When I was younger than I am now, I tried to watch this anime, at that time I didn't know that many people consider it the best anime of all time, but this year, thanks to Netflix, I was able to finish watching it to give my opinion. This year, thanks to Netflix, I was able to finish watching it so I could proceed to give my opinion: Is Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood really the best Japanese audiovisual product of all time? That's the question I'll try to answer as I do a thorough analysis of each part that this title conforms, maybe I'll go for a more subjective aspect or maybe I'll take a more critical aspect. I have to clarify that I'm not much of a shonen watcher, the ones I've seen I can count on one hand but I know their clichés and clichés, so I'm apt in that respect. Add to that the fact that I have elitist tastes to the extent that most of the time I watch slice of lifes, I think I'll have an objective opinion on something I don't watch very often. Without further ado, let's start with the review.
Cuando tenía menos edad de la que tengo ahora intenté verme este anime, en aquel entonces no sabía eso de que mucha gente lo considera el mejor de todos los tiempos. Este año, gracias a Netflix pude terminar de verlo para proceder a dar mi opinión. ¿De verdad es Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood el mejor producto audiovisual japonés de todos los tiempos? Es la pregunta que trataré de responder mientras hago un minucioso análisis a cada parte que este título conforma, quizás me vaya por un aspecto más subjetivo o quizás tome un aspecto más crítico. Tengo que aclarar que no soy muy de ver shonens, los que he visto los puedo contar con una sola mano pero me sé de buenas a primeras sus tópicos y clichés, así que me veo apto en respecto a eso. Sumado a que poseo gustos elitistas al grado de la mayor parte del tiempo ver slice of lifes, creo que tendré una opinión objetiva sobre algo que no veo frecuentemente. Sin más dilación, comencemos con la reseña.
The series tells the story of the Elric brothers, who have committed at a young age the greatest taboo in the world of alchemy, making a circle of human transmutation to revive someone who has died. In the process Edward Elric will lose his right leg and his brother Alphonse will lose his body entirely, thus experiencing the law that governs their world, that of equivalent exchange: to create, something of equal value must be lost. Ed will sacrifice his left arm in order to bind Al's soul in a suit of armour, thus beginning the journey. The goal will be the search for the philosopher's stone in order to recover their precious bodies. A plot that seems complex but is splendidly handled, making it seem simple.
La serie nos narra la historia de los hermanos Elric, quienes han cometido a temprana edad el mayor tabú en el mundo de la alquimia, hacer un círculo de transmutación humana para revivir a alguien que ha fallecido. En el proceso Edward Elric perderá su pierna derecha y su hermano Alphonse perderá totalmente su cuerpo, experimentando así la ley que rige su mundo, la del intercambio equivalente: para crear, algo de igual valor debe perderse. Ed sacrificará su brazo izquierdo con tal de atar el alma de Al en una armadura, dando comienzo así a la travesía. El objetivo será la búsqueda de la piedra filosofal para así recuperar sus preciados cuerpos. Trama que parece compleja pero que es llevada de forma espléndida haciendo que parezca simple.
What is most striking during the viewing is the philosophy and mythology that is handled, due to how well constructed it is. We find situations where the viewer is urged to reflect on the use of the word of "God" to manipulate people, where people do not rethink what they do, following orders without having any criteria of their own due to the false promises that are impossible to fulfil offered to them by the Church. If you want to change something, do it yourself, you have two legs so keep walking until you find your way. The equivalent exchange provides us with many doubts throughout the adventure, even more so when we see the creator of this Law known as "The Truth", an entity that represents everything and at the same time nothingness. If you want to recover something that he took by doing his work, there must be a way to beat him.
Lo que más llega a impactar durante el visionado es la filosofía y mitología propia que se maneja, debido a lo bien construida que está. Encontrándonos situaciones donde se insta al espectador reflexionar ante el uso de la palabra de "Dios" para manipular a los pueblos, donde la gente no se replantea lo que hace, siguiendo órdenes sin tener un poco de criterio propio debido a las falsas promesas imposibles de cumplir que les ofrece la Iglesia. Si quieres cambiar algo, hazlo por ti mismo, tienes dos piernas así que sigue caminando hasta encontrar tu camino. El intercambio equivalente nos proporciona muchas dudas a lo largo de la aventura, más aún cuando vemos al creador de dicha Ley conocido como "La Verdad", un ente que representa el todo y a la vez la nada. Si se quiere recuperar algo que él se llevó ejerciendo su labor, deberá existir una forma de ganarle.
The mythology is quite realistic due to the way the environment of the fictitious country is developed, which despite being an invention, feels quite real. The country where everything takes place could count as another character, little by little we are told its history and we get to know it little by little. All its secrets, its different cultures and problems. We are facing a militarised state, the civilians don't have the power of democracy. There have been many wars, even to the point of asking for exterminations against a specific race. Alchemy is a science, it is used for all complicated work and is quite unknown in some regions of the country. The use of robotic prostheses that can be used as weapons gives a steampunk touch to the environment, with a city dedicated solely to these objects. It is a very realistic world.
La mitología es bastante realista debido a cómo se desarrolla el entorno que del país ficticio que se nos va mostrando, que a pesar de ser una invención resulta sentirse bastante real. El país donde transcurre todo podría contar como un personaje más, poco a poco se nos va contando su historia y lo vamos conociendo poco a poco. Todos sus secretos, sus diferentes culturas y problemáticas. Estamos ante un estado militarizado, los civiles no tienen el poderío de la democracia. Han transcurrido muchas guerras llegando a punto de pedir la realización de exterminios contra una raza en específico. La alquimia es una ciencia, la usan para todos los labores complicados y es bastante desconocida en algunas regiones del país. El uso de prótesis robóticas que pueden ser usadas como armas le da un toque steampunk al ambiente, habiendo una ciudad únicamente dedicada a estos objetos. Estamos ante un mundo muy real.
The characters are a great section to mention, no matter how many we are presented with, they all fulfil a function and have a background, an objective to fulfil, even the most insignificant one that you think will never appear again, does. They are small pieces that are presented to us that complete the puzzle. They are all endearing from the first appearance, some of them obviously more relevant than others. Mustang and his team, especially Riza, move a large part of the plot, helping to achieve the final objective. The Xing people are quite charismatic and even though they have the same goal as the main characters, they get along quite well. The Homunculi are magnificent, each representing a cardinal sin, they are the bad guys of this epic tale, although I want to highlight Greed and Envy, being absolutely the best because of what they get to represent. The female representation stands out quite a lot, being that the characters are strong and not sexualised at all, some are indispensable like Winry, the childhood friend of the Elrics or Olivier, the commander of Fort Briggs.
Los personajes son un gran apartado a mencionar, por muchosque se nos presenten todos cumplen una función y tienen un trasfondo, un objetivo a cumplir, hasta el más insignificante que crees que no volverá a aparecer, lo hace. Son pequeñas piezas que se nos van presentando que van completando un rompecabezas. Todos son entrañables desde la primera aparición, siendo algunos más relevantes que otros obviamente. Mustang y su equipo, destacando a Riza, mueven una gran parte de la trama ayudando a cumplir el objetivo final. La gente de Xing es bastante carismática y aunque tengan el mismo objetivo que los protagonistas, se llevan bastante bien. Los Homúnculos son magníficos, cada uno representando un pecado capital, son los malos de este cuento épico, aunque quiero destacar a Codicia y Envidia, siendo absolutamente los mejores debido a lo que llegan a representar. Resalta bastante la representación femenina, siendo que los personajes son fuertes y no están para nada sexualizados, algunos son indispensables como Winry, la amiga de la infancia de los Elrics o Olivier, la comandante del fuerte Briggs.
The animation is quite good, the battle scenes have a good rhythm, making them easy to follow, matching well with the soundtrack used for the occasion. A colour palette more in keeping with the manga is used, using more cheerful tones, as opposed to the 2003 version, where a darker and more gloomy approach was sought. What really stands out is the OST, it's impressive to see how all the openings and endings used in the series are almost perfect, it's very possible that each one of them will stick in your mind. I highlight above all Again by Yui and Shukan Sentimental by SCANDAL. Some people have watched FMAB because of the genius of the first opening, it's just crazy.
La animación cumple bastante con su objetivo, se podría considerar buena, las escenas de batallas cuentan con un buen ritmo, haciéndolas fácil de seguir, congeniando bien con el track de la banda sonora que se use para la ocasión. Se usa una paleta de colores más acorde al manga, usando tonalidades más alegre, en contrario a su versión del 2003, donde se buscaba dar un enfoque más oscuro y tétrico. Lo que de verdad destaca en demasía es el OST, es impresionante ver como todos los openings y endings que se usan en la serie son casi perfectos, es muy posible que cada uno de ellos se te quede grabado en la mente. Resalto por sobretodo Again de Yui y Shukan Sentimental de SCANDAL. Hay gente que se ha visto FMAB por la genialidad que conlleva el primer opening, es simplemente algo de locura.
In conclusion, this is one of the best works in anime. It is quite complete in all its sections, telling complex things in a simple way, showing a great diversity of characters that are quite charismatic and endearing, having in its power a powerful soundtrack leaving many enchanted, sometimes going out of its topic dealing with topics such as religion and wars. It is a title that everyone should see and that anyone could easily watch three times in a row feeling the emotions that are transmitted as if it were the first time, there are not many works that cause such a sensation. Perhaps the only point to criticise is the ending, which felt a little rushed in my opinion, although leaving all the ends tied up leaving a happy ending.
En conclusión, estamos ante una de las mejores obras en el anime. Es bastante completa en todos sus apartados, contando cosas complejas de forma sencilla, mostrando gran diversidad de personajes que son bastantes carismáticos y entrañables, teniendo en su poder una potente banda sonora dejando encantados a muchos, saliéndose algunas veces de su tópico tratando temas como la religión y las guerras. Es un título que todos deberían de ver y que fácilmente cualquiera podría ver tres veces seguidas sintiendo las emociones que se transmiten como si fuera la primera vez, no hay muchas obras que causen tal sensación. Quizás el único punto a criticar sea el final, que se sintió un poco apresurado en mi parecer, aunque dejando todos los cabos atados dejando un final feliz.
