[ESP/ENG] Los viejos tiempos del anime | The Older Days of Anime

Hola de nuevo! Hoy les traigo un post súper genial por motivo del concurso semanal de @OCD que pueden leer con más detalle aquí esta vez para la comunidad The Anime Realm, una comunidad hecha primordialmente para los amantes de anime y el manga. Como sabrán he dedicado muchos posts a diferentes temas del anime, preguntas frecuentes, tops y análisis de series puntuales, pero hoy le abriremos las puertas a la nostalgia para hablar de los viejos tiempos del anime, cosa que me emociona porque me encanta revivir momentos de mi infancia e historias que me contaba mi papá de cuando veía sus "series japonesas" como él las llama y todos los animes clásicos que descubrí a lo largo de mi vida.

Hello again! Today I bring you a super cool post for @OCD's weekly contest that you can read in more detail here this time for The Anime Realm community, a community made primarily for anime and manga lovers. As you may know I have dedicated many posts to different anime topics, frequently asked questions, tops and analysis of specific series, but today we will open the doors to nostalgia to talk about the old days of anime, something that excites me because I love to relive moments of my childhood and stories that my dad told me when he watched his "Japanese series" as he calls them and all the classic anime that I discovered throughout my life.

Anteriormente el anime no era tan famoso como lo es actualmente, esa rama de la cultura japonesa fue poco a poco llegando a esta parte del mundo donde actualmente disfrutamos de series como Boku no Hero, Black Clover, Kimetsu no Yaiba, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Shingeki no Kyojin, etc, con animaciones increíbles que dejan sorprendidos y que antes eran prácticamente imposibles de hacer, sin embargo, esos viejos animes nos traen una nostalgia y felicidad indiscutible, además de que actualmente se les denomina como animes de "estilo vintage" y que inspiraron a muchos animes de la actualidad a ser lo que son ahora. Realmente muchos animes tuvieron su gran popularidad en la década de los 80s y 90s dando a conocer ese estilo de animación al mundo entero y hoy hablaremos de los clásicos que marcaron historia en el anime.

Previously anime was not as famous as it is today, that branch of Japanese culture was gradually coming to this part of the world where we currently enjoy series like Boku no Hero, Black Clover, Kimetsu no Yaiba, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Shingeki no Kyojin, etc., with incredible animations that leave us surprised and that before were practically impossible to do, however, those old anime bring us an undeniable nostalgia and happiness, besides they are currently called "vintage style" anime and inspired many anime of today to be what they are now. Actually many animes had their big popularity in the 80s and 90s making this animation style known to the whole world and today we will talk about the classics that marked history in anime.

Recuerdo que de niña me sentaba al lado de mi papá frente al televisor (uno de esos grandes y cuadrados) a ver Caballeros del Zodiaco en un canal de mi país llamado "Televen", el cual mi papá no se perdía nunca y que yo disfrutaba a pesar de no entender nada porque era una niña muy pequeña. Luego seguía Candy Candy, una serie adorable que veía mi mamá y que para mí solo era una historia de amor. Mi papá me contaba sobre el éxito que tuvo Mazinger Z en los años 70s en Estados Unidos cuando él vivía ahí, ya que cuando terminaba de hacer sus tareas encendía su antiguo televisor y colocaba el canal donde transmitían ese anime. También me habló sobre otras series como Astroboy, Ultraman y Super Agente Cobra, animes que actualmente son clásicos y que se podían obtener en formato de VHS. En ese entonces el formato era cuadrado y no rectangular como la actualidad, además de que los fotogramas no iban tan rápido como ahora, pero la historia y el estilo de esas series eran muy interesantes.

I remember as a child I used to sit next to my dad in front of the TV (one of those big and square ones) watching Saint Seiya on a channel in my country called "Televen", which my dad never missed and which I enjoyed even though I didn't understand anything because I was a very little girl. Then followed Candy Candy, an adorable series that my mom used to watch and that for me was just a love story. My dad would tell me about the success that Mazinger Z had in the 70s in the United States when he lived there, because when he finished doing his homework he would turn on his old TV and put on the channel where that anime was broadcasted. He also told me about other series such as Astroboy, Ultraman and Super Agent Cobra, anime that are now classics and were available in VHS format. Back then the format was square and not rectangular like today, plus the frames were not as fast as they are now, but the story and style of those series were very interesting.

A partir de finales de los 90s, comienzos de la década el 2000 tuve mi propio cuarto junto con un pequeño televisor de pantalla cuadrada, con muchos canales entre ellos Cartoon Network y Locomotion. Una serie que me encantó MUCHÍSIMO fue Pokémon, ya que me envicié con la primera generación y tenía mi pequeña colección de juguetes de algunos Pokemones. En ese tiempo no era tan popular el anime y en donde me desenvolvía solo lo niños varones eran los que veían esas series. Sin embargo, eso no me detenía a ver comiquitas increíbles. Dragon Ball fue amor a primera vista y de hecho creo que hasta nuestras abuelitas saben quién es Gokú, y aunque fue estrenada en los 80s tuve la oportunidad de verla cuando yo tenía unos 6 años de edad. No saben la emoción que me causaba cantar las intros de Dragon Ball como "vamos a buscar, las esferas de Dragón, es el secreto más estremecedor" y casi gritar la canción "CHALAAAA HEAD CHALAAAAA", y como dato curioso mis padres se saben todos los openings de Dragon Ball gracias a mí porque los cantaba muchísimo cuando era niña. También recuerdo cuando alzaba las manos para ayudar a Gokú a hacer una Genkidama, cosa que todos hicimos en nuestra infancia. Quiero destacar que estos animes que me apasionaban de niña los vi en doblaje español latino, por lo que a veces se me hace algo incómodo escucharlos en el idioma original jajaja.

From the late 90s, early 2000s I had my own room along with a small square screen TV, with many channels among them Cartoon Network and Locomotion. One series that I loved VERY MUCH was Pokémon, as I was enamored with the first generation and had my own small toy collection of some Pokémon. At that time anime was not so popular and where I lived only boys were the ones who watched those series. However, that didn't stop me from watching awesome comics. Dragon Ball was love at first sight and in fact I think even our grandmothers know who Goku is, and although it was released in the 80s I had the opportunity to watch it when I was about 6 years old. You don't know how excited I was singing the Dragon Ball intros like "let's go look for the Dragon balls, it's the most thrilling secret" and almost shouting the song "CHALAAAAAA HEAD CHALAAAAAAA", and as a curious fact my parents know all the Dragon Ball openings thanks to me because I used to sing them a lot when I was a child. I also remember when I would raise my hands to help Goku do a Genkidama, something we all did in our childhood. I want to point out that I watched these anime that I loved as a child in Spanish dubbing, so sometimes it's a little uncomfortable to listen to them in the original language hahaha.

Luego llegó One Piece y Naruto a finales de los 90s. Lamentablemente aquí en Latinoamérica One Piece tuvo una pésima adaptación que incluso a mí me disgustó de niña pero no por los dibujos, sino por el mal doblaje que le hicieron, tuvo una recepción pésima. Con Naruto fue otra historia, ya que fue un éxito y veía a mis compañeros de primaria intentar hacer un rasengan o lanzar papeles como si fueran kunais. Llegó Yuyu Hakusho, Sakura Card Captor, Trigun, Bleach, Ranma 1/2, Samurai X, Sailor Moon y otros más que se podían obtener por VHS, pero que prefería ver en Cartoon Network o Locomotion que luego pasó a ser Animax. Habían muchos otros animes que me llamaban la atención pero no los entendía muy bien hasta que me me hice más grande. Podría decir que mi infancia estuvo llena de anime además de otras comiquitas más que cualquier niño veía.

Then came One Piece and Naruto at the end of the 90s. Unfortunately here in Latin America One Piece had a terrible adaptation that even I disliked as a child, but not because of the drawings, but because of the bad dubbing, it had a terrible reception. With Naruto it was a different story, since it was a hit and I used to see my elementary school classmates trying to make a rasengan or throw papers as if they were kunais. Along came Yuyu Hakusho, Sakura Card Captor, Trigun, Bleach, Ranma 1/2, Samurai X, Sailor Moon and more that were available on VHS, but I preferred to watch on Cartoon Network or Locomotion which later became Animax. There were many other anime that caught my attention but I didn't understand them very well until I got older. I could say that my childhood was full of anime and other cartoons that any kid would watch.

Al crecer comencé a variar y a ver otras cosas, sin embargo me conseguí con los antiguos animes que veía más otros que no conocía. Animes como Neon Genesis Evangenlion que marcaron un antes y un después en cuanto a trama psicológica se refiere, también creando mi opening favorito hasta la fecha. Cowboy Bebop, mi anime favorito creado en 1998 con una trama futurista que envuelve una realidad emocional entre los personajes y con un protagonista increíble. A su vez le di otra oportunidad a One Piece y valió muchísimo la pena. También volví a ver animes que vi de niña como la maravillosa obra de Samurai X, el mundo de Trigun, el fabuloso anime de Sailor Moon, etc, para tener una visión un poco más madura de ellos y de verdad quedé sorprendida de lo profundo podían ser algunas tramas que obviamente de niña no captaba muy bien. Siento que los viejos tiempos del anime eran muy diferentes a los de ahora y que además, muchos animes actuales fueron inspirados en clásicos y así se va armando un gran legado que va evolucionando a medida que el tiempo avanza.

As I grew up I started to vary and watch other things, however I got myself with the old anime I watched plus others I didn't know. Animes like Neon Genesis Evangenlion that marked a before and after in terms of psychological plot, also creating my favorite opening to date. Cowboy Bebop, my favorite anime created in 1998 with a futuristic plot that involves an emotional reality between the characters and with an incredible protagonist. At the same time I gave One Piece another chance and it was so worth it. I also rewatched animes I watched as a child like the wonderful Samurai X, the world of Trigun, the fabulous Sailor Moon anime, etc, to have a more mature vision of them and I was really surprised of how deep some plots could be that obviously as a child I didn't understand very well. I feel that the old days of anime were very different from now and also, many current anime were inspired by classics and thus a great legacy is being built that evolves as time goes by.

Antes no era tan conocido el concepto de "anime" y lo conocían como unas "comiquitas chinas" cuando obviamente no era así, tampoco había tanta censura como ahora, habían chistes para adultos ocultos, escenas duras y además, emociones o aspectos que no todo niño entendería con tanta profundidad pero que igualmente se podía disfrutar con emoción. Además de que se puede ver la gran evolución en la animación japonesa yendo desde los 70s hasta la actualidad, como antes podían obtener las series por VHS o DVD y ahora las tienes a la mano grandes clásicos gracias a Netflix, Crunchyroll y otras plataformas que distribuyen series. Incluso la modalidad de dibujo va variando aunque obviamente cada anime tiene su propio estilo, pero que se va amoldando a los tiempos que avanzan. Ver un Naruto chiquito dibujado en Boruto no es lo mismo que el Naruto chiquito original de los 90s o el One Piece animado de los 90s no es igual al de la actualidad. Espero que el anime siga llegando a tanta gente como lo está haciendo ahora y que conozcan series clásicas, las cuales dieron pie a que se inspiraran muchísimos animes actuales.

Before the concept of "anime" was not so well known and it was known as a "Chinese cartoons" when obviously it was not so, there was not so much censorship as now, there were hidden adult jokes, hard scenes and also, emotions or aspects that not every child would understand with so much depth but could still be enjoyed with emotion. Besides that you can see the great evolution in Japanese animation going from the 70s to the present, as before you could get the series by VHS or DVD and now you have them at hand great classics thanks to Netflix, Crunchyroll and other platforms that distribute series. Even the drawing style is changing, although obviously each anime has its own style, but it is adapting to the times. Seeing a small Naruto drawn in Boruto is not the same as the original small Naruto of the 90s or the animated One Piece of the 90s is not the same as the current one. I hope that anime continues to reach as many people as it is doing now and that they get to know classic series, which inspired many of today's animes.

Escribir todo esto me recordó a los momentos en los que quería transformarme como en Sailor Moon, hacer un Kame Hame Ha como en Dragon Ball o intentar hacer un jutsu como en Naruto. ¡Qué bonito es recordar la infancia!

I hope you liked this post, it would be great to know your point of view about the old times of anime and the classics you know and the nice memories they left you. Writing all this reminded me of the times when I wanted to transform like in Sailor Moon, do a Kame Hame Ha like in Dragon Ball or try to do a jutsu like in Naruto. How nice to remember childhood!
