I haven't seen many donghuas, only those where the animation, besides being beautiful, felt fluid and had interesting stories. However, I must admit they're a bit difficult to understand, firstly because of the almost 15-minute format—that is, short episodes—and because they cram a lot of elements, characters, and plot into a single episode, making it hard to follow. Even so, there are stories that, with a bit more depth and development, would have stood out more, like the ones I'm going to talk about today, which, depending on your taste, might pique your interest.

It premiered in 2019, produced by Taikong Works (Space Works); it has two seasons, the first with 12 episodes and the second (2021) with 16 episodes, each approximately 15 minutes long. It falls into the romance, science fiction, drama, and fantasy genres, and I understand the story is inspired by the very famous song "Love Before BC" by Taiwanese singer Jay Chou, which makes it unusual to see a donghua directly based on the narrative of a pop song.

Regarding the plot…

Well, the story involves a little bit of everything and the plot is quite complicated to follow, but strangely enough, you manage to understand it; well, it all begins when some aliens, yes, aliens, arrive on planet Earth, somewhere in Mesopotamia, where they build the famous Tower of Babel as a launching station to return to their home. However, a tragic technological accident during construction claims the life of Li Muzi, a human who deeply loved the leader of these visitors, an immortal being named Jay.

Since then, these aliens have remained trapped on the planet, living among humans and trying to find a way back home. However, Jay, besides watching the centuries pass, desperately searched for Muzi through his constant reincarnations. The problem is that, in each new life, she is born as a different person with no memory of her past, which places us, or rather, jumps us to the present, where Jay has become a cold and powerful entertainment industry mogul and finds the current Muzi, a rather enthusiastic, aspiring young woman who dreams of becoming a music star, and who obviously doesn't remember her past.

The problem lies not only in the memories, but also in the fact that fate seems to repeat the same tragic pattern. While Jay tries to protect her from the shadows and help her fulfill her dream, he must contend with the intrigues of his own kind and the mystery of why their love seems cursed, ending in disaster every time they meet. Will they be able to make their love work? Will they manage to be together?

Personal opinion

Mmm, as I've been saying, the problem with this donghua, and many others, is that they suddenly jump around in time or have abrupt scenes. First, it starts with aliens, ancient Babylon, then we jump to the present, the protagonist as a child, then as an adult, and all in 7 minutes, leaving you confused. Even though it's explained later, you're still confused. Strange, isn't it? Anyway, let's start with what I liked. First, I found the character designs nice and decent, although the animation lacks the fluidity of Japanese anime. It's salvageable in certain parts, especially because they don't use 3D animation, but rather refined 2D. The story is beautiful, and I'm impressed that it's inspired by a song, which is also a strong point of the donghua itself, since it's part of the ending theme, and it's beautiful to listen to and see the lyrics.

I also like how they play with the color palettes, using very saturated and contrasting tones. We go from the golds and ochres of ancient Babylon to the neons and cold blues of the modern metropolis. The landscapes are also well done; for example, the Tower of Babel has architecture that achieves a cosmopolitan atmosphere, but with a historical weight behind it. Now, even though they introduced the aliens, it worked in a way. It adds an interesting layer of technical complexity; it's not just magic, it's technology misunderstood by ancient humans. But I think the pacing and the script didn't help it much. There are too many patches trying to cover the gaps left by the rushed plot. They don't take the time to let us get to know the characters, why they are the way they are, what their importance is in the story, what they want to convey, and that's the series' biggest flaw.

In addition to falling into generic clichés, the series also relies on several tropes of Chinese romantic dramas (the cold and rich CEO, the optimistic but unlucky girl, the constant misunderstandings). If you're not a fan of melodramatic romance, you might find it a bit tedious, even though it has a fairly interesting premise that could be better developed. Furthermore, the second season left us wanting more, and so much time has passed that I don't think they'll continue it. It's just as much of a Fox Spirit Matchmaker; I mean, I know this Tower of Babel and alien storyline was confusing, but don't leave us with that ending.

Positive points…

- A very nice visual aesthetic and quite acceptable animation.

- Quite attractive character designs.

- Original Premise: Mixing the Tower of Babel and aliens with the modern world of idols is a risky but fascinating combination that manages to maintain interest in the mystery of "what really happened in the past."

- The music is the soul of the story itself.

Negative points…

-The length of the episodes and the sheer number of elements they cram in makes the whole story confusing.

-Poor pacing and a poorly structured script.

-Genre clichés.

-Lack of character development, especially for the secondary characters.

If you appreciate visual art and music, you'll love it. If you're looking for a dense and complex science fiction plot, you might feel that the romance takes up too much space from the technical aspects of the aliens, and you might lose interest. As I said at the beginning, it all depends on your tastes. Personally, I can't say I loved it. I found it entertaining, and I do want to know what happens next, but it was lacking in many ways, and those details make me less inclined to watch it again.

No he visto muchos donghuas, solo aquellos donde la animación además de parecerme bonita, se sentía como más fluidas y con historias interesantes, sin embargo, debo admitir que resulta un poco entenderlos, primero por el formato de casi 15 minutos, es decir, de corta duración y donde meten muchos elementos, personajes y trama en un capítulo y cuesta como seguirle el hilo al asunto. Aun así, hay historias que, con un poco más de profundidad y desarrollo en sí, se hubiesen destacado más, como las que les voy hablar del día de hoy, que, dependiendo del gusto de cada uno, puede que les llame la atención para verla.

Fue estrenado para el año 2019, bajo el estudio de animación Taikong Works (Space Works); tiene dos temporadas, la primera con 12 episodios y la segunda (2021) con 16 episodios, aproximadamente de 15 minutos cada uno. Es de genero romance, ciencia ficción, drama y fantasía y, tengo entendido que la historia está inspirada en la famosísima canción "Love Before BC" del cantante taiwanés Jay Chou, lo cual hace poco común ver un donghua nacido directamente de la narrativa de una canción pop.

En cuanto a la trama…

Bueno, la historia involucra de todo un poco y es bastante complicado seguir la trama, pero extrañamente, logras comprenderla; bien, todo comienza cuando, unos alienígenas, si, alienígenas llegan al planeta tierra, por ahí en tierras mesopotámicas, donde construyen la famosa torre de Babel, como una estación de lanzamiento para volver a su hogar. Sin embargo, un trágico accidente tecnológico durante la construcción cobra la vida de Li Muzi, una humana que amaba profundamente al líder de estos visitantes, un ser inmortal llamado Jay.

Desde ese entonces, dichos alienígenas se quedan atrapados en el planeta, conviviendo entre los humanos e intentando un modo de volver a su caso, no obstante, Jay, además de ver como pasaban los siglos, buscaba desesperadamente a Muzi a través de sus constantes reencarnaciones. El problema es que, en cada nueva vida, ella nace como una persona distinta y sin un solo recuerdo de su pasado, lo que nos ubica, o mejor, nos saltan al presente, donde Jay se ha convertido en un frío y poderoso magnate de la industria del entretenimiento y encuentra a la Muzi actual, una chica bastante entusiasta, aprendiz que sueña con ser una estrella de la música, quien obviamente no recuerda su pasado.

El problema no solo radica en los recuerdos, sino que el destino parece repetir siempre el mismo patrón trágico. Mientras Jay intenta protegerla desde las sombras y ayudarla a cumplir su sueño, debe lidiar con las intrigas de su propia especie y con el misterio de por qué su amor parece estar maldito para terminar en desastre cada vez que se encuentran ¿serán capaces de que su amor sea posible? ¿lograrán estar juntos?

Opinión personal

Mmm, como he venido diciendo, el problema de este donghua y de muchos, es que de repente dan saltos de tiempos o escenas bruscas, primero comienza con alienígenas, la antigua babilonia, después vamos al presente, la protagonista de niña, luego adulta y todo e 7 minutos y quedas como confusa, aunque se explica más adelante, aun sigues en estado de confusión, ¿extraño no? En fin, vamos primero lo que me gustó, primero el diseño de los personajes se me hizo bonito, decente, aunque la animación le falta como esa fluidez de los animes japoneses, esta rescatable en ciertos puntos, sobre todo porque no recurren a la animación 3D, sino a la 2D refinada; la historia es bonita y me impresiona que está inspirada en una canción, la cual es también el punto fuerte del mismo donghua, ya que es parte del ending y es hermoso de escuchar y ver la letra del mismo.

Me gusta también como juegan con las paletas de colores, utiliza tonos muy saturados y contrastados, pasamos de los dorados y ocres de la antigua Babilonia a los neones y azules fríos de la metrópolis moderna, aunado que los paisajes están bien jugados, por ejemplo, a Torre de Babel, es una arquitectura que logra una atmósfera que se siente cosmopolita, pero con un peso histórico detrás. Ahora bien, aunque hayan metido esto de los alienígenas, funcionaba de algún modo, le da una capa de complejidad técnica interesante, no es solo magia, es tecnología incomprendida por los antiguos humanos, pero creo que el ritmo y el guion, no lo ayudaron mucho, hay como muchos parches que intentan cubrir los huecos que nos está dejando la trama tan apresurada, no se toman el tiempo de que conozcamos a los personajes, del porque son así, cuál es su peso en la historia, el que nos quieren transmitir y ahí es el mayor fallo de la serie.

Aunado que la serie también recae en los clichés genéricos, cae en varios tropos del drama romántico chino (el CEO frío y rico, la chica optimista, pero con mala suerte, los malentendidos constantes). Si no eres fan del romance melodramático, te puede resultar algo pesado y eso que tiene una premisa bastante interesante, que puedo ser mejor explotada, agregando que, la segunda temporada nos dejó con ganas de más y ya ha pasado tanto tiempo que no creo que la continúen, esta igual de fox spirit matchmaker, ósea, yo sé que esta historia de la torre de babel y alienígenas estaba confusa, pero no nos deje con ese final.

Puntos positivos…

-Una estética visual bien bonita y animación bastante aceptable.

-Diseño de personajes bastantes atractivos.

-Premisa Original: Mezclar la Torre de Babel y alienígenas con el mundo moderno de los idols es una combinación arriesgada pero fascinante que logra mantener el interés por el misterio de "qué pasó realmente en el pasado".

-La música es el alma de la historia en sí.

Puntos negativos…

-La duración de los episodios y que nos meten tantos elementos, que se termina confundiendo toda la historia.

-Ritmo Narrativo y un guion mal estructurado.

-Clichés de Género.

-Falta de desarrollo de los personajes, más aún de los secundarios.

Puntaje que le doy…

Si valoras el arte visual y la música, te va a encantar. Si buscas una trama de ciencia ficción densa y compleja, quizás sientas que el romance le quita demasiado espacio a la parte técnica de los alienígenas y puede que ya no le encuentres atractivo, como dije al principio, todo depende de los gustos, por mi parte, no puedo decir que me encanto, me resulto entretenida y si quiero saber en qué más continua, pero, le falto mucho y esos detalles hacen que decaigan en querer volverla a ver.
