Hi folks! How are you today?
One of my brand's best-selling t-shirts and eco-bags includes this illustration.
It is signed with my last name Brückner since I did not yet recognize myself as Lilico when I made it during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. As you can see, this drawing is relatively simple compared to the ones I create now. There is no shadowing and there are no complex things I can do nowadays, with observation drawing practices.
There is a lot of my roots as an illustration in this drawing because I was wrought in Japanese mangá and Japanese culture. I was attracted to the world of geishas because they are these mythical defenders of beauty, culture, and the arts. I was also inspired by shunga because they are Japanese erotic illustrations in which the octopus is prominently featured, almost like a fetish. I wanted to use this cultural background to create something delicate yet strange simultaneously.
Times of pandemic lockdown. I started the university of my dreams, but it was abruptly halted by a virus that was swiftly murdering millions of people, and I felt completely adrift. My husband, my friends, my family, or maybe my husband could be the next victim. Everything was in a panic. I also resumed counseling, which forced me to address the highly sensitive heart and mind traumas. I was lost. Although I've been drawing for more than 20 years, there was a significant break.
I reconnected with art because I was struggling with a sense of loss and was frightened of dying or losing the ones I care about the most. My north has always been the arts. Art provided me with a safe haven when I was growing up in a chaotic environment.
Without art, I would not have been able to narrate my narrative, conceive of it, or give birth to Lilico. Chaos shook me after some time away from the papers, pencils, and ink pens, calling me back to the realm of art, which had always been my safe haven.
The most emblematic of my return to illustration is this geisha, one of my first sketches after a long absence. And the erotic art I discovered in myself is the most basic form of creativity. Lilico's initial cell is this illustration.
This drawing is currently displayed among another five drawings that I tenderly and lovingly gave to my ex-husband. He will always have this.
This one and other drawings are available for t-shirts, eco-bags, and art prints. Choose your favorite illustration on my Instagram @ohlilico and order!
