A few days ago I had the idea of drawing an alien to share it with the community, and to make it in a more cartoon and simple style, like the practices I have been sharing lately. In this style, after several days with a blank digital canvas I finally decided to draw. Today I will be using the Ibis Paint application to draw because it is comfortable for me and it is practically free and very intuitive. As you know I am doing my digital drawing practices in this application.
Hace unos días tenía la idea de dibujar un alien para compartirlo en la comunidad y que fuera en un estilo más cartoon y simple, como las prácticas que he estado compartiendo últimamente. En este estilo, después de varios días con lienzo digital en blanco me decidí a dibujar. Hoy estaré usando la aplicación Ibis Paint para dibujar porque me es cómodo y es una aplicación prácticamente gratuita y muy intuitiva. Como saben estoy haciendo las prácticas de dibujo digital en esta aplicación.
After drawing a lot, and erasing a lot, I decided to take one alien sketch all the way to a final drawing. It stood out from the other sketches mainly because of the pose that I liked very much and the small details. Among some ideas I had for my sketch were the following: the alien had to be drinking a beverage while floating in space, I chose this kind of martini with an olive. The other thing I wanted was a drawing that emulated the old Cartoon Network cartoons that I loved so much, that mix of Powerpuff Girls or Courage. For that the style would be flat with thick lines that clearly define the shapes, and of course it could not miss some grotesque elements typical of the cartoons of that era.
Después de dibujar mucho, y borrar mucho, me decanté por llevar hasta un dibujo final este alien, que sobresalió de los demás bocetos sobre todo por la pose que me gustó mucho y los pequeños detalles. Entre algunas ideas que tenía para hacer mi boceto estaban las siguientes: el alien tendría sí o sí que estar bebiendo una bebida mientras flota en el espacio, me decanté por esta especie de martini con aceituna. Lo otro que quería era un dibujo que emulara los antiguos dibujos animados de Cartoon Network que tanto me gustaban, esa mezcla de Chicas Superpoderosas o Courage. Para eso el estilo sería plano con líneas gruesas que delimiten bien las formas, además no se puede olvidar agregar algunos elementos grotescos típicos de las caricaturas de esa época.
With all that in mind I adjusted my brush to the thickness I needed, lowered the opacity of my sketch and once and for all began to draw, detail by detail, until I was happy with all the lines that would shape my drawing. I really liked how twisted the glass turned out with the stick and the olive, and also details of the alien such as its antenna, its belly button and that thoughtful pose. My alien is floating in space.
Con todo eso en mente ajusté mi pincel al grosor que necesitaba, bajé la opacidad de mi boceto y comencé de una vez y por todas a dibujar, detalle a detalle, hasta que estuve contento con todas las líneas que conformarían mi dibujo. Me gustó mucho lo torcida que quedó la copa con el palillo y la aceituna y también detalles del alien como su antena, su ombligo y esa pose pensativa. Mi alien está flotando en el espacio.
Now with all the lines ready it is time to remove the visibility of the sketch layer. Something very useful in Ibis Paint is that it also allows us to import traditional sketches and automatically extract the lines of the drawing, saving us a lot of time. Without a doubt this is a pro to keep in mind.
Ya con todas las líneas listas es momento de quitarle la visibilidad a la capa del boceto. Algo muy útil de Ibis Paint es que nos permite también importar bocetos en tradicional y automáticamente extrae las líneas del dibujo, ahorrándonos mucho tiempo. Algo que sin dudas es un pro a tener en cuenta.
I want my drawing to be very bright, almost psychedelic, that recalls the green of the alien to the green of absinthe, that famous drink for its color. In addition I will be using a purple color for the background that contrasts strongly with the green, and precisely placing the background of the drawing is the next step. I will not be very precise with the colors because in the end I will simply adjust them with a layer effect to enhance the brightness, therefore for now more opaque and almost dark colors are convenient.
Quiero que mi dibujo sea muy brillante, casi psicodélico, que recuerde el verde del alien al verde de la absenta, esa famosa bebida por su color. Además estaré usando un color morado para el fondo que contraste mucho con el verde, y es precisamente colocar el fondo del dibujo el siguiente paso. No estaré siendo muy preciso con los colores porque simplemente al final los ajustaré con un efecto de capa para realzar brillos, por lo tanto ahora me convienen colores más opacos y casi oscuros.
This was my first approach to the definitive colors of my drawing, with all the green already colored both in the alien and in the drink, and also with an exploration of the flat shadows of my drawing that give an idea of the general volume. I made the green of the drink very bright and saturated, I rarely use those colors so this drawing will allow me a bit of learning and exploration, which is what I always seek. I also colored its spots with a darker green.
Este fue mi primer acercamiento a los colores definitivos de mi dibujo, ya con todo el verde coloreado tanto en el alien como en la bebida, además con una exploración de las sombras planas de mi dibujo que le va dando una idea del volumen general. Hice el verde de la bebida muy brillante y saturado, rara vez utilizo esos colores así que me permitirá un poco de aprendizaje y exploración este dibujo que es lo que siempre busco. También colorié de un verde más oscuro sus manchas.
I added the volumes and final shadow details to the green skin of my alien using a very soft airbrush and with a layer of the same color in multiply mode. This allowed me to accentuate the roundness of the shapes and the volume of the alien’s body, keeping it flat but not too much. I finished by adding bright light details and highlights with the same brush I used for the outer lines, lowering the opacity to 90 percent and using white color. This makes the skin look smoother and shinier.
Agregué los volúmenes y detalles de sombras finales de la verde piel de mi alien utilizando un pincel de aerógrafo muy suave y con una capa con el mismo color en modo multiplicar. Esto me permitió acentuar la redondez de las formas y el volumen del cuerpo del alien, manteniéndolo plano pero no tanto. Terminé dando detalles de luces brillantes y highlights con el mismo pincel que utilicé para las líneas exteriores bajando la opacidad al 90 por ciento y utilizando color blanco. Esto hace que la piel se vea más lisa y brillosa.
As I explained I created an adjustment layer with the same drawing in luminosity mode. I will export this layer and reimport it as an image over my drawing but in Highlight mode. It will make the areas of greater light in my drawing have that characteristic brightness, almost mysterious and with airs of outer space. By placing that blending mode I already have my final result, which I complement as always by adding a bit of blur, and then sharpening the image. That makes any imperfection disappear when coloring. I also add a bit of noise because I really like how drawings look with that retro and analog touch.
Como explicaba creé una capa de ajuste con el mismo dibujo en modo luminosidad. Esta capa la exportaré y la volveré a importar como imagen sobre mi dibujo pero en modo Highlight. Hará que las zonas de mayor luz de mi dibujo tengan ese brillo característico, casi misterioso y con aires del espacio exterior. Al colocar ese modo de fusión ya tengo mi resultado final, que complemento como siempre agregando un poco de blur, y después marcando la nitidez de la imagen. Eso hace que desaparezca cualquier imperfección a la hora de colorear. También le agrego un poco de ruido porque me gusta mucho cómo se ven los dibujos con ese toque retro y análogo.
And so my drawing turned out, my alien drinking his space martini floating in space while thinking about the universe and the meaning of life. For the background I kept it simple so that our character would stand out. I hope you liked my drawing. Thank you for accompanying me one more day drawing.
Y así quedó mi dibujo, mi alien tomando su martini espacial flotando en el espacio mientras piensa en el universo y en el sentido de la vida. Para el fondo lo mantuve simple para que nuestro personaje destacara. Espero que les haya gustado mi dibujo. Gracias por acompañarme un día más dibujando.
