Athena
Hey ho guys, today I present you my drawing of the Goddess of wisdom, handicraft, heroism, courage, war, strategy, industry, and cities - Athena (or Athene, there are two ways of writing it, if I am right?).
I felt like drawing something with more knowledge behind. Get me right, I love to draw fantasy stuff or just stuff what comes in my mind randomly neither but this time I wanted to dive a bit deeper in the Greek history. Every culture has a lot of great art and Mythology and so I wanted to try to draw Athena on my style.
But first, who exactly is she by the way...
About Athena
Athena or Athene is an ancient Greek goddess which is mostly associated with wisdom, handicraft, and warfare. She was later syncretized with the Roman goddess Minerva,if I understood right.
Athena was regarded as the patron and protectress of different cities across Greece, also the city of Athens, from which she got her name. Her major symbols are owls, snakes, spiders, horses, and serpents, as plant her symbol is the olive tree. Her weapons are mostly helmet, spear, armor, chariot, and distaff.
In art, she is generally depicted wearing a helmet and holding a spear.
Her parents are Zeus and maybe Metis, and she has a looooooot of siblings... Aaaawwwww, I counted 24 or 25....so please forgive me if I don't write down all the names now. But if you research in the internet you will find them all.
Some say, in Hindu culture she is equivalent to Sarasvati, interesting isn't it?
I wrote before maybe Metis right? I wrote this cause I found different sources, mostly is said Athena has no mother and has been born from the forehead of her father Zeus. Can you imagine? Sounds like surrealism, hahaha. Maybe this should represent the mind (forehead) cause she seems to have an analytical personality.
What you think?
I never dived sooo deep in the meaning of this Greek legends, I just like the art. So it's always refreshing to read about it. But this Greek legends are total complex and complicated neither, so I would advise, if you like to know more about all that, just make your own research.
She was mostly dressed like a male soldier, not soooo feminine like other goddess.
where my inspiration come from
Yeah, maybe you guys recognized... I love comics? So I saw "the eternals" (Marvel comics) and in this movie Angelina Jolie is playing this goddess. I won't spoil it, no worries, watch the movie by yourself. But I was like "cool, I have to draw some Greece gods". That's it, simple and easy motivation and inspiration kick. Maybe not so philosophical like you thought... 🤣😅
But sure I like drawing pictures with more meaningful symbolic. I think in ancient art and culture we find a lot.
But now enough of all this words, before you get bored, let's watch step by step of my drawing.... Here we goooooooooo....
