’s not the case here. Saku Chitose is the popular guy who, in most rom-coms, is usually cast as the love rival and that’s it.
Characters like this almost never get any character development or spotlight because of how superficial they are. He’s like the typical attractive, popular girl in class—a character so generic that she’s become a cliché in this genre of anime. That’s probably why many people found it strange at the time that this anime was about a protagonist who is popular and all that. It’s like the typical narrative device of switching the protagonist—who is usually the hero—to be the villain of the story. Although I think this example works better than what we actually see in this anime.
Sea como sea, algunos pueden llegar a entender todo esto que le sucede a nuestro protagonista o simplemente pueden estar de acuerdo con la gente que lo critica constantemente debido a su personalidad. O sea, normalmente en este tipo de animes RomCom los protagonistas siempre llegan a ser los mismos de siempre: el chico tímido, retraído, poco atractivo o nada social que siempre se enamora de la chica popular de la clase. Pero en esta ocasión no ocurre así, Saku Chitose es el chico popular que, frecuentemente, lo colocan en la mayoría de RomCom como el enemigo amoroso y ya.

And I’m not exaggerating; it’s just that Saku Chitose’s personality is exactly what you’d expect from the typical popular guy—he has sky-high self-esteem and a rather inflated opinion of himself. While we gather this from his frequent conversations with his team—which, by the way, is known as “Team Chitose”—he actually uses a lot of sarcasm in his conversations and self-affirmations. Whether as a defense mechanism or simply as part of his personality, Saku often uses his role as the popular guy to reach certain people and solve certain problems.
Something interesting about all this is the very peculiar way Saku has of solving each of the problems or cases assigned to him as class president. I’ll just say that, for a popular and intelligent guy, he has a somewhat extravagant and even absurd way of dealing with these problems. For example, regarding the case mentioned above from the first episode, I’ll just say that, to get close to Kenta, he had to literally “break down” the barrier that separated them. I find these ways of addressing and resolving sensitive issues like bullying, harassment, or a lack of support for certain goals or dreams to be quite interesting.
Y no lo digo por exageración, sino porque vemos que la personalidad de Saku Chitose no es más que la típica del chico popular, con una altísima autoestima y una opinión bastante exagerada de sí mismo. Si bien esto lo extraemos de sus frecuentes diálogos entre su equipo, el cual por cierto es conocido por el nombre “equipo Chitose”, en realidad utiliza mucho el sarcasmo en sus conversaciones y afirmaciones de sí mismo. Ya sea como método de protección o simplemente como parte de su personalidad, Saku suele utilizar su papel como chico popular para llegar a ciertas personas y solucionar ciertos problemas.
Algo interesante de todo esto es la forma tan peculiar que tiene Saku de resolver cada uno de los problemas o casos que se le asignan como presidente de la clase. Solo diré que, para ser un chico popular e inteligente, tiene una forma un tanto extravagante y hasta absurda de afrontar dichos problemas. Por ejemplo, con el caso mencionado arriba de su primer episodio solo les diré que, para acercarse a Kenta, tuvo que “romper” literalmente esa barrera que los dividía a ambos. Considero que dichas maneras de afrontar y resolver problemas delicados como el bullying, el acoso o la falta de apoyo en ciertas metas o sueños; es un tanto interesante.

But despite everything we learn about our protagonist in this first part of the season, it’s not enough to understand certain reasons why he refrains from certain things or becomes obsessed with certain cases. At one point in the anime, we see that certain aspects of Saku’s past are mentioned, but we’re told almost nothing about them. And it’s curious how they set these topics aside, while each episode focuses solely on the case at hand. The same goes for the romance, as we also see the typical RomCom cliché where all his female friends have a crush on him.
Creo que es debido a esto -aparte del excelente apartado audiovisual que tiene- que decidí aguantarme todo el tiempo que se tomó este anime para terminar de emitirse este año. Otra cosa que me gusta es que el anime no se centra únicamente en la historia de Saku Chitose, sino que le da cierto protagonismo a diferentes personajes secundarios, como Kenta en los primeros episodios. Digamos que cada caso (o arco narrativo) conocemos a ciertos personajes que llegan a darnos cierto desarrollo y mostrarnos ciertos aspectos de la vida de nuestro protagonista.
Pero a pesar de todo lo que llegamos a conocer de nuestro protagonista en esta primera parte de la temporada, no es suficiente como para saber ciertas razones del por qué se abstiene de ciertas cosas o se obsesiona con ciertos casos. En cierta parte del anime vemos que hay ciertas cosas del pasado de Saku que mencionan, pero que no nos cuentan casi nada. Y es curioso cómo dejan estos temas para luego mientras que en cada episodio se centran únicamente en cada caso que tratan. Con respecto al romance sucede igual, ya que también vemos el típico cliché de todo RomCom de que todas sus amigas gustan de él.

However, Saku isn’t looking to get involved with anyone; rather, he avoids forming close friendships with anyone. While there are a few exceptions, in the end, these relationships never develop into anything more than a good friendship—and that’s it. This might be due to the script—the cliché of every teenage love story that never goes anywhere—or it could simply be a small narrative detail related to our protagonist’s unique personality or past. As I mentioned before, there are many interesting details we know about Saku and many more we don’t know yet.
Beyond all the melodrama that unfolds in each episode of this anime, I like that this story focuses more on certain important aspects of a student’s teenage life, but from the perspective of the typical popular guy at school. I’m not going to say it’s the best romantic comedy anime I’ve ever seen, since it falls short in many ways when it comes to romance. Meanwhile, as far as comedy goes, it frequently relies on the usual double entendres and suggestive humor. There isn’t much to say about that either.
Sin embargo, Saku no busca tener ninguna relación con nadie, sino que más bien se abstiene de una relación amistosa con todas. Si bien hay una que otra excepción, al final no terminan en nada más que en una buena amistad y ya. That’s why I believe that, as a RomCom per se, it lacks both the appropriate setting and plot to be categorized strictly within this genre. Yes, it has its drama, its controversial and unique themes, and its own particular way of developing its characters and story. But nothing we see in this anime is enough to classify it as a simple teenage love story. I think it’s more of a story about a teenager with a lot to say, but who, in the end, still leads the typical life of the popular kid in class.
Or maybe not—maybe I’m wrong about that last part, and it has something more interesting to tell us or hasn’t told us yet; who knows. The anime started off very well—I have to give it credit for that—but then we see how the plot began to fragment into one subplot after another, and in the end we come to realize that many of the things this anime tells us aren’t all that different from what we see in any other teen anime. I’ll say it again: it does stand out a bit in certain narrative aspects and with good character development, but little else, to be honest.
Es por eso que considero que, como RomCom como tal, no tiene ni la descripción ni la trama adecuada como para encasillarse en este género como tal. Si, tiene su drama, tiene sus temas polémicos y particulares y tiene su forma particular de desarrollar a sus personajes e historia. Pero nada de lo que llegamos a ver en este anime es suficiente como para catalogarlo como una simple historia de amor adolescente. Pienso más bien que es una historia de un adolescente con muchas cosas que contar, pero que al final sigue siendo la vida típica del estudiante popular de la clase.
O puede que no, puede que quizá me equivoque con esto último y tenga algo más interesante que contarnos o que aún no nos ha contado, quién sabe. El anime empezó muy bien, eso sí tengo que aplaudirlo, pero luego vemos cómo la trama llegó a fragmentarse en un caso tras otro y al final llegamos a comprender que muchas de las cosas que nos cuenta este anime no son tan diferentes a lo que llegamos a ver en cualquier otro anime de adolescentes. Repito, sí llega a destacarse un poco en ciertos aspectos narrativos y buenos desarrollos de personajes, pero poco más, la verdad.

The anime’s strength lies in its audiovisual presentation, which was the first thing that caught my attention when I started watching it as it aired. And that’s no surprise, given the track record of the studio behind this adaptation and the potential they possess. While we may have fallen short in terms of the anime’s weekly, fixed broadcast schedule at the time, there’s almost nothing to complain about when it comes to the audiovisual work they did here. The animation style, character design, vibrant and varied color palette, and excellent use of light and shadow are all fascinating.
The anime also features excellent drawing styles, linework, and animation that really stand out, especially when presenting us with well-designed shots or scenes. I really like the way they play with colors, lines, and many other details. We also see a certain fluidity that stands out at certain moments in the anime. The visual effects they use look amazing and really bring out the best in some of the settings. The same goes for the sound effects. The soundtrack is excellent from start to finish, including its fantastic Opening and exciting Ending. Anyway, here’s an anime that might interest you.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in the romance, comedy, and drama genres.
El anime tiene su punto fuerte en su aspecto audiovisual, cosa que fue lo primero que me llamó la atención cuando lo empecé a ver en emisión. Y no es de menos al tomar en cuenta el trayecto que tiene el estudio que estuvo a cargo de esta adaptación y el potencial que tienen. Si bien llegamos a fallar en cuanto a la emisión semanal y fija del anime en su momento, no hay casi nada de qué quejarse en cuanto al trabajo audiovisual que hicieron aquí. Tanto el estilo de animación, el diseño de los personajes, la paleta de colores vivos y variados y el excelente uso de luces y sombras es fascinante.
El anime también posee muy buenos estilos de dibujo, trazos y animación que resaltan muy bien, sobre todo al momento de darnos vistas o planos muy bien diseñados. La manera en la que juegan con los colores, los trazos y muchos otros detalles me gusta bastante. También vemos que tiene cierta fluidez que resalta en ciertos momentos del anime. Los efectos visuales que utilizan se ven demasiado bien y logran resaltar algunos escenarios. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos de sonido que tiene. La banda sonora es una excelencia de principio a fin, incluyendo su excelente Opening y su emocionante Ending. En fin, aquí les dejo un anime que puede llegar a interesarte.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance, comedia y drama.
