The Blue Tape Lost It’s Stick 2026 Oil on paper 18 x 24"
Thinking of my limited studio space now and in the future, I am nearly certain that I will never stretch canvas again unless I can find a larger work and storage space. It will have to be paper and loose canvas for the remainder of my career/no career. Both stack neatly into boxes and boxes stack upon boxes. I am numbering these because the paper and medium is uniform and I have a box that will fit a hundred nice and snug. I also like the concept of painting as journaling. I can label the box:
Paintings and Their Titles April 6 - May 10, 2026. Oil on paper, 18 x 24"
I just need to remember to write the titles on the back. The journaling aspect comes from the sometimes stream-of-consciousness during the painting process. 75% of the time, the painting has nothing to do with the title and vice-versa. But then neither does the title “Untitled” point to what the viewer sees. At least with me she’ll know what I was temporarily feeling or opinionating while making the picture. Not many artists leave that kind of diary to posterity. I’ve always thought it to be a waste of real estate to refuse the painting a title. We’re social animals. I don’t want you to see or feel with my painting whatever you see or feel. You can do that when you’re alone with it. Make your own painting and flashy title if you want to tell me something. I want to communicate my thoughts to you. My visions, dreams, joys and rages. I’ve always been in this game for expression. If I could make the painting jump with pom-poms, I would. There are no rules to art. Likewise, for me, if it’s obviously a dog (never too sure with my skill at rendering), why title it “dog”? Does a dog call itself dog? Wouldn’t a more interesting title be, “Obviously it’s a Dog, But Try to Tell It That”. I think so.
Oh well. Here are some more from earlier in the week. I’ll post the rest up to date tomorrow.
