Hi, everyone! March is almost over, and before it ends, I wanted to show you my entry for the art challenge organized by 
I’d been trying to write this post for a few days, but due to some personal issues, I hadn’t been able to get to it.
But here I am again, this time with a new illustration, where I wanted to capture a little piece of Venezuela through pixel art, blending the traditional, the natural, and a bit of our cuisine.
The illustration I created features a musical instrument at its center, which at first glance looks like a guitar, but it isn’t a guitar. This is a very Venezuelan musical instrument that, unlike the guitar, is smaller and has four strings. Its name is Cuatro, and along with maracas and the harp, it’s part of our traditional music, known as joropo or llanera music.
I decorated this Cuatro with other cultural elements from my country, such as orchids and hibiscus flowers. The orchid is a natural symbol of Venezuela; in fact, it is our national flower. Hibiscus flowers, though not native to Venezuela, are very popular and abundant—so much so that no Venezuelan garden is complete without them. In our country, we commonly call them cayena flowers.
Finally, I included fundamental elements of our cuisine: the arepa, which represents the Venezuelan’s daily bread and is a constant presence on our table; and the hallaca. Although the latter is a treasure reserved for Christmas, it is a vital symbol of our identity. It encapsulates our history of cultural blending, fusing indigenous, African, and European influences into a single flavor that defines our essence.

Llevaba algunos días intentando hacer este post, pero debido a algunos inconvenientes personales no había podido hacerlo.
Pero, aquí estoy nuevamente, esta vez con un nueva ilustración, en donde quise representar a un pedacito de Venezuela a través del Pixel Art, mezclando lo tradicional, lo natural y parte de nuestra gastronomía.
La ilustración que hice tiene como centro un instrumento musical, que a simple vista parece una guitarra, pero no es una guitarra, este es un instrumento musical muy venezolano, que a diferencia de la guitarra es más pequeño y está compuesto principalmente de 4 cuerdas. Su nombre es Cuatro y junto a las maracas y el arpa, forman parte de nuestra música tradicional, llamada joropo o música llanera.
A este Cuatro lo decoré con otros elementos culturales de mi país, como lo son las orquídeas y las flores de hibiscos. La orquídea es un símbolo natural venezolano, de hecho es nuestra flor nacional, mientras que las flores de hibiscos aunque no son originarias de aquí, son muy populares y abundantes, tanto así que en cada jardín venezolano no pueden faltar las flores de hibiscos, comúnmente en nuestro país las llamamos flor de cayena.
Para finalizar, incluí elementos fundamentales de nuestra gastronomía: la arepa, que representa el pan de cada día del venezolano y es una presencia constante en nuestra mesa; y la hallaca. Aunque esta última es un tesoro reservado para la Navidad, es un símbolo vital de nuestra identidad. En ella se condensa nuestra historia de mestizaje, fusionando influencias indígenas, africanas y europeas en un solo sabor que define nuestra esencia.
Creative Process 🎨 Proceso Creativo
At first, I didn’t know what to do; folklore encompasses so much that it’s hard to focus on just one thing, so that’s why I decided to combine these three elements—music, nature, and cuisine—giving rise to this sketch, which features a cuatro, adorned with a pair of maracas, orchids, hibiscus flowers, arepas, and hallacas.
Al principio no sabía que hacer, el folklore abarca tanto que es difícil enfocarse en una sola cosa, así que por eso fué que se me ocurrió mezclar estos 3 elementos, la música, la naturaleza y la gastronomía, dando origen a este boceto, conformado por un cuatro, decorado por un par de maracas, orquídeas, flores de hibisco, arepas y hallacas.
***Use the color palette specific to each item: the cuatro was colored with the typical hues of wood, while the maracas were colored with the iconic colors of the Venezuelan flag—yellow, blue, and red—with white pixels on the blue stripe to simulate stars.

At the base, the round arepas, with those little lines left by the pan when they’re grilled, and the hallacas, wrapped in the typical green banana leaves.
I applied a base color to all of this and gradually added the details of shadows and highlights that make up the illustration.
Utilice la paleta de colores propios de cada uno, el cuatro fue coloreado con los colores típicos de la madera, a las maracas las coloree con los colores emblemáticos de la bandera venezolana, amarillo, azul y rojo, con pixeles blancos en la franja azul que simulan las estrellas.
Las orquídeas púrpuras y amarillas y los hibiscos rojos.
En la base, las arepas, redondas, con esas rayitas que se les hace por la marca del sartén al asarlas y las hallacas, con la típica envoltura verde de las hojas de plátano.
A todo esto se le aplicó una base de color y poco a poco le fui añadiendo los detalles de sombras y las luces que conforman la ilustración.
At first, I thought about making a background with yellow, blue, and red stripes, but in the end I decided on a gradient of brown tones.
Al principio pensé hacerle un fondo con franjas amarillas, azul y rojas, pero al final opté por una gradacion en tonos marrones.
