During the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Imane Khelif, a boxer from Algeria, has unfortunately suffered unfair treatment due to her physical condition.
Despite meeting all the eligibility criteria set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Khelif has faced unwarranted scrutiny and prejudice solely because of her appearance.
To clarify, it is important to note that she is not a transgender woman, as some reports have incorrectly stated.
She was born a woman and has a medical condition known as hyperandrogenism, which causes excessive testosterone production. (It is worth noting that the LGBT movement is banned in Algeria and can result in imprisonment).
Imane Khelif's victory over the Italian provoked overreactions. However, her previous defeats in women's tournaments, including losses to Natalia Shadrina, Kellie Harrington and Amy Broadhurst, highlight that her status does not give her superiority over any woman.
