I’m not throwing out the gel pens yet, they get one last chance. Maybe the fault is not in them but in me. More precisely in the choice of paper. I already know that watercolor paper and other, rough papers are not good. And not good to combine with other techniques, e.g. watercolors. And with the colored pencil (or watercolor pencil as well), the gel pen fails because they repel each other.
Maybe the fountain pen ink is compatible with it, but only if you use it first, then the gel pen. If you apply it after the gel pen, the ink will run off. You can see it in my drawing bellow as thick black lines with lacy edges.

Fountain pen ink is water soluble, so it should be handled with care! However, very nice effects can be created with a water brush.
Working with the gel pen was lengthy. I have tried to create gradients with more or less success. Silver gray complements and frames the colors, softening the hardness of black.
In the end, I tried DeepDream and then modified it in GIMP, but I wasn’t happy with it. That ugly purple-gray background ruined the overall effect.
PhotoMosh, on the other hand, worked pretty well. Coming to life they are just like amoebas.
