Hello anime passionate community!
A few months ago I decided to give a chance to this wonderful anime (the apothecary diaries) that honestly at first glance despite having a very attractive cover for some reason I always left it for later. I just had the impression that it would be some intense love story and in times where anime like Shingeki no Kiojin reign evidently sometimes we are in search of other things.
However, if you are reading this and you find yourself in a similar situation of not knowing whether to watch it or not, I tell you that it is really worth every minute of your time. Mainly because of our protagonist: Maomao, who breaks with all the typical patterns of any ordinary shojo protagonist and I love stories where the female character is empowered without being seen as something forced.
the apothecary diaries is a story set in ancient China. It is not based on real events, but takes socio-cultural and aesthetic elements inspired mainly by the Tang and Ming dynasties. For example the silk road, imperial harem system, the eunuchs in the court and their importance in the inner palace, traditional medicine and its social structure where class differences were very marked and social freedom for women was extremely limited. Despite being Japanese, the aesthetics of the animation evokes an atmosphere very faithful to the imperial palaces of East Asia that allows us to play with the imagination of what life would be like in the imperial court.
And then we meet Maomao again, without fully knowing what her story is, she catches you by being sarcastic, willing to help but very little interested in pleasing others. Someone who shines by the simple fact of showing herself as she is. She might seem introverted, but she is more someone who is aware of her social position and just tells it like it is when asked. This arouses curiosity in Jinshi, who very slowly, shows herself to be Maomao's romantic interest. However, in the anime there is a long way to go for this to happen since it is the adaptation of a light novel by Natsu Hyūga that currently has 16 volumes and the anime has only 2 seasons.
The relationship between Jinshi and Maomao develops with a silent subtlety, from their first meeting Jinshi is intrigued because Maomao does not give in to his charms, on the contrary he always treats him with a certain contempt and annoyance even though he does not dislike him. Maomao tries not to get emotionally involved, especially when he learns Jinshi's true identity because of the social status that separates them both.
And this position will be the one he will maintain for at least 10 volumes. What motivated me a bit to analyze Maomao's personality and write about this, an incredibly complex character with many difficulties to open up emotionally.
Maomao grew up in a hostile environment, where survival depended on reason and emotional restraint. Being rejected by her mother, from birth. One of the ladies of the house of pleasure and then inherit all that contempt and resentment towards his father. This could have generated an avoidant attachment, since she got used to rely only on herself and to repress any emotion that could make her vulnerable to adversities. Later on, the dynamics of power and relationships forced by social pressure or convenience would strengthen this emotional defense mechanism, mainly with Jinshi, the emperor's younger brother.
His analytical attitude is also a way of protecting himself from emotional pain. Camouflaging any affection he may feel with indifference. Also his low self-esteem, that despite being someone who from the beginning shines for his intellect does not consider himself as someone worthy of aspiring to a relationship and much less with someone of Jinshi's status, so he prefers to take refuge in his great love for medicine.
On the other hand, there is also his relationship with his real father Lakan, whom he does not exactly hate, but there is a great barrier of resentment and discomfort built up over the years. What marks the great importance of the father's presence in the first years of life. That sense of abandonment and whose existence was hidden for convenience, then upon learning of his existence his lack of emotional responsibility as he pretends to appear out of nowhere and form bonds after having been absent when she needed him most are the main reasons why maomao cannot forgive and trust him.
Maomao developed an inability to recognize herself as someone worthy of loving and being loved, denying her feelings by defining herself as rational, logical and impartial, admitting that she likes someone like Jinshi is to contradict that self-image.
But not everything was so bad in Maomao's childhood, as she showed that she could adapt to the conditions in which she was born and grew up, she received a lot of love from the ladies of the company, who would see her as a younger sister, and even from the owner of the brothel. Finally, an important figure in Maomao's life, who would adopt her and teach her everything he knows about medicine: Loumen, her great-uncle. The most important person for her and also, in her words, the kindest person she knows.
He not only taught her about medicine, but also her vision of the world and how to face pain. He gave her clinical and deductive intellect, taught her to observe without judging and also distanced her from sentimentality. Although Loumen does not appear to be the most loving father, the love he offered her is based on full confidence in her intellectual capacities, which helped her to defend herself from the beginning.
Luomen's image is so important and crucial in maomao's life even to realize what his real feelings are towards Jinshi. But I don't want to focus on spoilers.
Sometimes we fall in love with series or certain characters and have so many things to say, but no one to talk to. I'm currently reading the light novels and I'm fascinated with the development this story has taken. I could go on and on analyzing things, but for now I'll leave it at this point. Hace unos meses decidí darle una oportunidad a este maravilloso anime (the apothecary diaries) que sinceramente a primera vista a pesar de tener una portada muy atractiva por alguna razón siempre lo dejaba para más adelante. Simplemente tenía la impresión de que sería alguna historia de amor intensa y en tiempos donde reinan animes como Shingeki no Kiojin evidentemente a veces estamos en busca de otras cosas.
Sin embargo, si estás leyendo esto y te encuentras en una situación similar de no saber si verla o no, te digo que realmente vale cada minuto de tu tiempo. Principalmente por nuestro protagonista: Maomao, que rompe con todos los esquemas típicos de cualquier protagonista de shojo común y corriente y me encantan las historias en las que el personaje femenino se empodera sin ser visto como algo forzado.
Los diarios de la boticaria es una historia ambientada en la antigua China. No se basa en hechos reales, sino que toma elementos socioculturales y estéticos inspirados principalmente en las dinastías Tang y Ming. Por ejemplo, la ruta de la seda, el sistema imperial de harenes, los eunucos en la corte y su importancia en el palacio interior, la medicina tradicional y su estructura social, donde las diferencias de clase eran muy marcadas y la libertad social de las mujeres estaba extremadamente limitada. A pesar de ser japonesa, la estética de la animación evoca una atmósfera muy fiel a los palacios imperiales del este asiático que nos permite jugar con la imaginación de cómo sería la vida en la corte imperial.
Y entonces volvemos a encontrarnos con Maomao, que sin saber muy bien cuál es su historia, te atrapa por ser sarcástica, dispuesta a ayudar pero muy poco interesada en agradar a los demás. Alguien que brilla por el simple hecho de mostrarse tal y como es. Puede parecer introvertida, pero es más bien alguien consciente de su posición social y que se limita a decir las cosas como son cuando le preguntan. Esto despierta la curiosidad de Jinshi, que muy lentamente, se muestra como el interés romántico de Maomao. Sin embargo, en el anime hay un largo camino por recorrer para que esto ocurra ya que es la adaptación de una novela ligera de Natsu Hyūga que actualmente cuenta con 16 volúmenes y el anime solo tiene 2 temporadas.
La relación entre Jinshi y Maomao se desarrolla con una sutileza silenciosa, desde su primer encuentro Jinshi se siente intrigado porque Maomao no cede a sus encantos, al contrario, siempre le trata con cierto desprecio y fastidio aunque no le desagrada. Maomao intenta no implicarse emocionalmente, sobre todo cuando conoce la verdadera identidad de Jinshi debido al estatus social que separa a ambos.
Y esta posición será la que mantenga durante al menos 10 volúmenes. Lo que me motivó un poco a analizar la personalidad de Maomao y escribir sobre esto, un personaje increíblemente complejo y con muchas dificultades para abrirse emocionalmente.
Maomao creció en un entorno hostil, donde la supervivencia dependía de la razón y la contención emocional. Siendo rechazada por su madre, desde su nacimiento. Heredó todo ese desprecio y resentimiento hacia su padre. Esto podría haber generado un apego evitativo, ya que se acostumbró a confiar sólo en sí misma y a reprimir cualquier emoción que pudiera hacerla vulnerable a las adversidades. Más tarde, la dinámica del poder y las relaciones forzadas por la presión social o la conveniencia, reforzarían este mecanismo de defensa emocional, principalmente con Jinshi, el hermano menor del emperador.
Su actitud analítica es también una forma de protegerse del dolor emocional. Camufla cualquier afecto que pueda sentir con indiferencia. También su baja autoestima, que a pesar de ser alguien que desde el principio brilla por su intelecto no se considera a sí misma como alguien digno de aspirar a una relación y mucho menos con alguien del estatus de Jinshi, por lo que prefiere refugiarse en su gran amor por la medicina.
Por otro lado, también está su relación con su verdadero padre, Lakan, al que no odia exactamente, pero existe una gran barrera de resentimiento y malestar acumulada a lo largo de los años. Lo que marca la gran importancia de la presencia del padre en los primeros años de vida. Esa sensación de abandono y cuya existencia fue ocultada por conveniencia, luego al enterarse de su existencia su falta de responsabilidad emocional al pretender aparecer de la nada y formar vínculos después de haber estado ausente cuando ella más lo necesitaba son las principales razones por las que maomao no puede perdonarlo y confiar en él.
Maomao desarrolló una incapacidad para reconocerse a sí misma como alguien digno de amar y ser amada, negando sus sentimientos al definirse como racional, lógica e imparcial. Admitir que le gusta alguien como Jinshi es contradecir esa autoimagen.
Pero no todo fue tan malo en la infancia de Maomao, ya que demostró que podía adaptarse a las condiciones en las que nació y creció, recibió mucho cariño de las damas de compañía, que la verían como una hermana menor, e incluso de la dueña del burdel. Por último, una figura importante en la vida de Maomao, que la adoptaría y le enseñaría todo lo que sabe sobre medicina: Loumen, su tío abuelo. La persona más importante para ella y también, según sus palabras, la más amable que conoce.
No sólo le enseñó medicina, sino también su visión del mundo y cómo afrontar el dolor. Le dio intelecto clínico y deductivo, le enseñó a observar sin juzgar y también la alejó del sentimentalismo. Aunque Loumen no parece el padre más cariñoso, el amor que le ofreció se basa en la plena confianza en sus capacidades intelectuales, lo que la ayudó a defenderse desde el principio.
La imagen de Luomen es tan importante y crucial en la vida de maomao incluso para darse cuenta de cuáles son sus verdaderos sentimientos hacia Jinshi. Pero no quiero centrarme en spoilers.
A veces nos enamoramos de series o de ciertos personajes y tenemos tantas cosas que decir, pero nadie con quien hablar. Actualmente estoy leyendo las novelas ligeras y estoy fascinada con el desarrollo que ha tomado esta historia. Podría seguir y seguir analizando cosas, pero por ahora lo dejaré en este punto.
