Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to a modern world where humanity lives in harmony with supernatural beings, such as vampires. At a high school attended by students of all races, there is a young girl who has become very popular because she is a vampire with a cold and mysterious personality. Her name is Luna Ishikawa, and one of her classmates, the quietest and most antisocial boy in the class, Tatsuta Ōtori, introduces her to us in his monologue. However, one day, Ōtori discovers that Ishikawa doesn’t know how to bite or suck blood like other vampires do.

I don't usually talk about this kind of anime because they're so absurdly innocent, despite all the supernatural and romantic elements they might have. Because, yes, I ended up watching this particular anime because it had this mix of genres, which isn't all that uncommon. But I still expected to see something more special or romantic than what I ultimately saw here. I’m not saying I didn’t like it in the end, because if that were the case, I wouldn’t have bothered writing this review. I’ll just say that I ended up finding it quite boring and childish compared to what I expected to see in the end.
One of the reasons for this is its main plot, which revolves around the life of the young and popular school vampire, Luna Ishikawa. After Tatsuta Ōtori discovers that Luna doesn’t know how to drink blood like a normal vampire, he promises to teach her while offering himself so she can “practice” drinking blood and feed at the same time. Because, as a vampire, she needs blood to feed and regain her energy. She isn’t like other living beings who can feed on food in this world, but that’s not all.
Normalmente no suelo hablar de este tipo de animes por lo absurdamente inocentes que son, fuera de todo lo sobrenatural y romántico que pueden llegar a ser. Porque si, llegué a ver este anime en particular porque tenía esta mezcla de géneros, lo cual no es tan poco común. Pero igualmente esperaba ver algo más especial o romántico de lo que al final llegué a ver aquí. No digo que no me haya gustado al final, porque si fuera así no me hubiese tomado la molestia de hacerle ésta reseña. Solo diré que me terminó pareciendo bastante aburrido e infantil de lo que esperaba ver al final.
Una de las razones de esto es su trama principal, la cual gira en torno a la vida de la joven y popular vampiresa de la escuela Luna Ishikawa. Luego de que Tatsuta Ōtori descubriese que Luna no sabe chupar sangre como un vampiro normal, este le hace la promesa de enseñarle mientras se ofrece a sí mismo para así poder “practicar” chupar sangre y a su vez ella pueda alimentarse al mismo tiempo. Porque, al ser una vampira, necesita de sangre para alimentarse y recuperar energías. No es como los demás seres vivos que se pueden alimentar de comida en este mundo, pero no todo queda aquí.

As one of the most popular girls in her school, her biggest dilemma is the fear that the truth—that she doesn’t know how to drink blood—will be exposed to everyone. Or rather, the latter refers more to a happy and fun teenage life than to that of a middle or high school student. This point is key because, as the episodes progress, we discover that Luna wasn’t always the way she is at school; she used to be an antisocial girl as well.
Al ser una de las chicas más populares de su escuela, el dilema mayor está en que se revele ante el público la verdad de que no sabe chupar sangre. Otra cosa a destacar también de Luna es su personalidad, la cual cambia por completo cuando entra en confianza con Tatsuta después de revelarle sus secretos. Él mismo descubre, por cierto, que toda la personalidad que tiene ante el público como la chica cool y fría de la escuela es en realidad una fachada, una imitación de un personaje de su manga favorito. Debido a esto, Luna se avergüenza de haber revelado sus secretos, pero no todo es malo al final.
Como ya pudieron leer bien, toda la trama que se desenvuelve en estos doce episodios de anime tratan de nuestra protagonista, Luna Ishikawa, quien trata de aprender a chupar sangre como un vampiro normal mientras consigue mantener sus secretos ante el público y vivir una vida de adolescente “normal”. O bueno, esto último se refiere más a una vida de adolescente feliz y divertida que a una estudiante de secundaria/preparatoria. Este punto es clave porque, con el paso de los episodios, descubrimos que Luna no siempre fue así como es en la escuela, sino que antes también era una chica asocial.

This is the only positive thing we can take away from this school comedy-fantasy anime: its message and the lesson it ultimately teaches. That message relates to the lives of teenagers—especially students—who are constantly interacting with others and putting on a front to avoid being teased by their peers. Unfortunately, we don’t see anything related to bullying in this anime; as I mentioned above, the story is quite childish. We basically see a protagonist who is popular at school, but who secretly turns out to be a different person.
Or rather, it’s not so much the difference in personality, but the flaws and problems Luna faces as a vampire who doesn’t know how to bite or suck blood. Given her cold and mysterious personality—which her classmates even idolize—this flaw of hers could potentially cause the idealized image people have of her to crumble completely. While this doesn’t happen in the end, we do notice certain changes and some development in her personality and the way others treat her.
Esto es lo único bueno que podemos extraer de este anime de comedia y fantasía escolar: su mensaje y lección final. Dicho mensaje está relacionado con la vida de los adolescentes y más de los que son estudiantes, los cuales siempre tienen que estar relacionándose con otros y mantener las apariencias para no recibir burlas de sus compañeros. Lamentablemente no vemos nada relacionado al bullying en este anime, como ya les dije arriba, es bastante infantil la historia que vemos. Prácticamente vemos a una protagonista que es popular en la escuela, pero que web secreto demuestra ser otra persona.
O bueno, no es tanto la diferencia de personalidad, sino los defectos y problemas que tiene Luna al ser una vampira que no sabe morder ni chupar sangre. Para su personalidad fría y misteriosa que es ante el resto de sus compañeros de clase que hasta llegan a idolatrar, inclusive; este defecto suyo puede ser incluso un medio para que dicha personalidad idealizada que tiene la gente sobre ella se derrumbe por completo. Si bien esto no sucede al final, sí podemos notar ciertos cambios y cierto desarrollo en su personalidad y la forma en la que los demás la tratan.

In the end, amidst all the comedic scenes and innocent jokes in this anime, the lesson it leaves us with is clear: it’s never a good idea to idealize the people you admire too much. Another important lesson might be to be yourself and not worry about what others say or think about you. In the end, pretending to be someone completely different from who you really are doesn’t always end well. But anyway, the main point of all this is to appreciate the charm of this anime’s protagonist, Luna Ishikawa herself. She isn’t that different from other protagonists in school and teen anime.
Aside from the lack of Fanservice, Luna’s personality isn’t that different from that of any other female lead in any school comedy anime. Most of them always have similar backstories, character development, and personalities. Luna doesn’t really stand out, beyond the fact that she’s a vampire who doesn’t know how to drink blood and who, apparently, didn’t have a normal childhood or adolescence. However, I think she was missing something else that would have really made her stand out as a protagonist.
Al final, entre tantas escenas cómicas y bromas inocentes que tiene este anime, la lección que nos deja al final es clara: nunca es bueno idealizar de más a las personas que admiras. Otra lección importante puede ser la de ser tú mismo y no preocuparte por lo que digan y opinen los demás sobre tí. Al final, el simular ser una persona completamente diferente a lo que realmente eres no siempre termina bien Pero bueno, lo principal de todo esto es conocer el carisma que posee la protagonista de este anime, la misma Luna Ishikawa. No es tan diferente a otras protagonistas de todo anime escolar y adolescente.
Exceptuando el Fanservice que no tiene, la personalidad de Luna no es tan distinta a la de cualquier otra protagonista femenina de cualquier anime de comedia estudiantil. La mayoría siempre tienen cierta historia, desarrollo y personalidad similares entre sí. Luna no llega a destacarse, más allá del hecho de ser una vampira que no sabe chupar sangre y que, aparentemente, no ha tenido una infancia o adolescencia común y corriente. Sin embargo creo que le faltó algo más que terminase de llamar la atención como protagonista.

But then again, you can't expect much from an anime that's primarily a comedy. Most of the episodes and settings are just your typical Japanese school story scenarios, with the only twist being the inclusion of certain supernatural characters. There’s also that absurd amount of innocent, almost childish comedy that ends up turning me off by the end. While I found a joke or two entertaining, the same can’t be said for the rest of the episodes and funny moments it has. I don’t know, I just don’t really like its style of comedy and jokes as such.
But hey, this is mostly my fault for having a sense of humor that’s a bit more edgy than this anime’s. I kept watching it until the end of its run because of the story involving Luna and the supposed romance I thought she had. I’ll warn you in advance, without giving any spoilers, not to expect much romance in this anime since it’s pretty scarce. It’s as if they prioritized the whole Luna storyline—with her complex about not knowing how to suck blood and her school life—over her relationship with Tatsuta. Although I admit that the latter does see some development, it’s not enough.
Pero bueno, tampoco hay que esperar mucho de un anime que principalmente es comedia como tal. La mayoría de episodios y escenarios son solo los típicos escenarios de una historia escolar de Japón, solo con el detalle de poseer ciertos personajes sobrenaturales. También que está esa cantidad absurda de comedia inocente y casi infantil que me termina de desagradar al final. Si bien me entretuvo uno que otro chiste, al final no ocurre igual con el resto de episodios y momentos graciosos que posee. No sé, no me terminan de agradar su estilo de comedia y chistes como tal.
Pero bueno, esto es más culpa mía por tener un sentido del humor un poco más fuerte de lo que tiene este anime. Me quedé viéndolo hasta el final de su emisión debido a su historia relacionada con Luna y el supuesto romance que creí yo que tenía. De antemano les aviso ya, sin darles ningún spoiler, que no esperen mucho romance como tal en este anime ya que escasea bastante. Es como si le dieran más prioridad a todo el tema de Luna con su complejo por no saber chupar sangre y su vida escolar que su relación con Tatsuta. Aunque admito que esto segundo sí tiene algo de desarrollo, no es suficiente.

Last but not least, let’s talk about the visual and audio aspects of Li’l Miss Vampire Can’t Suck Right. I don’t have anything against the animation in this series either; I just want to highlight certain details, such as the animation style it uses. That animation or art style (whether or not it’s faithful to the manga, I don’t know) is a bit simple—or “chibi,” to put it another way. Its animation, just like its sense of humor, is pretty childish for my taste, to be honest. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad, since it maintains a consistent style from start to finish, while also preserving certain visual details.
They also don’t resort to CGI or computer-generated animation, which is something I really appreciate. The visual and motion effects are as basic as they come, but it’s not as bad as people say. The character design is fine, though they don’t stand out as much as one might expect, to be honest. The sound effects also stand out in their own way, just like the animation does, with mostly simple sounds. The soundtrack doesn’t stand out as much as you’d expect either, which is normal. Here’s a comedy anime that might interest you.
Personally, I give it a 7/10 rating in terms of the comedy, supernatural, and romance genres.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene Li'l Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right. No tengo nada en contra de la animación de esta serie tampoco, solo que destacar ciertos detalles como lo es el estilo de animación que maneja. Dicha animación o arte (sea fiel o no al manga, no lo sé), es un tanto sencilla o “chibi”, mejor dicho. Su animación, al igual que su estilo de humor, es bastante infantil para mí gusto, la verdad. Pero esto no significa que sea malo, ya que mantiene un estilo establecido de inicio a fin, además de mantener ciertos detalles visuales.
No recurren tampoco al CGI o la animación hecha por computadora, lo cual es algo que aprecio mucho. Los efectos visuales y de movimiento son de lo más básico que podemos ver, pero tampoco es tan malo como se dice. El diseño de los personajes está bien, aunque no destacan tanto como uno esperaría, la verdad. Los efectos de sonido también destacan a su manera, al igual que lo hace la animación, con sonidos mayormente sencillos. La banda sonora tampoco destaca tanto como se esperaría, lo cual es normal. Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia, sobrenatural y romance.
