El fuego es algo muy poderoso y soñar con ello puede tener distintas connotaciones. Tras su descubrimiento, ha tenido un papel fundamental en la evolución del ser humano, desde proporcionarnos alimentos cocidos, calor, luz, energía, hasta ser utilizado como método de ejecución en la antigüedad para delitos religiosos…. En la hoguera. Más allá de los significados esotéricos, o proyecciones del subconsciente en el mundo onírico, soñar que te quemas es sin duda una horrible pesadilla.
No he soñado que me estoy quemando, pero una vez soñé que alguien (o algo) ardía ante mí en una hoguera. Fue muy escalofriante y me motivó a dibujar la cuarta ilustración de la Serie Pesadillas que les estoy compartiendo hoy, que llamé “En Flamas”.

Fire is something very powerful and dreaming about it can have different connotations. After its discovery, it has had a fundamental role in the evolution of the human being, from providing us with cooked food, heat, light, energy, to being used as methods of execution in ancient times for religious crimes…. At the stake. Beyond the esoteric meanings, or projections of the subconscious in the dream world, dreaming that you burn is undoubtedly a horrible nightmare.
I have not dreamed that I am burning, but once I dreamed that someone (or something) was burning before me at a stake. It was very chilling and motivated me to draw the fourth illustration in the Nightmares Series that I am sharing with you today, which I called "En Flamas" (In Flames in english).
Quien sea que estaba ardiendo ante mí, ardía en un fuego voraz que lo consumía por completo. Pude ver cómo las llamas y el humo danzaban alrededor de lo que yacía petrificado en combustión, con una mueca de dolor. En la pesadilla estaba inmóvil (como era muy recurrente en mis sueños) y no pude hacer nada. Fue muy angustiante estar ahí solo mirando sin poder ayudar; era un simple espectador del horror en esa escena atroz.
Debo confesar que no tengo mucha experiencia dibujando fuego, pero me concentré en hacerlo en esta ilustración digital mediante ensayo y error. Estoy feliz de poder finalmente ilustrar la imagen que tenía en mente, producto de la pesadilla que describí anteriormente. A continuación dedico unas breves líneas para comentarles sobre esta experiencia.
Lo primero que hice fue el dibujo del personaje, agregando su respectivo sombreado y un difuminado de luminiscencia roja en su silueta. También agregué una capa roja debajo de la cara para darle este fondo a los ojos, las fosas nasales y la boca. Todo esto para potenciar el efecto de combustión en el cuerpo.
Whoever was burning in front of me, burned in a ravenous fire that consumed him completely. I could see how the flames and smoke danced around what lay petrified in combustion, with a wince of pain. In the nightmare I was immobile (as was very recurrent in my dreams) and I couldn't do anything. It was very distressing to be there just watching without being able to help; I was a mere spectator of the horror in that atrocious scene.
I must confess that I am not very experienced drawing fire, but I concentrated on doing it in this digital illustration using trial and error. I am happy to finally illustrate the image I had in mind, a product of the nightmare that I described earlier. Below I dedicate a few brief lines to tell you about this experience.
The first thing I did was the drawing of the character, adding its respective shading and a blur of red luminescence in its silhouette. I also added a red layer under the face to give this background to the eyes, nostrils, and mouth. All this to enhance the combustion effect in the body.

Ahora comienza la diversión: dibujar el fuego. Hice varias pruebas con el programa Krita y sus herramientas, donde logré el resultado deseado con los pinceles "blender blur" y "blender knife edge". El procedimiento consistió en añadir trazos de los colores rojo, amarillo y negro e ir difuminando para dar forma de llamas. Esto a su vez hizo posible crear diferentes tonos de colores a partir de la mezcla. Coloqué una capa de flamas debajo del personaje y otra en la parte superior para darle un aspecto envolvente.
Terminé agregando capas de humo con diferentes gradientes de colores grises y negros, ayudándome con los pinceles de agua de Krita. Asimismo, añadí chispas que emanan del fuego. Me entretuve borrando y dibujando nuevamente unas cuantas veces durante el desarrollo del dibujo.
Now the fun begins: drawing the fire. I did several tests with the Krita program and its tools, where I achieved the desired result with the "blender blur" and "blender knife edge" brushes. The procedure was to add strokes of the colors red, yellow and black and to go blurring to give the shape of flames. This in turn made it possible to create different shades of colors from the mix. I placed a layer of flames underneath the character and another on top to give it an enveloping look.
I ended up adding layers of smoke with different gradients of gray and black colors, helping me with Krita's water brushes. Also, I added sparks that emanate from the fire. I amused myself by erasing and drawing again a few times during the development of the drawing.
