The troublesome times in which we live, dictate that great emphasis be placed on personal safety. In an attempt to address concerns in this regard, we may rigorously analyze our own risk profile. Geographical boundaries by social class, provide us with a unique chance to zoom out and see the broader picture. It is from this vantage point, where a most remarkable opportunity presents itself.. the ability to use data to better understand some part of the criminal element.
It is a well known fact that a thief will be tempted by a compromised target, which in his/her view may be easily overcome. Enhancing ones defensive capabilities to the point where his/her attitude changes in this regard, may therefore be a prudent approach to take. But what if others in our community choose to do the same? Then would the criminal simply move on elsewhere?.. or rather be increasingly eager at the prospect of perceived value behind so much collective security?
Those are not easy questions to answer, with there being so many variables to consider.. poverty, greed, repercussions, corruption etc. Though it is interestingly often the poorest who are affected most negatively. One thing is for certain though.. a picklock is increasingly cunning, and will perform his own counter analysis (risk vs reward). It’s therefore up to each of us, in continually upping our ‘street smarts’, so that we may not be the next victim.
