Even in the near-Earth regions of the galaxy, there are some things that will never be terraformed. The migration of the Running Firewheels is among those things.
Now, of course, in all honesty, any creature of the size and strength and energy level to live in the heliopause of any Sun-sized star or greater star ought not to be compared with anything but fire in that conflation of wheels and running that the name suggests … but as ever, humans will be humans, and I'm one of them, so we're just going to go with it.
These are vast creatures, largely rolling rings of intense energy with large, complex jets trailing out at different times in their travel to adjust their course in the turbulent regions between their resident heliopauses and the interstellar space beyond them. They adjust to very fine divisions of degrees, necessary for comparably sized starships as well, before exiting into interstellar space at some of the highest sublight speeds ever recorded in living beings.
About their steering: as those that have guided a vessel on the sea, in the air, or among the stars already knows, the farther you need to go, the more accurate your initial steering needs to be. One-thousandth of a degree off translates to hundreds and thousands of miles off course on a planet – one-millionth or even one-trillionth of a degree off in space is the difference of light-years off if that kind of distance is what you are traveling.
No migration of Running Firewheels has ever been known to miss the heliopauses they are heading for, and warp speed travel is not permitted in their region of migration so as not to disturb them. When I was a young commercial shipper, this annoyed me, but as a mature man and businessman, one just accounts for such things as regular business.
Khadijah and I headed out to get into viewing location for the migration, and laughed hard … it takes a special moment of photographing to catch these creatures actually "running," but between us, we got the photograph above –.
“And there are our counterparts, running among the stars to find their honeymoon spot!” she said.
It is as good a story for catching a pair of Running Firewheels actually “running” as any!
