Anime Series Masterpieces
The great thing about being a casual anime watcher is that it's just easy to select what are considered the best of the best masterpieces and watch those. When asking ChatGPT to list me some of them, Attack On Titan is always there along with Death Note. So the choice which one to watch next was pretty easy and I just needed to find the right time for it.
Attack On Titan Season 1 (7.8/10)
There are a total of 89 episodes along with 2 special final episodes which brings the total runtime at around 37 hours to complete Attack On Titan. The first season has 25 Episodes and was released in 2013 while it took 4 years before the 2nd season was released and the series concluded 10 years after it started.
The story takes place on an alternate version of earth where the land where the entire population lives is protected by different layers of walls which protected them from the Titals for hundreds of years. They don't know who build the walls or what the titans actually are and one day a colossal titan appears who managed to break one of the walls which is where the story starts.
The story mainly follows Eren Yeager who starts off as a young boy who wants to join the scouts who explore the world outside of the walls. During the initial attack in the first episode, his mother is eaten by one of the titans and he seeks revenge. His "Sister" Mikasa Ackerman who is deeply attacked to him, and his friend Armin Arlert who has a more strategic brain.
In the first season it plays out over multiple years where it starts with the initial attack followed by them joining the army and later on the scouts. It very much has an open ending without a major cliffhanger and it's eay to pick up with the 2nd season which has only 12 episodes later on.
World Building & Animation
One of the things that I really enjoyed in this series was the world building as it really takes you into the entire medieval setting of the city inside of the walls with the danger of the titans. The animation is good especially the action scenes but at the same time, often just images are used without much moving which makes it all less impressive. With Death note this was also the case but there, the entire plot made up for it fully. Overall, I really enjoyed my time spend inside of this world and it was really easy to keep watching without getting much of a fatigue during the 25 episdes. At the same time, despite enjoying the story, I never got that sense of 'this is just brilliant' which I got from watching Death Note.
Attack On Titan Season 1 Trailer
The fact that I watched the entire 1st season in just 2 days certainly says something good about Attack On Titan, but at the same time I never really got that same smile on my face thinking 'Oh my god, this is just really good' like I had while watching Death Note. After the 1st season, pretty much all the questions are left unanswered which makes me want to continue watching the next season. The fact that the 1st season is rated the lowest overall and the 2nd season which is only 12 episodes will most likely sooner than later make me continue watching.
Conclusion
I enjoyed this first season but so far, Attack on Tital hasn't fully lived up to the 'legendary masterpiece' status that it has everywhere. I'm rating it a solid 7.8/10 as it did capture me to pretty much binge watch all 25 episoides of the first season and making me kind of look forward to check the 2nd season.
