Today I simply sat down to draw. I felt like drawing the way I did as a child—just colored pencils and an idea in mind. I sat outside the house, on the ground, using a chair as an improvised table and laying out all my colors. I wanted to make a drawing that came purely from my imagination, but I couldn’t stop watching one of my kittens playing in a patch of grass, trying to climb a big rock. For a moment, I imagined the scene where the rock was a magical creature and my kitten was meeting it. I had to draw something related right away—and that’s exactly what I did.
Hoy simplemente me senté a dibujar. Tenía deseos de dibujar como cuando era niño: solo lápices de colores y una idea en mente. Me senté mirando al exterior de la casa, en el suelo, usando una silla como mesa improvisada y colocando todos mis colores. Quería hacer un dibujo que viniera solo de mi imaginación, pero no pude dejar de mirar a uno de mis gatitos jugando entre un montón de hierba mientras trataba de subirse en una gran roca. Por un segundo me imaginé la escena donde la gran roca era una criatura mágica y mi gatito se encontraba con ella. Tuve que, de inmediato, dibujar algo relacionado, y eso hice.
I’m using an old sketchbook I don’t really use anymore—many of its pages were damaged by watery materials. But I still like using it, partly to save supplies, which are a bit scarce, and partly because sometimes we draw more for the joy of drawing than for the final result. And incredibly, it’s often in those moments that we end up with something truly beautiful.
Estoy usando un viejo sketchbook que ya no uso y al que le dañé muchas páginas con materiales acuosos. Me gusta aún usarlo, para ahorrar materiales que están algo escasos y porque muchas veces queremos dibujar más por el placer de dibujar que por el resultado final. Es increíble: muchas de esas veces es cuando obtenemos resultados muy bonitos.
The idea behind the drawing was simply fantastic creatures in a fantastic forest. Inspired by my kitten, a small and curious creature searches through the tall grass. There, it finds a mound of earth covered in weeds, moss, and amanita mushrooms. When it looks more closely at the large hill, it realizes that a fierce creature—an ancient spirit—is resting, sleeping a peaceful, deep, and serene slumber. So deep, in fact, that life has had time to grow over it. There are so many questions after the drawing:
Will the great creature awaken from its sleep?
Will it remain asleep?
Will they become good friends?
Only the tall green grass and the starry night are witnesses to this encounter.
La idea del dibujo era simplemente criaturas fantásticas en un bosque fantástico. Inspirado en mi gatito, una pequeña y curiosa criatura busca entre la hierba alta. Ahí encuentra una montaña de tierra cubierta de hierbajo, musgos y hongos amanitas. Cuando se fija mejor en el gran montículo de tierra, se da cuenta de que una feroz criatura—un espíritu antiguo—descansa, duerme un apacible sueño, profundo y sereno. Tan profundo que ha dado tiempo a la vida crecer sobre él. Hay tantas preguntas después del dibujo:
¿La gran criatura despertará de su sueño?
¿Permanecerá dormida?
¿Se harán buenos amigos?
De este encuentro solo son testigos el verde pasto alto y la estrellada noche.
I really enjoyed this drawing, and I loved going back to using colored pencils in the most creative way possible—drawing from imagination, imagining new worlds and creatures, and especially their relationships. It’s something I wish I had more time to explore and create: to draw without restrictions, simply for the joy of drawing and enjoying it. I hope you like this little drawing. See you in the next one?

Disfruté mucho este dibujo, y disfruté volver a usar lápices de colores en la forma más creativa posible: dibujar desde la imaginación, imaginando mundos y criaturas nuevas, y más aún sus relaciones.
