Hoy les vengo con un gran descubrimiento, al menos para mí, ya que cuando lo vi llevaba muchísimo tiempo sin ver animes, y menos los nuevos de 2024. Creo que descubrí este anime —si no recuerdo mal— porque lo vi en un top de los mejores animes de ese año, o quizás porque escuché el opening en algún lado y me llamó tanto la atención que tenía que verlo sí o sí. Me inclino más por la segunda opción, y lo primero ocurrió después de verlo. Pero bueno, basta de divagaciones por hoy.
La premisa es bastante curiosa: al ser la protagonista una boticaria, pensarías que se trataría de un slice of life común y corriente, donde ella pasa sus días encerrada en un palacio y se enamora (aquí hay un poco de romance, pero muy secundario), cosas así, ya saben… lo clásico, algo para pasar el rato. La sorpresa llega cuando todo se llena de misterios por doquier y casos por resolver, hasta el punto de parecer una novela policíaca en la que la protagonista debe resolver diversas situaciones con sus conocimientos en medicina. Así que, sin más dilación, hablemos de The Apothecary Diaries.

Today, I come to you with a fantastic discovery—at least for me—as when I first watched it, I’d gone ages without watching any anime, let alone new 2024 releases. I believe I came across this anime (if I recall correctly) after seeing it in a top list of that year’s best anime, or perhaps because I heard the opening somewhere and it caught my attention so sharply that I simply had to watch it. I’m leaning more towards the latter, with the former happening after I’d already seen it. But enough digressions for today.
The premise is rather curious: given that the protagonist is an apothecary, you’d expect it to be your run-of-the-mill slice of life, with her whiling away her days confined to a palace and falling in love (there’s a bit of romance here, but it’s very secondary)—you know, the usual stuff, just something to pass the time. The surprise comes when everything becomes riddled with mysteries and cases to solve, to the point where it feels more like a detective novel, with the protagonist untangling various predicaments using her knowledge of medicine. So without further ado, let’s talk about The Apothecary Diaries.

La historia nos sitúa en la piel de Maomao, una joven boticaria que vive en el distrito rojo de la ciudad y siempre busca aprender más sobre medicinas y venenos. Un día, mientras recolectaba plantas y flores para sus experimentos (que suele probar en sí misma), es secuestrada y vendida al palacio interior. Allí, intentará pasar desapercibida a toda costa, actuando con normalidad y fingiendo, por ejemplo, no saber leer (algo común en esa época). Solo quiere esperar los años necesarios para ser liberada, pero su curiosidad la traiciona cuando escucha rumores sobre la extraña muerte de uno de los hijos de una de las concubinas del emperador. Maomao decide investigar y descubre que la causa del deceso fue un polvo proveniente de una flor cultivada en el palacio. Además, advierte a la madre del bebé, quien también estaba debilitada por la exposición al polvo. Dejar esa nota de advertencia arruinará su tranquilidad, pues el consejero del emperador no tarda en descubrir que ella resolvió el caso. Así, es llevada a una zona de mayor rango y puesta al servicio de una de las concubinas, asumiendo el rol de catadora de alimentos y ayudando al consejero a resolver los misterios del palacio. En resumen, una trama llena de intrigas que nos mantiene enganchados para ver cómo se resuelven los casos.
The story places us in the shoes of Maomao, a young apothecary living in the city’s pleasure district, who is endlessly eager to expand her knowledge of medicines and poisons. One day, while gathering plants and flowers for her experiments (which she often tests on herself), she is kidnapped and sold into the inner palace. There, she strives to remain inconspicuous at all costs—acting ordinarily and even feigning illiteracy (a common trait for the era). Her sole aim is to bide her time until she can earn her freedom, but her curiosity betrays her when she overhears whispers about the mysterious death of one of the emperor’s concubines’ infants.
Maomao takes it upon herself to investigate and uncovers the cause: a poisonous powder derived from a flower cultivated within the palace grounds. She warns the child’s mother, who herself has grown frail from prolonged exposure to the toxin. Yet leaving that warning note shatters her anonymity—the emperor’s advisor swiftly deduces her role in solving the case. Consequently, she is promoted to a higher-ranking quarter, assigned to serve one of the concubines as a food taster, and tasked with aiding the advisor in unraveling the palace’s enigmas. In short, it’s a plot brimming with intrigue that keeps you hooked, eager to see each mystery unfold.

Sin duda, lo más destacable de la primera temporada es que todo es un "las apariencias engañan" de principio a fin. Los casos parecen inconexos al inicio, pero conforme avanzas, descubres que todo está relacionado y hay un artífice detrás. Lo mejor es que el anime te hace pensar: te da pistas para que juzgues por tu cuenta, hasta que al final —como me pasó a mí— te das cuenta de que nada de lo que creías era correcto. Ni los malos son tan malos, ni los buenos son tan buenos (esto aplica para cierto personaje que aparece hacia el final de la temporada). Hacía tiempo que no veía algo tan bueno y de este nivel. Los personajes son excelentes, y los misterios hacen que la trama fluya por sí sola. Incluso hay escenas impactantes por su calidad, como cuando Maomao descubre que a una concubina le están administrando un polvo venenoso —prohibido por ella— y estalla contra las cuidadoras. La animación en ese momento es brutal; en escenas más cotidianas, se mantiene bien. Por cierto, si lo ves y te saltas el primer opening, sinceramente no sabes lo que es música de verdad.
Without a doubt, the most remarkable aspect of the first season is how it embodies 'appearances can be deceptive' from start to finish. The cases initially seem unrelated, but as you progress, you discover everything is connected with a mastermind behind it all. What's brilliant is how the anime makes you think - it gives you clues to form your own judgments, until eventually (just as happened to me) you realise nothing you believed was correct. The villains aren't so villainous, the heroes not so heroic (this particularly applies to a certain character who appears towards the season's end). It had been ages since I'd seen something this good and of such high calibre. The characters are superb, and the mysteries make the plot flow effortlessly. There are even some properly shocking scenes in terms of quality, like when Maomao discovers a concubine is being poisoned with a powder (which she'd previously banned) and confronts the caretakers. The animation in that moment is absolutely savage; in more mundane scenes, it holds up well. Incidentally, if you watch this and skip the first opening, frankly you've no idea what proper music sounds like.

En conclusión, la boticaria ha llegado para quedarse: larga vida a Maomao. Si tuviera que elegir el mejor anime del 2024, sin duda diría que este, incluso con los ojos cerrados. Actualmente, está en emisión una segunda temporada, pero no la he visto porque prefiero esperar a que termine para seguir mejor el hilo de los misterios. Advertencia: debes estar muy atento, pues a veces las cosas no se explican directamente; el anime confía en que, como espectador, irás comprendiendo los eventos por tu cuenta. Esto es interesante, porque te trata como a un ser pensante y no como a alguien que necesita que todo le sea masticado. Al final, te enamorarás de Maomao y del resto del elenco, todos entrañables y misteriosos, cada uno con su propio arco. Demasiados giros inesperados por todos lados. Es un irrevocable 10/10 en mis libros, y eso que no suelo dar notas tan altas.
In conclusion, the apothecary is here to stay - long live Maomao. If I had to pick 2024's best anime, I'd unquestionably choose this one with my eyes closed. Currently, a second season is airing, but I'm holding off until it concludes to properly follow the thread of mysteries. Word of warning: you'll need to pay proper attention, as things aren't always spelled out; the anime trusts you'll piece things together yourself as a viewer. This makes for refreshing viewing, treating its audience as thinking beings rather than spoon-feeding every detail. By the end, you'll be utterly charmed by Maomao and the entire cast - each wonderfully peculiar with their own compelling arcs. The plot twists come thick and fast. An undeniable 10/10 in my book, and I'm hardly one to hand out top marks lightly.
