Aunque he estado desconectada de #Hive por un tiempo admito que extrañaba escribir un blog en este grato ecosistema y no podía empezar sin antes dar un repaso de algunas cosas que pasaron el año pasado. Entre ellas está una pequeña gran oportunidad, les contaré acerca de una experiencia artística que significó mucho para mí a mediados del 2025.
Although I have been disconnected from #Hive for a while, I admit that I missed writing a blog in this pleasant ecosystem, and I couldn't start without first reviewing some things that happened last year. Among them is a small but significant opportunity. I will tell you about an artistic experience that meant a lot to me in mid-2025.
For some time, I had been thinking about creating an illustrated book for children, but I never dared to take that step because I didn't know where to start. So when I received a request to illustrate a children's storybook, I felt it was destiny. As some of you may or may not know, years ago I abruptly dropped out of dental school, against my will. You may wonder why I am mentioning this out of the blue, It's because the opportunity to create illustrations for this book had to do precisely with oral health care. I took it as a "benevolent irony." Perhaps the universe was saying, "You don't have to hold the probe and the drill, but pick up your pencil and draw them".
En mi mente hace un tiempo yacía la idea de hacer un libro ilustrado orientado a niños, sin embargo, nunca me atreví a dar ese paso, no sabía por dónde empezar. Así que cuando llegó a mí una petición para ilustrar un libro de cuentos infantiles sentí que fue el destino. Como algunos saben, o quizá no, hace años dejé de cursar de forma abrupta y sin deseo de hacerlo, mi carrera de odontología, se preguntarán por qué estoy mencionando este dato de la nada, pues se debe a que la oportunidad de crear ilustraciones para este libro tenía que ver precisamente con el cuidado de la salud bucal, me lo tomé como una “ironía benévola”, quizá el universo dijo: “no te toca sostener el explorador y el taladro, pero toma el lápiz y dibújalos”.
I won't exaggerate the events, but I do want to highlight many details. It all started when I received a commission: to illustrate stories for a final university degree project. Diana, the lovely person who contacted me, told me she needed my help with the illustrations that would bring her stories to life. She had written three short stories that I thought were brilliant and ideal for children who need to learn about the importance of oral hygiene.
No magnificaré los eventos, pero sí deseo destacar muchos detalles, todo empezó con la recepción de una comisión: ilustrar cuentos para un proyecto final de grado universitario. Diana, así se llama la linda personita que me contactó, me dijo que requería de mis manos para los dibujos que le darían vida a los cuentos que ella había escrito, tres cuentos cortos que me parecieron geniales e ideales para los niños que necesiten aprender de la importancia de la higiene bucal.
Once I accepted the challenge, it was time to start the fun part:

The beginning
Communication is one of the most important things. Ms Diana had a minimalist vision for the drawings, suggesting they be simple to avoid an enormous amount of work. To broaden our perspective on this, we reviewed some references. I read the stories she sent me, and before presenting my ideas and diving into the creative process, we agreed on some technical details: the deadline, conditions, number of revisions, number of pages, length of the story... You could say it was question time: "Any specific situations that need to be represented?, References?, ¿Preferred colour palettes?, Background?, Number of characters?"
La comunicación es de las cosas más importantes, la Srta. Diana tenía una visión minimalista respecto a los dibujos, los sugirió sencillos para evitar un trabajo enorme, para ampliar la perspectiva de esto revisamos algunas referencias. Hice la lectura de los cuentos que me envió, y antes de plantearle mis ideas y sumergirnos en la parte creativa total, se acordaron algunos detalles técnicos: el plazo, condiciones, cantidad de revisiones, número de páginas, tamaño del cuento… se podría decir que fue el momento de las preguntas; “¿Alguna situación puntual que se requiera representar?, ¿Referencias?, ¿paletas de colores preferibles?, ¿fondo?, ¿cantidad de personajes?”
Miss Diana was clear, direct and gave me complete creative freedom. That, along with the payment agreement and the long-term contract she offered me, made the process the best it could be.
La Srta. Diana fue clara, directa y me dejó la total libertad creativa, eso, el acuerdo del pago y el largo plazo que me brindó hizo que el proceso fuera de lo mejor.
Let's get to work
With the technical details noted down, it was time to make the sketches, but before that, we discussed the style she had in mind, based on the references we had reviewed and taking into account my portfolio. At first, Miss Diana suggested that I make stick figure drawings, and we agreed that after I presented my drafts, we would decide on the structure of these characters.
Con los detalles técnicos anotados era hora de hacer los bocetos, pero antes de, discutimos el estilo que ella tenía pensado, basado en las referencias revisadas y en consideración de mi portafolio. Al principio la Srta. Diana sugirió que hiciera dibujos de muñequito de palitos, quedamos en que después de la presentación de mis borradores decidiríamos como sería la estructura de estos personajes.
Sketches are extremely important for presenting and deciding on the basis of what the final product will be or will resemble. The characters I would draw had to be in situations that would allow children to understand the context of the story; teeth, toothpaste, cavities... all of that came to mind.
Los borradores son de suma importancia para presentar y decidir la base de lo que se aproximará o será al producto final. Los personajes que dibujaría debían estar en situaciones que les permitiera a los niños entender el contexto del cuento; dientes, pasta dental, caries… todo eso se venía a mi mente.
Character design
For the sketches, I took a sheet of paper and a pencil and got to work, because there's nothing better than doing it the traditional way to let inspiration flow. At first, I tried out different character designs and offered three alternatives for the general drawing style. Once I had decided on the structure, I drew the characters with different hairstyles and costumes, and the choice was made.
Para los bocetos tomé una hoja, un lápiz y me puse manos a la obra, porque nada mejor que hacerlo al estilo tradicional para dejarse llevar por la inspiración. Al principio hice prueba de diseños de personaje, ofrecí tres alternativas de estilo de dibujo general, una vez decidido como sería la estructura de estos, dibujé a los personajes con distinto peinado o vestuario y la elección fue tomada.
The following sketches I made were subject to basic situations in each story, suitable for understanding them, taking into account the number of drawings agreed upon previously.
Los siguientes bocetos que hice estuvieron sujetos a situaciones elementales de cada cuento, adecuado para el entendimiento de los mismos, tomando en cuenta el monto de dibujos acordados previamente.
The book is titled: "The Magical World of Smiles." So I made some inanimate figures play a leading role. The first story is about the sugar monster, so I drew a small creature with sharp teeth invading the mouth, in contrast to a toothbrush with a cape, like a magical hero saving the little girl's oral health.
El libro se titula: “El mundo mágico de las sonrisas”. Así que hice que algunas figuras inanimadas tuvieran un papel protagonista, el primer cuento se trata del mounstro del azúcar, entonces dibujé una criatura pequeña y con dientes afilados invadiendo la boca, en contraste un cepillo dental con una capa, como un héroe mágico salvando la salud bucal de la pequeña niña.
For the next story, called "The Guardians of the Toothbrush," I expanded my drafts, creating five characters, three of them tooth fairies. I imagined them in a night-time setting, as described in the story. I was very inspired by this draft, sketching several common elements of a bedroom and making them into my favourite drawings.
Para el siguiente cuento llamado “Los guardianes del cepillo” extendí mis borradores, haciendo cinco personajes, tres de ellos hadas de los dientes, me los imaginé en un ambiente nocturno tal como narra el cuento, en este borrador me inspiré un montón, trazando varios elementos comunes de una habitación, haciéndolos de mis dibujos favoritos.
For the third story, "The Journey of Smiles," I limited myself a bit. I made a general sketch of the scene where Lucas visited the dentist's office, which, as its name suggests, was supposed to represent a kingdom. I wasn't very happy with this sketch, but we discussed that simple elements such as crown figures or sparkles would suffice.
Para el tercer cuento: “El viaje de las sonrisas”, me limité un poco. Realicé un boceto general de la escena donde Lucas visitó la sala del dentista, esta como su nombre sugiere debía representar un reino, no estuve muy feliz con este boceto, pero conversamos que elementos sencillos como figuras de la corona o brillitos bastarían.
(It should be noted that some sketches were discarded; I had to give up on one that I was really excited to draw, hehe T.T.)

From traditional to digital magic
I started by importing the photographs of these sketches into Krita. I needed to save time, and I must admit that I was worried because it was the first time I had used vectors to make a drawing. Before using vectors, I made a rasterized guide line as usual (as you can see in the previous images). This would be the next review of sketches in digital format, and I would decide if I wanted to change anything beforehand, that is, the last review regarding the structure or general concept. Here I also tested color palettes, using references on Pinterest to decide on the colors for some environments.
Empecé importando las fotografías de dichos bocetos a Krita, debía ahorrar tiempo y debo admitir que estaba preocupada pues era la primera vez que usaba vectores para hacer un dibujo. Antes de usar los vectores hice una línea guía rasterizada como de costumbre (como pudieron notar en las anteriores imágenes), esta sería la siguiente revisión de bocetos en formato digital y se decidiría si cambiar algo de antemano, es decir, la última revisión respeto a la estructura o concepto general. Aquí también hice la prueba de paletas de colores, usé referencias en Pinterest para decidir los colores de algunos ambientes.
I made a rough layout, the position of the drawings was something to be discussed during the process, which I would not be 100% responsible for. In any case, I made a preliminary text base to deliver the illustrations with established spaces, and I would also deliver the individual drawings in their respective editing formats so that the author could freely lay them out.
Hice una aproximación de la maquetación, la posición de los dibujos era algo a discutir en el proceso, del cual no me encargaría yo al 100%, de todas maneras, hice una base de texto previa para entregar las ilustraciones con espacios establecidos y también entregaría los dibujos individuales en sus respectivos formatos de edición para que se maquetara a libertad de su autora.
The positive thing about using vectors is that you can change the size of the drawing without losing quality. I love that advantage, but when using them, the ease with which I usually create my illustrations was sacrificed.
Lo positivo de usar vectores es que se puede transformar el tamaño del dibujo sin perder calidad, me encanta esa ventaja, pero al emplearlo la soltura con la que suelo hacer mis ilustraciones fue sacrificada.
I enjoyed shaping and curving the vectors. For the colouring, I made flat bases, with a layer of light and a layer of shadows, with some depth, trying not to overdo the details.
Disfruté dándole forma y curvando los vectores. Para el coloreado hice bases planas, con una capa de luz y una de sombras, con algo de profundidad intentando no exagerar con los detalles.
I drew each scene with love, although I must admit that the story that stole my heart was The Magical Guardians, so I had the most fun colouring, editing, and finishing those illustrations.
Dibujé cada escena con cariño, aunque debo admitir que el cuento que flechó mi corazón fue el de Los guardianes mágicos, así que me divertí más al colorear, editar y terminar estas ilustraciones.
When I finished the work, I felt proud and nervous about the writer's reaction. I fulfilled a wish: to illustrate a little book of stories on the topic of oral health, something I have a connection to. It may not be a big request or an exceptional result, but it was very important to me, as well as to the person who was going to present this book as a project. Fortunately, Miss Diana loved every drawing and was very happy with the result.
Cuando acabé con el trabajo me sentí orgullosa y nerviosa por la reacción de la escritora. Materialicé un deseo, ilustrar un librito de cuentos, justo con el tema de la salud bucal, con lo que tengo algo de conexión, quizá no sea un pedido tan grande o un resultado excepcional, pero fue tan importante para mí, como para la persona que estaba por presentar este libro como proyecto. Afortunadamente, la Srta. Diana amó cada dibujo y se sintió muy feliz con el resultado.
