For some reason, I watch fantasy anime around August and it has low-key become a tradition. Last year, it was wistoria wand and swords and the year before, it was The legend of vox machina(speaking of which, we didn’t get a new season this year, aww snap.)
I started watching this show last week, The rising of the shield hero and it’s been good so far. Well asides that, I’m also rewatching ATLA(Avatar: The last air bender) for the 7th time and it’s just so magical. Oh and I’m about to start Pantheon, Ive heard great things about it so I’m taking a step and checking if it’s capable of dragging me in.

Now, for the plot of The rising of the shield hero. The anime revolves around a character namedNaofumi Iwatani. He gets summoned to another world as one of four legendary heroes tasked with stopping catastrophic events called Waves. While the other heroes get offensive weapons, Naofumi is stuck with a shield that can only defend. This already puts him at a disadvantage in a world that values strength and combat ability.
Things take a dark turn early on when someone close to the royal family makes serious accusations against Naofumi. The entire kingdom turns against him, leaving him isolated and branded as something he’s not. With no allies and barely any resources, he’s forced to make some morally questionable choices just to survive and fulfill his role as a hero.
Naofumi ends up with a small group of companions who have their own complicated backgrounds. There’s Raphtalia, who starts as someone with very little agency in her life, and Filo, who becomes part of his party under unusual circumstances. As they travel together, these relationships evolve in unexpected ways, and Naofumi slowly changes from who he was when he first arrived.
The story initially seems straightforward, heroes fighting monsters and saving the world, but it becomes clear that there are deeper political games being played. The other heroes have their own issues and blind spots, while certain members of the royal family are involved in schemes that go beyond simple court intrigue. What appeared to be random disasters are actually connected to something much larger.

As Naofumi uncovers more about this world and his situation, he discovers that the hero summoning system itself has layers he never suspected. There are connections to other worlds, other versions of heroes, and forces working behind the scenes that have been manipulating events for their own purposes. The truth about why heroes are really needed and what the Waves actually represent changes everything.
The story follows Naofumi’s transformation from an ordinary person thrust into an impossible situation into someone who has to decide what kind of hero, or person, he wants to be when the world seems determined to make him into something else.
