Hello! We are halfway through 2023... ππ How did that happen??? Also, I am nearing my 1st year here on Hive! They said that a day is longer than a year, heheh. I just feel like as I age, I feel like the time is super fast. Sometimes, I cannot just process everything because there is no time for that. It is not particularly a nice week for me, but I have to get my sht together...
Anyway-
For this week, I chose Fungus Flinger! π
Check the contest here! I was on the list! Yipee π₯³
Art Process
Instead of making art similar to the card, I think of the mushroom in human form. I am thinking of a girl with a mushroom hat. The covered eye makes the character a bit shy-type, just like some mushrooms that are hard to find. π I put an extra mushroom on the left side. Adding the two smoke bombs on both sides. On the background would be a luminous background. This is what was left on my lineart after erasing some parts.
Setting the base colors. Some are color-picked from the original card. I also set the background color at this stage. I really like how the mushroom hat turned out. The color of the eyes is similar to Fungus Flinger, red to orange hue. The hair color is somewhat terracotta-ish ~ just like the color of clay. Those red circles are the lumps/nodes (???) I just Googled it, haha.
Shading time! I started first with the hair, shading it with a maroon color. Adding shine and extra individual hair strands on the back, the mushroom hat and the little mushroom. I used a flat brush, airbrush, and smudge brush for the shading and highlighting. I put another layer on top for the darker shadow below the mushroom hat.
More highlights on top. I used a g-pen for the smoke and distort them using Liquify. Add another layer on top, clipped, and color them green and yellow. I feel like the yellow did not match the original card so I tweaked the saturation a little bit. Put some glow on the body and dress.
I put some dead trees in the background and blur them out. I then used an airbrush for the moon. I highlighted some edges of the character as the reflection of the moon. More individual blurry hair strands. On top of everything, I added a texture and lower the opacity.
