Donkey Pegasus
I created an artwork titled “Donkey Pegasus” the other day for my previous dog’s birthday. She was a tiny pied French Bulldog and lived a long life until she was 13. She had many nicknames, and one of them was “Donkey Pegasus.”
After she passed away, I gave her wings in her portrait. This image became a symbolic image of her for me. I painted this image before. Actually, her hair was everywhere in my house, so I even added some of her hair when I painted it.
This time, I added a new background that looks a little like a traditional Japanese black-and-white ink painting. I usually create a fantastical background for her image, but this time I wanted it to feel more classical. However, the black-and-white image looked a bit too faded, so I colored the moon blue. The blue moon pops out, making the image feel a little like pop art.
Yes, I miss her almost every day. I miss her sniffing sounds, her snoring, her fluffy but firm hair, her tiny paws, her smushy nose, her bat ears, the black spots on her legs, her pink ears, and so much more.
I’m happy to create a new version of this image every year. In my imagination, she is free and flying with her Pegasus wings.

ドンキーペガサス
先日、昔飼っていた愛犬の誕生日に合わせて、「ドンキー・ペガサス」というタイトルの作品を作りました。彼女は小さなパイドのフレンチブルドッグで、１３歳まで元気に生きてくれました。彼女にはたくさんのニックネームがあり、そのひとつがドンキー・ペガサスでした。
彼女が亡くなったあと、彼女の肖像画を描いて翼をつけてあげました。そして、このイメージが私にとって彼女を象徴するような存在になりました。この絵は以前絵の具で描いたものです。彼女の毛は家のあちこちに残っていたので、絵を描くときには実際に彼女の毛も少し混ぜて描きました。
今回は新しい背景を加えました。少し日本の伝統的な白黒の墨絵のような雰囲気にしてみました。普段はもっとファンタジーな背景を作ることが多いのですが、今回は少しクラシックな感じにしたいと思いました。ただ、白黒だけだと少し淡くなりすぎるので、月を青くしました。青い月が少し浮かび上がるように見えて、全体の雰囲気が少しポップアートのようになりました。
彼女のことは、今でもほとんど毎日のように思い出します。くんくんと匂いをかぐ音、いびきの音、ふわふわだけどしっかりした毛、小さな足、ぺちゃんこの鼻、コウモリのような耳、足にあった黒い斑点、ピンク色の耳…まだまだたくさん思い出します。
このイメージを使って、毎年新しい作品を作るのはとても嬉しいことです。私の想像の中では、彼女はペガサスの翼で自由に空を飛んでいます。
