I've seen a lot of anime in my time and one thing about the characters is that there are Always interesting characters in every anime. Usually over the top, sometimes relatable, sometimes just plain silly.
Having to pick a single favorite character is pretty much impossible for any true anime fan. So, rather than pick a character that you might or might not agree upon how about a character you likely have never heard of?
My nomination for favorite anime character would be "Fam" from Ruin Explorers.

Why Fam?

But a little bit about the story. Now the anime is almost 30 years old now and I saw it when it was a new release. My memory of the story is a little "foggy". However I do remember there are two adventurers Ihrie and Fam. Ihrie is a powerful mage and swordswoman with a little problem. If she uses magic she turns into a mouse...and she's running out of the few magic tablets that turn her back to human. Fam gets magic by speaking to the spirits for help. She is childlike and doesn't want to offend them or they may stop speaking to her. Unfortunately due to her childlike nature she often gets Ihrie in trouble ending in a very unhappy mouse...and of course the term "Fam no baka!"
With only 4 episodes its regrettable that I don't get to see either character more. However if you had a bit of time to kill and want an anime that's a funny romp. Enjoy the childlike Fam and the grumpy Ihrie as they strive to break the curse and rule the world...before getting stuck as a mouse forever.
I'm sure there are many better favorite characters from anime. Even as I'm writing this I'm thinking of changing my favorite to Ura: The armour cat! (Makoto, bones OK?)...But nah...I'll stick with Fam.
