Yesterday, I wanted to do a graphite pencil portrait, just like I used to, to see if I still remember how and if I still have the techniques mastered to the same level. And I can say yes, I still maintain an acceptable level of graphite technique. First, I did a sketch off-camera because this is the process that takes me the most time, and I prefer to do it outside of the recording so the video doesn't get too long. This process ranges from deciding whether it will be a man or a woman, to the position of the face, perspective, angle, and the expressions the character will have. Once I have that on the sheet, I erase it, leaving a very light trace to start drawing over.
Once I start the actual drawing, my focus is 100% on the paper because the margin of error is greater than drawing with pens, even if that seems contradictory, since pencil can be erased. But drawing with pens allows for a bit more creative freedom, at least in my style of pen drawings, which aren't portraits or real people, but fictional characters. With pencils, the goal is always to make a portrait resemble the subject as closely as possible, and although this drawing is not of anyone in particular, the features have to be natural, not exaggerated or minimized, respecting the natural proportions of a face. At first, her lips were too small compared to her nose, and I felt it didn't look right, so I had to lengthen her lips a bit more to match the width of her nose. El día de ayer quise hacer un retrato con lápiz de grafito, como solía hacer antes, para ver si aún recuerdo cómo hacerlo y si todavía tengo las técnicas dominadas al nivel que tenía. Y puedo decir que sí, aún mantengo un nivel aceptable de técnica con grafito. Primero hice un boceto fuera de cámara, porque este es el proceso que más tiempo me toma y prefiero hacerlo fuera de la grabación para que el video no se haga tan largo. Este proceso va desde la elección de si será hombre o mujer, y luego la posición de la cara, la perspectiva, el ángulo y las expresiones que tendrá el personaje. Luego de tener eso ya en la hoja, lo borro y dejo un trazo bastante claro para empezar a dibujar sobre él.
Una vez que empiezo con el dibujo, mi concentración está al 100% en el papel, ya que el margen de error es mayor que dibujar con bolígrafos, aunque parezca contradictorio porque el lápiz se puede borrar. Pero dibujar con bolígrafos permite tener un poco más de libertad creativa, al menos en mi estilo de dibujos con bolígrafos, que no son retratos ni personas reales, sino personajes ficticios. Con los lápices siempre se busca que un retrato se parezca lo más posible a la persona retratada y, aunque este dibujo no es de nadie en específico, las facciones tienen que ser naturales y no exageradas o minimizadas, respetando las proporciones naturales de un rostro. Al principio, sus labios habían quedado muy pequeños en comparación con su nariz y sentí que no se veía bien, así que tuve que alargar un poco más sus labios para que estuvieran a la par con el ancho de su nariz.
