Hello, anime fans. Today I’m bringing you another little-known anime that aired (in the past, just to clarify for some readers) at the end of last year. A romantic comedy very different from anything I’ve seen so far, it caught my attention right from the start for a variety of reasons. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Mamakari, Plus-Sized Misadventures In Love is an animated adaptation produced by the studio Marvy Jack. Una comedia romántica muy diferente a todo lo que he llegado a ver hasta ahora y que ha llamado mucho mi atención desde el principio debido a diferentes razones. Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to a plus-size young woman who has been bullied since her school days—and even at home—because of her appearance. After a couple of flashbacks, we see her suddenly wake up in a hospital with her head bandaged and no memory of what happened. This young woman’s name is Yumeko Kōda, and since she woke up, her personality has completely changed, shifting from cold and depressed to cheerful and quite positive. Both the doctor and her mother tell her that she suffered a serious fall, which was caused by an [alleged] suicide attempt. Confused, she asks for a mirror to look at herself, to which her frazzled mother hands her her phone.

El anime inicia mostrándonos a una joven mujer de talla grande que ha sufrido de bullying desde que estudiaba en la escuela e incluso en su casa debido a su físico. Después de un par de flashbacks, vemos cómo despierta de repente en un hospital con la cabeza vendada y sin recordar nada. Esta joven se llama Yumeko Kōda y, desde que despertó, su personalidad cambió por completo, pasando de ser fría y depresiva a alegre y bastante positiva. I won’t deny that I found the way this anime starts a little strange, but as I watched the first episode, a couple of things really caught my attention and had me hooked. As I’m sure you already know, I usually watch a lot of romantic comedy animes, which are almost always on the air—if anything, the opposite is true. What caught my attention about this particular anime is just how different it is compared to other modern RomComs. Aside from the obvious choice of protagonist, let’s start with the story, which features a very unique blend of comedy, drama, and a touch of romance.
While many platforms market it as a romantic comedy, I personally consider it a dramatic comedy. And I’m not making this claim for no reason, since the story is about a young office worker who has suffered constant bullying since she was a child because of her appearance. After a serious accident, our protagonist, Yumeko Kōda, loses her memory and her personality changes completely, transforming from someone depressed into someone more cheerful and positive. Upon seeing herself reflected on her cell phone screen, Kōda declares that she is absolutely beautiful, leaving the people around her—especially her mother—in shock.
No voy a negar que me pareció un poco extraño cómo inicia este anime, pero conforme llegué a ver su primer episodio, me terminó de enganchar un par de cosas que me llamaron mucho la atención. Como supongo que saben ya, suelo ver muchos animes de comedia romántica, los cuales en emisión casi nunca faltan, sino más bien todo lo contrario. Lo que me llamó la atención de este anime en particular es lo diferente que llega a ser en comparación con los demás animes RomCom de la actualidad. Aparte de lo evidente que sería su protagonista, partamos primero por su historia, la cual posee una mezcla muy peculiar de comedia con drama y algo de romance.
Si bien muchas plataformas la hacen pasar como una comedia romántica, yo en lo personal considero que es una comedia dramática. Y no es por nada que haga esta afirmación debido a que dicha historia trata de una joven oficinista que ha sufrido de bullying constante desde que era niña debido a su físico. Luego de un grave accidente, nuestra protagonista, Yumeko Kōda, pierde la memoria y cambia por completo su personalidad, pasando de ser depresiva a alguien más alegre y positiva. Al verse a sí misma reflejada en la pantalla de su celular, Kōda afirma que es hermosísima, haciendo que la gente de su alrededor, especialmente su madre, se queden en shock.

Now, the interesting thing about all this isn’t the mental and emotional state of our protagonist—who also suffers from amnesia—but rather what is gradually revealed about her incident as the episodes unfold. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say that this so-called “suicide attempt” isn’t quite what it seems; it was actually something much more serious. By suggesting that it may have been an attempted murder, both Yumeko and Inspector Maezono Tsueki—who is in charge of her case—and his partner will have to investigate further into what happened on the day of the incident.
As you’ve just read, this anime isn’t just pure slapstick comedy with romance and drama; it also has its fair share of mystery surrounding everything related to Yumeko’s incident. Obviously, what catches your attention the most at first is the protagonist’s personality, which, after the incident and her memory loss, changes completely—she becomes a hyperactive girl with incredible self-esteem and a positivity that’s almost absurd to watch. Her new way of being, speaking, and even dressing catches the attention of both the characters we meet in the anime and all of us watching it.
Ahora, lo interesante de todo esto no es el estado mental y emocional de nuestra protagonista, quien también sufre de amnesia, sino más bien lo que se nos va revelando sobre su incidente con el paso de los siguientes episodios. Para no darles ningún spoiler, solo les diré que ese supuesto “intento de suicidio” no es tan cierto como se cree, sino que fue algo mucho más grave. Al afirmar que posiblemente haya sido un intento de homicidio, tanto Yumeko como el inspector Maezono Tsueki -quien está encargado de su caso- y su compañero, tendrán que investigar más sobre lo que sucedió en ese día del incidente.
Como acaban de leer, este anime no solo es pura comedia pesada con romance y drama, sino que también tiene hasta su ración de misterio con todo lo relacionado al incidente de Yumeko. Obviamente, lo que más llama la atención al principio es la personalidad de la protagonista, quien luego del incidente y la pérdida de memoria, cambia por completo siendo una chica hiperactiva y con una increíble autoestima y una positividad que es hasta absurdo de ver. Su nueva forma de ser, hablar y hasta de vestirse llama tanto la atención de todos los personajes que vamos conociendo en el anime como de todos los que lo vemos.

In my case, I have to admit that I found it quite entertaining, especially because of the way it blends humor with drama and mystery in such a fascinating way. The sense of humor here is very different from what you might see in other romantic comedy anime. Starting with the typical “fat jokes” you often see, they also use irony or absurdly exaggerated dialogue to make us laugh every now and then. From the get-go, Yumeko is portrayed as the anime’s “laughingstock,” but as the episodes unfold, we see some character development and a deeply moving narrative arc that makes us empathize with her in a certain way.
There’s a lot to say about Yumeko and the new side of her we get to know in this anime, but what really gives us food for thought is what we gradually discover about her past and her issues with her former classmates, her current coworkers, and even her own family. The way she faces and resolves each problem responsibly and somewhat creatively also stands out, as we see that she doesn’t rely on anyone else to prove she’s good at what she loves. Furthermore, she backs up her character and her words with those actions, which is also admirable.
En mi caso, admito que me entretuvo bastante, sobre todo por esa forma de mezclar el humor con el drama y el misterio de una forma fascinante. El sentido del humor aquí es muy diferente a lo que se puede llegar a ver en otros animes de comedia romántica. Empezando por los típicos “chistes de gordos” que se puede ver, también utilizan la ironía o los diálogos absurdamente exagerados para hacernos reír de vez en cuando. Ya de por sí, Yumeko nos la pintan como “el hazmerreír” del anime, pero es con el paso de los episodios que vemos cierto desarrollo y todo un arco narrativo bien profundo y sentido que nos hace empatizar de cierto modo con ella.
Se pueden decir muchas cosas de Yumeko y su nueva personalidad que vamos conociendo en este anime, pero más da de qué pensar lo que descubrimos poco a poco sobre su pasado y sus problemas con sus antiguos compañeros de clase, sus actuales compañeros de trabajo y hasta sus propios familiares. La forma en la que ella afronta y resuelve cada problema de manera responsable y un tanto creativa también llama la atención ya que vemos que no depende de nadie para demostrar ser buena en lo que le gusta. Además, defiende su forma de ser y sus palabras con dichas acciones, lo cual es digno de admirar también.

But what I think is key in all of this is the valuable lesson this story teaches us about having self-confidence, not letting yourself be swayed by others’ opinions, and pursuing your own dreams without ever giving up. Yes, all of this might sound a bit cliché, but the way this anime conveys it through Yumeko’s story is truly worth considering. Obviously, what we’ll see most is how our protagonist always draws attention, doing and saying things that simply won’t leave you indifferent. You might like her, or her quips and the way she sees herself and the world around her might make you burst out laughing.
Yumeko’s personality might lead us to think this anime lacks any touch of realism or drama, but that’s when, suddenly, it presents scenes and moments that show us that’s not the case. This contrast between the colorful, bright side we see with Yumeko and the dark, dense, and heavy side we see with other characters we’ll meet in this anime is also quite fascinating. Another thing I really like is how the series gives us various hints, settings, and clues about what happened in that incident involving Yumeko. While it’s not much, the mystery we see in this anime just makes you want to watch it all the way to the end.
Pero lo que creo que es clave en todo esto es la lección valiosa que nos deja esta historia sobre tener confianza en uno mismo, no dejarte llevar por las opiniones de los demás y seguir tus propios sueños sin rendirte nunca. Si, todo esto puede llegar a sonar un poco cliché, pero la forma en la que nos lo enseña este anime con el caso de Yumeko es digno de consideración, la verdad. Obviamente, lo que más veremos es cómo nuestra protagonista llama siempre la atención, hace y dice cosas que simplemente no te dejarán indiferente. Puede que te agrade o que te dé un ataque de risa por sus ocurrencias y su forma de verse a sí mismas y al mundo que la rodea.
Puede que dicha personalidad que tiene Yumeko nos haga pensar que este anime no tiene ningún toque de realismo o drama, pero es aquí cuando, de repente, te saca escenas y momentos donde vemos que no es así. Esta disparidad entre el lado colorido y luminoso que vemos con Yumeko en contraste con el lado oscuro, denso y pesado que vemos con otros personajes que iremos conociendo en este anime también fascina bastante. Now, as for the romance we see in this anime, it doesn’t really stand out as much as one might expect. Obviously, given everything mentioned above, there are certain clichés or elements that simply don’t happen here, but which are common in other RomCom animes. For example, the relationship that develops between Yumeko Kōda and Yuuki Keisuke can be somewhat special, in a way. However, in the end, and after several revelations about that incident, this character we just mentioned goes from being a romantic prospect for the protagonist to a possible accomplice in an attempted murder.
But anyway, without giving away too many spoilers, I’ll just say that every character we meet in this anime has two sides that we’ll uncover throughout the series. This shows us that even our own friends or close coworkers can also be our worst enemies. This contrast between human light and darkness is something I really enjoy seeing in dramatic animes like this, to be honest. However, let’s not forget that it’s primarily a comedy anime, so if you’re expecting drama all the time, you might be a little disappointed. But if you’re looking for something to entertain you, then this anime is perfect for you.
Ahora, en cuanto al romance que llegamos a ver en este anime es algo que no llega a destacarse tanto como uno esperaría. Obviamente, debido a todo lo que se ha mencionado arriba, hay ciertos clichés o cosas que simplemente no suceden aquí, pero que sí suelen pasar en cualquier otro anime RomCom. Por ejemplo, la relación que forma Yumeko Kōda con Yuuki Keisuke puede llegar a ser un tanto especial, en cierto modo. Sin embargo, al final y luego de varias revelaciones que se hacen sobre dicho incidente, este personaje que acabamos de mencionar pasa a ser de un prospecto amoroso para la protagonista a un posible cómplice de intento de homicidio.

Este contraste entre la luz y la oscuridad humana es algo que me gusta mucho ver en animes dramáticos como éstos, la verdad. Sin embargo, no olvidemos que es, principalmente, un anime de comedia, por lo cual si esperas drama todo el tiempo entonces puede que te decepciones un poco. Pero si lo que buscas es algo para entretenerte entonces este anime es perfecto para tí.

Last but not least, let’s talk about the visual and audio aspects of this anime. Produced by a seemingly new and relatively unknown studio, this animated adaptation isn’t as bad as many might think. Starting with the animation, it’s mostly comical, somewhat detailed, and occasionally a bit inconsistent. It features familiar art styles and somewhat striking character designs, particularly Yumeko Kōda’s design, for example. The color palette also stands out for how colorful, bright, and eye-catching it can be. In contrast, they also make excellent use of light and shadow, as well as dark and cool tones.
The art direction is excellent, as far as can be appreciated in this anime. Starting with the way they use certain audiovisual elements to show us the difference between how our protagonist sees the world and how others see it. The dialogue and sound effects aren’t bad either; in fact, they manage to catch our attention or even entertain us. The visual effects aren’t the standout feature of this anime, but they do get a bit over-the-top during comedic moments. The soundtrack is excellent as well, especially the Opening and Ending themes. Anyway, here’s a hidden gem of an anime that might interest you.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the comedy, drama, romance, and mystery genres.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. A cargo de un estudio aparentemente nuevo y nada conocido, esta adaptación animada no está tan mal como muchos pueden llegar a opinar. Empezando por la animación, siendo mayormente cómica, un tanto detallada y a veces algo variable. Con estilos de dibujos ya conocidos y diseños de personajes un tanto llamativos, en especial por el diseño de Yumeko Kōda, por ejemplo. La paleta de colores también llama la atención debido a lo colorida, brillante y llamativa que puede llegar a ser. En contraste, también utilizan muy bien las luces y sombras, además de los tonos oscuros y fríos.
La dirección artística es excelente, hasta lo que se puede llegar a apreciar en este anime. Empezando por la forma en la que utilizan ciertos elementos audiovisuales para mostrarnos la diferencia entre la forma de ver el mundo que tiene nuestra protagonista y cómo lo ven los demás. Los diálogos y los efectos de sonido tampoco están tan mal, en cambio, llegan a llamar la atención o entretenernos, incluso. Los efectos visuales no son lo más destacable de este anime, pero sí llegan a exagerar un poco en momentos de humor. La banda sonora es excelente también, sobre todo por su Opening y Ending. En fin, aquí les dejo una joya escondida del anime que pueda interesarte.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia, drama, romance y misterio.
