I just rewatched a pretty dark movie last Thursday, so yesterday, to somehow clear the clouds in my head, I decided to finally read this short manhwa on my recommendation list. I already started reading it earlier this year, but I decided to marinate it for months because I'm not really fond of anticipating. I let it sit on my to-finish list for several months until I decided to reread it yesterday. I thought the story would be longer, but I'm wrong because it turned out that it only has 30+ chapters. Enough with the introduction, let me share with you this cute and heartwarming manhwa about a child who braved a dangerous journey just to see the mom that he had been yearning to meet.
About the Manhwa
On the Way to Meet Mom is a manhwa that was written and illustrated by Gomyang. It was published last year, but it just got finished this year. It had a total of 31 chapters and it is a fantasy action with a considerable amount of drama. So this manhwa follows the life of Mori, a cute child who was rescued from an abandoned house. Since he kinda of grew up alone with wild animals, he adapted their actions. He got used to living in the dark, that's when he woke up in the shelter—he felt unfamiliar with all the things he saw and experienced.
However, he slowly adapts to it and it wasn't long when he got his first friend, Rowena. She introduces Mori to a lot of things, but just when they're already close, she confides to him that she will be leaving because her mom will be picking her back. When she left the shelter, Mori was left baffled and curious, because if Rowena had a mom, then it meant he also had one. But who could be his mom? The first thing that came to his mind was the mysterious sponsor who had been showering him with various gifts.
Determined to also meet his mom, Mori decided to find her by himself. That's why, when night came—armed with courage and hope, Mori escaped the shelter and embarked on a perilous journey to find her. Yet can he really find and meet his mom? Or will all his efforts be in vain?
It was definitely a wholesome manhwa, and I can't deny the fact that I enjoyed reading its entirety. I thought that this story would have a lot of dark moments since the premise of a child travelling alone easily made me imagine a lot of possible misfortunes and even tragedy coming. Yet, I'm glad that it wasn't riddled with those because one of the reasons why I read it because I wan't to cancel out the negative emotions I felt earlier that day, so I'm definitely thankful that it fed me enough wholesomeness. Anyway, its story wasn't particularly just about wholesome moments, but it also features issues that I didn't expect it would delve into.
As for its art style, I love how its artist draws Mori. He's so round and cute, and the way he's drawn in comic defensive like a cat position was just so adorable. It's funny and cute, and it fills me with a lot of positive emotions just by looking at his face. Further, I like how its artist portrayed the tender moments with Mori, Rider, and Miria. Their scenes together really fill my heart with nice feelings. And before I forget...the sceneries there were just so mesmerizing. It's like the artist wants me to feel how magical and beautiful their world, and indeed it succeeded.
Despite that it's light-hearted, it was still able to portray some serious situations with much care not to make the whole thing really heavy. Also, what makes it more fulfilling to read is because of the meaningful lessons I was able to get from it. Once again, this story reminded me that family knows no bounds. You don't need to be blood-related to feel compassion and connection with each other. Although, I can't really relate to the parenthood thingy, still seeing how the artist portrays it somehow made me realize how precious it is and also how hard it is to really define it in just words. Like the song goes, words don't come easy, and indeed this story made me realize how actions matter.
Perhaps the only downside of this manhwa is how it piqued my interest with the extraterrestrial creatures, but then those creatures weren't that much focused later on. I understand that this isn't their story, but come on...I really want at least side stories featuring them. Those creatures were just interesting because they act like humans, only that they look different. Anyway, I still enjoyed reading it despite that yearning was not fully sated. To sum it up, finishing this manhwa left me with positivity, that's why if you want to be overwhelmed with cuteness and positive emotions, then you definitely need to try reading On the Way to Meet Mom.
I think that would be all for today, minna-san~ I hope you enjoyed my sharing, and thank you for staying with me until here.
Janeeeee!
