Bangladesh is a riverine country in South Asia. About 600 rivers, including tributaries, have flowed through the country, occupying a vast area of 24,140 km. Most parts of Bangladesh are covered with silt that flows through hundreds of rivers. Among the numerous rivers in riverine Bangladesh, many are huge in size and importance. These rivers are referred to as big rivers. Some of the rivers that can be mentioned as big rivers are: Padma, Meghna, Jamuna, Brahmaputra, Karnafuli, Shitalakshya, Gomti etc.
Navigable rivers play an important role in trade and commerce. The city plays an influential role in development. Almost all the major cities, towns and commercial centers of Bangladesh are built on the banks of different rivers; For example, Dhaka metropolis on the banks of the river Buriganga, Narayanganj city and port on the banks of the river Shitalakshya, Chittagong on the banks of the river Karnafuli, Mymensingh on the banks of the old river Brahmaputra. Hydroelectricity can be generated from rivers with adequate flow, velocity and slope. Hydropower is being generated by building a dam on the river Karnafuli at a place called Kaptai. It is the only hydropower plant in Bangladesh.
The total length of rivers in Bangladesh is about 24,140 km. Bangladesh's vast river system is made up of small hilly rhymes, crooked seasonal creeks, muddy canals, picturesque rivers and their tributaries and tributaries. In some places, such as Patuakhali, Barisal and the Sundarbans, rivers are so abundant that rivers have actually formed in those areas. The rivers of Bangladesh are not naturally evenly distributed throughout the country. The number and size of rivers in the north-western part of the country gradually increased in the south-eastern part of the country.
From the point of view of river system, rivers of Bangladesh can be divided into four main river systems or river systems: 1) Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system 2) Ganga-Padma river system 3) Surma-Meghna river system and 4) Rivers of Chittagong region. The bangladeshi Brahmaputra River ranks 22nd in the world (2,650 km) and the Ganges River ranks 30th (2,510 km) in length.
