I donโt know exactly how long my father worked on this drawing, but I believe he must have started it before 2010. He had this ambitious idea to create one large-format ink drawing of the Crucifixion. As he grew older, however, he became slower and slower, and he was never able to finish this quite complex piece.
He used the largest Arches Aquarelle sheet he could get hold of, and it was honestly too big to handle easily in his tiny studio. So sometimes he came over to my house to work on it, or on sunny summer days heโd take it into my backyard and draw under the trees.
He also made significant changes along the way: he would scratch out whole sections with a razor blade, only to redraw them again. Then two years before he passed, I began to realize he would probably not live long enough to complete it.
Now I have it in my own studio, and whenever I look at it, I feel this strong urge to finish it myself. Iโm certain he would have loved the idea of me completing it, and that he would have trusted me to do it in a way that would have satisfied him.
