The other day I posted a thread about one of my aunts. This post is an expanded version of what I said there.
My mother has multiple sisters, and I could go on with stories about each of them. Of the aunts I have a close relationship with, auntie S. is one of my mother's older siblings, she's a doctor though it's been years since she worked in the medical fields. I was really close with Auntie S. as a child, she taught me English (just letters and a few words) when I was around 10 years old, it was a reward for doing well at school.
I don't ask about people's lives, even the ones I'm close with. So it took me a long time to know this fact about my aunt: She is a cancer survivor. It happened before I was born, and by the time I was aware of life, there were no traces of her ever been a cancer patient.
Her affliction was discovered in the early stages, and my grandfather quickly sent her to the best doctors he could in Germany (in the 80s) so she had the best case scenario for a cancer patient. Even then, the family including herself thought she was going to die. Overcoming cancer was something unheard of at the time. Her case was miraculous.
According to my mother, my aunt's faith was admirable, she took her illness with grace and was less worried about death than her parents and siblings. She told the doctors to not hide anything from her about her condition, she was a doctor too. She even exchanged knowledge with the doctors in Germany. I'm pretty sure she used English, though.
With time, her condition got better... Doctors didn't believe it at first, but in the end declared her completely healthy.
I heard some parts of the story from my mom more than once, "when your aunt S. was in Germany" and "your grandfather did everything for us" but I didn't know (or maybe overlooked) that she was in Germany for Cancer!
My aunt S. retired early from her medical career. It's been years since she was last up to date with medical development. Nowadays she studies and teaches Qur'an. She already mastered at least two Qira'at (recitations) and is knowledgeable about all ten. She taught me how to recite Qur'an properly too, though I learned from actual sheikhs more than from her. I like my aunt!
Just thought I'd write about her. Thanks for reading!
